Spreading his wings

Barun Sobti
Mumbai | Posted: December 5, 2014 1:00 am

By Karan Shah

Launch vehicle

In Delhi, I started my modelling career doing print ads. Later, when I came to Mumbai, I continued modelling for print ads, before getting a break on television in a show titled Shraddha. After that I did a few TV serials such as Dill Mill Gayye, Baat Hamari Pakki Hai and Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?

Casting coup

The casting team contacted me and asked me to audition for the role in Main Aur Mr. Riight. After reading the script, I was asked to enact a few scenes for the screen test. After doing three scenes, the director liked my work and signed me.

Stepping stone

After completing my graduation through distant learning in Delhi, I started working in a call-center for a year. After a sabbatical of six months, I took up another job in a company, but it was just a routine process of making money to survive; there was nothing exciting happening in my life. At the age of 25, an exciting opportunity to participate in a TV show came knocking on my door, and I immediately grabbed it. That changed my entire life and I was introduced to the world of acting.

First Shot

In real life, I am a little shy and an introvert, so even if I have to do an aggressive shot, it looks a little subtle. So, in Main..., I had to invest all my energy doing this over-the-top role. For the first scene, I had to leap on a couch, while Shenaz (Treasurywala) was telling me something. I put all my energy in the scene, but then the director, Adeeb (Rais) told me that we would need a lot more energy than what I had invested in the scene.

The takeaway

The most important lesson that I learnt was that you can achieve a lot in 24 hours if you manage your time in a proper manner. I was simultaneously shooting for one of my serial as well as the movie. So balancing two assignments and managing my time in the correct manner, was what I learnt while working in this film. Looking back at it now, I have done a commendable job.

Stumbling block

Balancing the shooting schedules of the film and serial was really tough. I faced a few health issues and on certain occasions I had to go without sleep as well. My role too was physically very demanding, but despite lack of sleep and my diet going for a toss, I managed to overcome the hurdles that came my way. But all that is in the past now, and we are ready to release the film.

Role model
I don't believe in role models. I am happy being myself.

Future projects

Early next year we will release Satra Ko Shaadi Hai in which I play the lead. Then there is 22 Yards which will also release in 2015.

A journey of finding the Mr. Right

On a blissful day of December, the cast of Main Aur Mr. Riight- BarunSobti, ShenazTreasurywala, AdeebRais (director) and PoojaGujral (producer) came down to the beautiful cafe Ambrosia Bliss, Connaught Place, New Delhi to promote their movie. The story revolves around a simple situation that everyone tackles in their life that is- finding the right match.

A journey of finding the Mr. Right

However, it's unlikely to get exactly what we want, isn't it? But Aliya Raj (the character played by ShenazTreasurywala) a perfectionist and a career-oriented woman, who aims at getting everything that's best wants to get love in her life for which she has a huge list that every guy must match up to.

However, when she meets Sukhi Singh (character played by BarunSobti), she finds him attractive and starts a journey along with him to make him perfect for her. So, the story revolves around their journey of making Barun a perfect man from a clumsy one. Would she be successful? Well, that you would have to find out on 12th December in your nearby cinema theatres.

A journey of finding the Mr. Right

Talking on the occasion, AdeebRais- (director of the movie) said, "The movie is quite relatable for youngsters because it talks about the phase we all have experienced once in our life. I myself had gone through this phase and drew the picture of a perfect girlfriend that I would have wanted to have back then. So, I thought of making a movie on this topic to spread a message that inner beauty is all that matters. Shehnaz and Barun have done an excellent job and I am fortunate to have them in this movie."

Barun, who is known for his role in IssPyarKoKyaNaam Dun would be seen playing a crazy role in this movie, talking about which he said, "Even in real life I am introvert, and because of that I relate very much to my character in the serial I did. However, when I was approached for this role I was excited to do it because the character of Sukhi is quite interesting and you would know much about it when you watch the movie. I hope all my fans love my work in the movie as well."

A journey of finding the Mr. Right

"I am playing the role of a woman who lost her parents in quite a young age and has earned everything in her life on her own with loads of dedication and hard work. That's the reason she has an attitude for herself and aims at just having the best. However, when she meets Sukhi she discovers something unknown about herself. So, it's not a journey for him only, but for her too."

The music has been given by BappiLahiri and the songs has one of the most famous numbers- PyarBina Chain Kahaan Re. The movie is all set to release this coming Friday- December 12th 2014. Exclusive- Barun Sobti talks about his films, Salman, John, Television

December 8, 2014 0

Main Aur Mr Riight actor Barun Sobti in an exclusive interview with us spoke about the film, Salman Khan, John Abraham, his plans to venture back into television and lots more. Have a look-

1. The trailer of the film looks very interesting but again it looks similar to many romantic comedies which have come out from Bollywood. So what is one thing which makes Main Aur Mr Riight different from all other romantic comedies?

Barun- My friends who have seen the promo have said the same thing i.e. it is a romantic comedy which we all have seen but it looks to be a fun ride. A romantic comedy has to revolve around love but what can be different are the comic scenes. So fresh approach to the film and the fact that director is just 24 years old makes the film different.

2. You play a Salman Khan fan in the film, so how much do you admire him in your real life?

Barun- You get to read about Salman Khan a lot in the news papers and whatever I have read apart from the mistakes happened, things which might have happened with him happens with all of us as we are all humans. I really admire him for the fact that he is very helpful to other people and the fact that he has taken the act of helping people to another level. I really admire people like him and I want to be like him. I love doing things for people and for that sense I will be very happy if I get to reach the position he is at now.

