Do you realize that the argument that you are making is a seriously flawed one.Based on that not a single movie can be said to have worked because of the actor, good script or not.Any one can then come up and say "Oh you know that movie worked because of its story, people like it that why it made all those crores etc. etc."
Do you realize how many movie with good content don't even recover their investment costs??
Aamir is what made 3 Idiots? When I think of 3 Idiots, the first thought that comes to mind is the story, Aamir's character comes much later (and there could be a lot of other people who think the same, remember, its a world with over 2 billion population and there are as many opinions as there are people). Other characters were as good as Rancho. I didn't even remember his character name until you mentioned it in your post. If it was only Aamir's movie, or Rancho, then it would have been called 1 Idiot not 3 Idiots.
I never said that 3 Idiots without him would have become an ATBB. I said it would have been successful without Aamir, too. There is a difference between ATBB and successful😊.
Secondly, yes, a lot of movies don't earn as much as they should even when the content is good but to credit only one person with the success of a movie is lame - going by your logic, Barfi became successful because of: Ranbir? or Priyanka, or Illeana? The content, of course, had no part whatsoever in it earning as much as it did and the music was just there for the sake of it. It was Ranbir or PC or Illeana that made it successful.
Thirdly, some movies only work because of the actors like Ghajini or Ready and not the content. Although I like Ghajini (Thank God I hadn't met zealous Aamir fans back then to ruin it for me) but its not exactly a movie cited for its script. That was through and through the star cast movie. With 3 Idiots, the script, director, supporting characters, etc. all played a huge part.
My problem, for the lack of a better word, is with people contributing 3 Idiots success to Aamir only. It's not just Aamir in that movie. I sure would like to see only Aamir or any other star in a movie with only them, no one else, not even another object and then make that movie an ATBB or Hit and I'd concede that 3 Idiots became ATBB solely because of Aamir. Before that happens, I'd still say that Aamir wasn't the only factor for its current BO status.
Anyways, there was a similar topic a while ago here where a similar point was raised. I don't want to start that discussion again.
