i danced on ek do teen, monica i love you etc when i was young. I never felt that it was sexualized because for little girls it is just dancing. It's the perspective, not item songs.

A 6 year may not realize the full meaning of a Sheila Ki Jawanj song. But if she starts singing it at 6 by the time she's 12 and knows more she has become completely desensitized to it. That wouldn't be a problem if we lived in an ideal society. But we don't. And then there is the issue of dance moves. A 6 year old might not think anything vulgar of gyrating her hips every which way and shaking her non-existent breasts up and down. But the danger is that she's learning that these dances are OK and all girls should dance this way. Not only that but the 6 year old little boy who is there probably thinks that's how girls should dance too and that it's ok for him to ogle her hips or chest.

In my opinion children need boundaries and limits. They need standard and guidelines of right and wrong. If a child innocently hears or watches an item song and decides to emulate it should he or she be punished? Absolutely not. How parents should react? I don't know. I understand RH's concern that it might just increase their curiosity and make them try it more and more. But I don't know if ignoring it or laughing it off is the right approach either.

Like I said in my first post, I don't know what the right solution is. I don't know if there is one general rule all parents can follow. And all of my comments above are my opinion. I'm not claiming it as absolute right or wrong.

Item songs have been there for ages.. that didnt corrupt Shaban's childhood. And today's kids have more option tha just item songs, the options r much more vulgur.
Not a fan of items songs, its always FF for me.. but first they r blamed for all the wrong reasons in India. U know whats more disturbing.. its in 90s when as a kid, I have seen scenes where few goons RAPE a girl in front of 1000s of ppl watching it as a tamasha. That's f**king disturbing.

Instead of blaming item songs, why don't they teach men to control themselves, teach them morals & values. If they have a problem with item songs, they must have problems with steamy scenes, short clothes, double meaning dialogues & what not in Bollywood films. This is how it is, you cannot ban something if the mindset of the nation has not changed. Hollywood has not let any politics or scandals come in the way of their film and their government has not banned it...for example THE INTERVIEW.

FINALLY someone has spoken up and that too from the fraternity.
The children dancing to these songs in reality shows and parties are not as innocent as they used to be. They have been exposed a lot more to visual media than we have; they want to emulate what they see more than innocent kids of yesterday years.

We watch this because it is cheap entertainment at the expense of the children. We are not thinking about what impressions this leaves on the children.

Parents and reality shows are lazy; they do not want to work hard or pay more to find adults who will provide entertainment at weddings or reality shows.

Am glad someone finally spoke up!!

Maybe Parents should have a Parental Control over what children are viewing. Stop blaming films.

I dont think it leads to sexualiztion of children, but I do agree there should be some self check by film makers as far as lyrics of the songs are concerned. I remember during 2012 when Nirbhaya rape case was the burning topic on news channels, on music channels we had Kareena Kapoor dancing away to lyrics like "main to tandoori murgi hoon yaar, gatak le saiyaa alcohaal se" (I am not singalling out the actress or the movie, only giving an example). It was disturbing on so many levels. Can women be objectified and insulted to any level in garb of item number? And what is worse that such songs make a place somewhere on psyche of impressionable youth esp. rural ones who idolize movie stars. I am not advocating a ban on item songs. Item songs have to be fun and sexy and that is fine. I have no problem with Sheila or Munni or Baby doll, but songs which downrightly abuse women should be discouraged. Especially because there is no censorship on them. While movies are categorized as per their content and accessed in movie theatres, songs have universal access through TV. Anyone belonging to any agegroup can watch them anytime and its very difficult to monitor TV viewing. So its perhaps the responsibilty of filmakers and actors to make sure that the songs they are making /dancing away to, are not completely derogatory to women instead of merely talking about women dignity and respect in interviews.

Parents should not stop imho
Kids don't even know what the lyrics mean but kids are rebellious..mostly being drawn to those they are refrained from doing so..so stopping them over and over again would only make them more interested in that

I do feel filmmakers should take a certain responsibility.

I feel fevicol se was one of the worst..very degrading and demeaning especially for women