3. This is a romantic comedy, so which kind of films would love like to do in the future?

Barun- Yaar I love doing intense role. There is a film I am working on that is 22 yards and that is a very intense film. Such roles give you a lot of scope to perform without going wrong. Comedy is one of the most difficult genre as it is very difficult to make people laugh. In intense roles, it is okay if people don't cry with you but you feel bad if people don't laugh on your jokes. Personally I love doing intense roles.

4. Would you like to venture back into television?

Barun- I am not going to do any daily soaps. I will change my profession and will sell milk but I wont do any daily soaps. The reason is you can't have new ideas everyday and there are enormous working hours. You become rain dead and there is no time for family. I think daily show is a strong no right now. It limits ones scope of acting.

5. Would you like to host a reality show?

Barun- I would like to do a weekly show something on the lines of Anil Kapoor's 24 and I will still like to wait for that as Indian audience is still new to such kind of shows.

6. How different is it working in a film and on television?

Barun- Well it is very different. The producers while doing a television show give a stipulated budget beyond which the director cannot go and same is not the scenario with films. A directors vision on television is restricted so we can't judge their talent. Everyone is different and has a different style of working. Films to have their own budget but that is fixed taking into consideration how much they are expecting the film to earn.

7. Bollywood directors like Ashutosh Gowariker and Sanjay Leela Bhansali are venturing into direction on television so would you like to work with them if give a chance to?

Barun - With all due respect, I don't have anything against the daily shows but I don't have the capacity to work in a daily show any more. Even if I do a daily show now forcefully, I will look for other options after a year. I have gone through a phase when I wanted not to do a daily show as I was too bored doing it.

8. What are your expectations from the film?

Barun- I don't want to reach out to everyone but whomever I reach out to I want him to remember me.

9. Could you tell us about your next film with John Abraham Productions?

Barun- The film is in post production stage and it is in the final stages of the edit. We are preparing the final cut. I have seen some rushes and it is looking fantastic. The DOP has done a very good job, he is a national award winner. The writer and director too have done a very good job and actors are in a very good space in this film. The film looks good and it is a situational comedy. It is a ensemble film of 52 people. The film should be out in early next year.

10. How was it interacting with John Abraham?

Barun- John is not a kind of person who will give you tips. He is a very cool guy and he is more interested about serious topics or he is interested in jokes. He is a very nice guy and I have shot with him for one night and he is a nice guy.

11. Many actors in Bollywood believe in rewards than the awards and you yourself have won many awards for television, so what is your take on that?

Barun- I think the awards are very unfair. You can't just choose one best guy as it is impossible. Awards can't be based on objectivity but they have to be subjective. I wish there was a better way but we don't have any other option.

No one is edgier than Saif in Bollywood'

Dec 07, 2014 - Nivi Shrivastava

Still from Main Aur Mr. Riight

Adeeb Rais, director of Main Aur Mr. Riight, says his biggest inspiration is Yash Chopra, who he wished he could have met. Adeeb is positive about his first feature film and hopes to work with Saif Ali Khan someday

He decided to be a filmmaker at 13 and by 21 he was ready with his first Bollywood movie Kuch Spice To Make It Meetha. After a hiatus of two years, one of the youngest directors in Bollywood, Adeeb Rais, is now ready with his next commercial venture Main Aur Mr. Riight starring Shenaz Treasurywala and Barun Sobti.

Adeeb, who was recently in the capital with the starcast of the movie, talks about his love for movies, travel and food.

Adeeb's career in films started with India's first e-release film Kuch Spice To Make It Meetha starring Purab Kohli and Nauheed Cyrusi, and seeing the positive response after the release of the movie, he decided to direct Main Aur Mr. Riight. Talking about his journey so far, he says, "I started from directing plays in school and college, and then went on to direct short films. I completed my formal education in Business of Film Television from Whistling Woods International. I worked on lot of low budget ad films and corporate films and then decided to direct Kuch Spice To Make It Meetha. It was a huge success online and then I got an offer to direct my first full-fledged feature film Main Aur Mr. Riight."

Speaking about the film, Adeeb says, "Main Aur Mr. Riight is a simple, sweet and fun film. I never set up to make a path-breaking film, I wanted make a film that would make people smile and I think I've achieved that with this movie. As a director, every film is challenging for me. This being my first film, I first had to win the trust of my entire team. I was directing a low budget film with minimum resources so it was a task for me to make it look like an upmarket movie."

As the crew of the film was young, Adeeb mentions that everyone understood each other well. He adds, "The tone of this film is very young and peppy. We were shooting at odd hours and it was very hectic, but the team was always buzzing with energy and enthusiasm. No one ever complained about the lack of resources and everyone was eager to help each other to get the film through."

Adeeb feels that the Internet is a huge medium for modern day filmmakers, and caters to the youth and old audiences alike. Referring to his first venture, he mentions, "I am very proud of Kuch Spice..., a lot of young filmmakers ask me how I pulled it off, and I feel so happy that a unique initiative like that got noticed. I feel there is so much that can be done using the online medium, and as filmmakers we should open our minds and try and use this more effectively."

Adeeb's biggest inspiration as a director is Yash Chopra, and he mentions that the way he used to create a surreal world in his films, will inspire him for life. He says, "Yashji's movies had the right balance. I wish I could have met him at least once in my life. Among the present day directors, I like the works of Vikramaditya Motwane, Imtiaz Ali, Abbas Mustan, Zoya Akthar and Karan Johar. As for actors, we have a talented crop of them and someday I would want to work with Saif Ali Khan. He has been an inspiration in my growing up years and I don't think there's anyone as edgy as him in our industry." As for his future plans, Adeeb hints someday he may try his hand at acting too, but for now he is hopeful about his movie's box office success.

"My two biggest passions are food and travel. If not a filmmaker I would love being a travel show host or food critique. As for acting, I will take the plunge at some point but I don't think I am ready right now. Acting will not be a priority, but I will give it a try for the fun and experience of it," he concludes.
