I said I was going to leave, but I couldn't do it. There's a big film coming this week and I had the "itch" to write my predictions for this film.
Kuch zyada ho gaya tha in my last post 😆 Got too senti, I don't know why. But I feel there is no need to quit something that I enjoy doing, so here I am back again. Thanks everyone who supported me and wanted me back, as that was another reason why I've decided to come back.
Opening day prediction of KICK going wrong gave me a kick from behind, but I'm happy that I was able to acknowledge the fact that Mr. Afg got his prediction correct. Outstanding prediction buddy 👏
Anyways, here's my box office predictions for ENTERTAINMENT:
This Friday sees the release of Akshay Kumar's film ENTERTAINMENT. Akshay Kumar is back, coming off the red hot success of HOLIDAY which (according to BOI) was the highest grossing film of the year. Of course, that changed when KICK came, but there's no denying that HOLIDAY was very well appreciated by the public.
ENTERTAINMENT marks the first time in a long time that Akshay Kumar is back in what seems to be a full comedy film. His last film in this space may have been HOUSEFULL 2, as his films after that were mostly desi masala films that had focus on action scenes. ENTERTAINMENT does seem to have some action too, but probably in a more limited dose (similar to HOUSEFULL 2).
There was a time when many felt Akshay was doing too many comedy films, and eventually those films started under-performing. KAMBAKHT ISHQ, DE DANA DAN, TEES MAAR KHAN, THANK YOU, etc were just some of Akshay's comedies that under-performed at the box office.
After that came a phase where many felt that Akshay was doing too many desi action masala films. ROWDY RATHORE was a Blockbuster, but then after that KHILADI 786 and BOSS underperformed at the box office.
For Akshay to come back to the comedy zone now feels fresher!
The theatrical trailer of ENTERTAINMENT has received appreciation. Same with the songs (Veeray Di Wedding, Tera Naam Doon, Johnny Johnny).
The film looks all set to take a strong opening at the box office. Opening day collection will likely be similar to HOLIDAY, maybe even better as ENTERAINMENT gives the audience more of an entertaining vibe from its promos than HOLIDAY did, but on the other hand HOLIDAY had an established heroine in a lead role (Sonakshi Sinha) whereas ENTERTAINMENT doesn't (Tamannaah Bhatia) . Single screens and mass dominated areas will open the best because Akshay Kumar has a solid fan base amongst the masses. North India, another area where Akshay Kumar has a solid fan base, will have an opening that is not upto the mark (specifically in Punjab) because big Punjabi film AA GAYE MUNDE UK DE (which stars Jimmy Shergill for those who may not have known about the film) is releasing on the same day as ENTERTAINMENT and will affect ENTERTAINMENT's collections in that area.
Akshay Kumar has said that ENTERTAINMENT is the funniest film he has done, and I feel the WOM for ENTERTAINMENT will likely be strong amongst the masses/single screen audience.Multiplex audience will likely appreciate the film too, especially given the fact that family audience likes to see comedy films and they would likely to come to see the film at multiplexes. The film seems to provide fun family entertainment that the family audience would enjoy. Director duo Sajid-Farhad were the writers of many big hit films in this past, such as CHENNAI EXPRESS, READY, SINGHAM, and HOUSEFULL 2, and not only are they the directors of ENTERTAINMENT, but they have written this film too. Therefore, there is a strong chance that they have made an entertainer that will be appreciated by the public. The human-animal relationship being shown in the film (Akshay Kumar and the dog) is a fresh concept for Bollywood films and could easily strike the right chord with the audience.
The release date of ENTERTAINMENT is a problem though. Majority of the film-watching audience in India has already spent a lot of money watching Salman Khan's KICK, and there's another huge film coming next week: SINGHAM RETURNS. There will be audience that will still be watching KICK in theatres, but KICK shouldn't really affect ENTERTAINMENT's opening collections to a huge extent because as of this Friday, KICK will enter it's third week. However, ENTERTAINMENT only having a one week free run at the box office (SINGHAM RETURNS releases next week) makes it difficult for ENTERTAINMENT to be very successful, especially if the distributors really have bought the film for huge prices as being reported.
My Box Office Predictions for ENTERTAINMENT:
Opening Day: 12 crores
Opening Weekend: 40+ crores
Lifetime Collections: 70+ crores
Overall Box Office Verdict: Average
