2014..alia and kangana

This is hard to answer, because this is ever-changing. If one of them improved acting wise, then another had a superb line up of films in terms of commercial success, plus the roles were different too. Some roles had more impact and the commercial success seemed to pale in comparison to the role.

2014 (first half) - Kangana/ (after Highway, 2 states) Alia
2013 - Deepika
2012 - Vidya / (second half) PC (post Barfi release*)
2011 (first half) - Anushka (post BBB release)
2010 - Katrina
2009 - Kareena/PC
2008 - Kareena/PC

Just my opinion mostly based on the commercial success and with some critical acclaim. Plus the praise/criticism for them (new fans that emerged) etc etc.

* - I wasn't sure of this, but from what I recall the movie received a lot of attention pre/post-controversy.

Till 2012,it was only Kareena without any doubt..Rest were getting success here and there but Kareena was at whole another level.
2013 and 2014-Deepika easily...Kangana and Alia were there too but Deepika is Queen.
