Brampton goes gaga for Bollywood superstar Salman Khan

BRAMPTON"He arrived, wowed his fans and conquered their hearts.

Several hundred people broke into an ear-deafening cheer as Bollywood superstar Salman Khan hopped on to the stage at SilverCity Brampton Saturday (Aug. 30) for the music launch of comedy movie Dr. Cabbie.

Dressed in a blue long-sleeved shirt and black pants, Khan serenaded his fans with songs from his blockbuster hits - Bodyguard and Kick - and danced to the music's beats.

"I watched the film (Dr. Cabbie) last night and it's an out-and out comedy," Khan told the large crowd that had been waiting in Saturday's sweltering heat. "Vinay Virmani (the lead actor) is great actor. He should come to Mumbai. I urge you all to watch the movie."

"I am here in Toronto after eight years," he continued. "Someday, god willing, I will come back and perform for you all."

As fans go, there were plenty of die-hard ones that showed up for the concert. Some wore t-shirts that bore the name of Khan's charity, Being Human. Others carried posters and photographs of their heartthrob.

"Meeting Salman Khan was on my bucket-list," said Brampton resident Sangita Patel. "I have watched Salman's Maine Pyar Kiya at least 25 times. I haven't been able to sleep at all, knowing he's going to be in Brampton and that I am about to see him. "

Sisters Meera and Bhoomika Puvi and their friend Prashanthy Uthayakumar said they had to set off from Scarborough early order to make it to the venue and stake out a place near the main stage.

News of Khan's presence in Toronto managed to create quite a stir among his fans in the GTA.

Other Bollywood celebrities are expected to arrive in Toronto for the Toronto International Film Festival, which runs Sept. 4-14.

Producers of Dr. Cabbie reportedly elected not to attempt to have their film included in TIFF because they did not want to jostle for attention with other Bollywood films at the festival.

Dr. Cabbie's cast includes Mississauga resident Vinay Virmani, Kunal Nayyar (who plays Rajesh Kootrapalli in TV sitcom Big Bang Theory) and Isabelle Kaif, sister of a leading Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif.

Brampton's Manj Musik and Raghav, a well-known artist from U.K. kept the crowd on its feet. Manj and his wife Nindy Kaur performed half-a-dozen songs that combined the sensibilities of bhangra with hip-hop and reggae.

Khan was undoubtedly the star attraction at the music launch, but the crowd was equally enthusiastic towards Lily Singh (who sometimes goes by the name "Superwoman"). Singh, a YouTube sensation plays a small role in Dr. Cabbie.

Dr. Cabbie's follows the story of an Indian doctor who, after immigrating to Canada is forced to become a cab driver because his foreign credentials are not recognized here. Still wanting to be involved in medicine, he converts his cab into a mobile clinic.

Montreal's Jean-Franois Pouliot directed the movie.

Khan also did not disappoint Mississauga resident Hadi Hasnat.

Hasnat, who has cerebral palsy, told The Guardian a few days earlier that he is a fan of Khan and hoped to meet his idol.

Khan walked up to Hasnat, hugged him and then wheeled him from one end of the field - where the stage had been set-up - to the other.
