Dear Stardust Award Organisers, Were You High While Drafting Award Winners List?

By Nashmina Lakhani, Team iDiva | posted Jan 12th 2015 at 4:27PM

It was the first award show of the new year and millions of eyes were glued to the screen to check out who would take home the prestigious awards this time. Apart from watching the who's who of Bollywood, the show promised us some best performances by the A-listers. I was quite looking forward to see my favourites, Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Deepika Padukone and Kareena Kapoor shaking a leg and so my Sunday night date was fixed with Colors.

My excitement, however, waned soon. The show, unfortunately this year, turned out to be a lukewarm effort at best, with some unappealing performances, a baffling list of winners that had us all gaping in indignation and worst of all, Tiger Shroff!

The show started with host Karan Johar and Riteish Deshmukh sharing some silly one-liner. After Parineeti's not so appealing performance, the first set of awards announced- The Music Awards. With A.R Rahman's compositions in Highway and Amit Trivedi's Music for Queen in the nomination list, I thought one of them would definitely take home the award. Instead, the winner turned out to be the movie Yaariyan, where 5 Music directors composed different songs for the movie. Was the magazine trying to be in the good books of all those 5 Music directors? However, the icing on this disastrous cake was when Yo Yo Honey Singh was given the award for Best playback singer male in competition against the singers like Arijit Singh (who was nominated for three songs), Mika Singh and Ankit Tiwari. Huh? Surely not!

I next sat through a myriad of awards given to the actresses. Kangna Ranaut won Searchlight award for Best Actress for Queen, while Rani Mukherjee nabbed the Best Thriller/Action Actress award forMardaani. Actress Priyanka Chopra bagged the Best Drama Actress award for her performance inMary Kom, but it was Deepika Padukone who won Star of the Year (Female) award for Happy New Year. But I was baffled when Sonam Kapoor was awarded Achievers Award for best actress in a rom-com film. It was rapidly starting to seem like a diplomatic walk-through by Bollywood magazine to ensure that even the next time the leading ladies of Bollywood continue to attend the award function. With award functions happening every month, one cannot exactly blame them.

Everybody must have gasped from the confines of their living room when Tiger Shroff took home the award for Superstar of Tomorrow. How? After watching the movie, Heropanti- like seriously? Varun Dhawan took home the award for best actor in a rom-com film for Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. Did anyone even see that movie?

Well if that's not enough damage, Happy New Year swept all popular awards that included Best Actor Best Actress, Best film, and Dream Director. The popular list did not even include movies likeHighway and Mardaani. Why?

But the real disappointment was when Sonu Sood took home the award for the best negative role for the movie, Entertainment. Last year, we saw some fantastic actors giving their best shot in villainous roles. Whether it be Nawazuddin Siddiqui for Kick or Kay Kay Menon for Haider, these actors made the villain look much more powerful than the lead actor. Instead the award goes to a joke of a villain whose primary task in the movie is to wrestle property from a dog! Ah! Kill me!

My Sunday night now ruined beyond repair, I sat back bewildered wondering what kind of an award show it was. I just hope that upcoming award functions this year do much more justice to the films and their actors.
