The need to look for someone that is flawless; unlike us. We are such 'sinners', that we feel the need to 'worship' others; who we believe are better than us.

It takes on a form of obsession where even when we found out their faults; we cannot accept that they are different from the image we made of them in our mind.

Then, when we get in company of 'like minded' people ( read 'fans'), we lose our reasoning abilities and adopt a 'mob' like mentality.

Quie similar to how people watching a gang rape; they just go with the 'crowd' and lose all their humanity.

Their moms didn't smack them enough when they misbehaved as kids.

Jokes apart, I think obsessive fans probably do not have a healthy social structure around them. They didn't learn separation of reality and fantasy. They didn't learn healthy expression of emotions.

Crazy people but then why just actors, people have same mentality regarding sports people, politicians, singers etc and it just goes round and round.

Some might criticize actors fans but then they might themselves be doing it for politicians or sports people or the other way round.

Political supporters are worse , some of them don't hesitate to abuse, vandalise or even kill for it .

These exist in west too. Otherwise how can people call themselves CUMBERBITCHES or Cumbercookies to show love for benedict cumberbatch. His fanbase is surely very aggressive and make few fanbases look like saints.

There are Beliebers, Swifties, directioners who caused world wide flood as zayn malik left one direction. There is different armies too who take over twitter to show their power. And there is jodi shippers like IF tv forums,most dominant one leonardo de caprio kate winslet shippers till date. 😆

Suicide or depression for an actor to me defines mental illness. Even stalkers, I feel are like someone with psychotic vibes the overly obsessive/possessive types.

Some example can be seen on IF/youtube/twitter/Instagram too, degrading members, worshipping actors, never believing that even celebrities can be wrong, etc

Personally I feel such people have the same issue in real life too, they are just too obsessed with things that they don't have. Its a fantasy for them, where that one celeb can do no wrong, is the most beautiful person ever, yada yada.

I used to be crazy or may be even obsessive fan of an on screen couple in my teenage years, but then I grew up. Thank God! Whenever I see any of my old Posts related to it, I feel so embarrassing lol. But I didn't use to abuse as typical obsessed fans. May be I have bashed few times if someone instigated me or attacked me first since I only bash back if someone starts first. Still I can't believe I was so crazy over it.

But the most weird and even creepy for me is seeing married women in their 30s and 40s obsessed over tv male leads mostly because of their looks, their bodies, and etc. It's so weird.

I think most people look to cinema as a means of escape and they get swayed into the character and what's portrayed. BW in general portrays everything larger than life and hence people get obsessed. I never ever heard of religious shrines being built for ready celebs till I came here and saw the craze people (men and women) feel for Rajnikant or Big B.

It's not herd mentality or a mental illness. It's in my opinion those people that live ordinary or on the downsize of advantage seeing these people on screen doing extraordinary/fascinating things and it illuminates their minds. They become devoted to a man who onscreen can fight for justice, beat up 50 men at once, and still get the beautiful heroine at the end.
