Can any of the present actresses reach the kind of popularity that Madhuri and Sridevi did in the 1980's?
The Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit combo dominated the industry for around 2 decades which is a phenomenal achievement in itself. While Sridevi's peak period was during the second half of 80s, Madhuri touched the pinnacle of success in the first half of 90s. Even the likes of Sunny Deol and Rajinikanth played supporting roles in 1989 blockbuster Chaalbaaz' which rode on Sridevi's magnetic charisma alone. Such was the phenomenal stardom of Madhuri Dixit that all the leading distributors renamed the 1995 blockbuster Raja' to Rani', as the movie was heavily panned by critics but still became a huge success due to Madhuri's starpower. Both of them individually starred in some of the classic movies of Indian Cinema like Mr. India', Chandni', Hum Aapke Hain Kaun' and Saajan' to name a few.

The reign of female actors is limited and the shelf life is decreasing as the years are passing by. While a Sridevi or a Madhuri was easily the topmost heroine for more than 10 years, it's slowly getting harder to maintain the top position for even 5 years these days. The story is entirely different as far as the male department goes where Salman, Aamir, Shahrukh, who were the top actors during Sridevi-Madhuri era, are still ruling the roost.

They both are killer combo of beauty, grace, dance and acting. Hard to find all these in any current actress.

There were guys dying for Madhuri's one smile. I doubt anyone would enjoy such popularity ever.

I don't think this is even a legit question to ask. No one can touch Madhuri whether it be in terms of acting, star power, grace, elegance, dance, smile, simplicity, charm, expressions, etc. People can call her overrated if they want, but truth is that she's created such a huge impact on the industry. No one after her has yet created that same impact.

After Madhuri no female from bollywood touched the same height and can never do. Times changed the industry changed now there is no actress that is not replacable. One actress walks out another fills in in no time. No leading top hero will play 2nd fiddle to any actress not even the young stars but in madhuri and sridevi movies even Khans, anil and sunny the top actors of 90s played 2nd fiddle.

Yes, Madhuri and Sridevi used to rule the roost back in 80s, they dominated in their movies and had higher pay and higher billing than their heros.

But now its even better! Deepika, Kangana, Vidya, Priyanka, Anushka are doing main protagonists roles, where there is almost no male lead (Queen, Kahaani) or the male lead is unknown and not popular (NH10, Mary Kom)

I think times are changing for the better as such solo projects of heroines are getting tremendous BO success (Queen, Kahani) and HIGH critical acclaim as well. These girls are doing VERY GOOD! 👏

Power of female stars is on the wane now.

Sridevi and MD have been paid more than their male co stars. Whereas today even a top star like DPad or Kat don't get paid more. Instead these Ranveers and Imrans get bigger paycheck!

That time has gone when heroine's presence was equally important in making a film bankable. When she was paid according to her bankability. When films were written around her (Seeta Aur Geeta, Chaalbaaz etc). When even leading male stars would play sidekick to heroine.

Even in art films, actresses no longer wield the clout that Shabana and Smita used to have.

Success of ikka dukka film like Queen or Kahaani now doesn't indicate women have power or arw taken seriously.

These days either one has beauty but no talent or talent but no beauty/attractive appeal. No complete package. They blame producers or co stars for poor box office record but forget that in past heroines had given hits with even new boys like Anil, Sunny, Bobby etc. How did those actresses manage it?

Sorry but in past even a dancing girl like Helen had clout, she was respected, no film was complete without her, her song alone made films hit (for eg, Inkaar). We don't have anything of this sort now.

Some like Devika Rani even brought in new talent like Dilip Kumar. Does any other actress have such contribution in cinema now?

It is sad that industry no longer gives importance to women. It is regressing. It is not always lack of talent but also industry's own closed, old boys club mentality of functioning that has diminished status of women.

Even singers no longer wield clout that Mangeshkar sisters used to!
