thank u for a good reply. i wish more people discuss like this here.

it is recent but in the beginning festival release used to better movies at least. now they are all time blockbusters in terms of marketing campaign. not sure entertainment wise.

Agree it converted into every year rituals . Collection of movies also more on diwali eid etc. day. Due to many factors like consider diwali its holiday target consumer r mostly youth workin class families in cities etc who just celebrate diwali in evening thats why diwali day collection is more compare to other normal day so also festival hangover extend to next few days. Behind all these Yash raj movie started this ritual and that production house benefited most if we look at history, Every year one hero shouting diwali gift another one edi lene aunga another one christmas:)

It is just for extended holidays that come with these festivals.
For me festival time is time to connect with family and friends. We didn't even watch TV! It's always celebrations, decorations, shopping, playing games (cards on Diwali).
I don't know who goes to theatre when there's a mood of gaiety around.

I think it's mostly the ones who don't celebrate that festival, but have a holiday, go to watch the film.

Extended holidays plus general mood of gaiety due to which people focus less on work and are willing to waste money on entertainment, might contribute to success of films released in such period. I remember we'd get teachers to not give us any homework around Diwali holidays, and get extension for deadlines even days after the festival.😆 The atmosphere used to be relaxed for whole month.

Bollywood cashes on that relaxed mood in festive days.

You might not but many people do.It's very rare to find an empty theatre while watching a movie on a festival. Moreover these festivals are national holidays which means people who don't celebrate the festival get a holiday so they watch a movie with the family. That's the reason why ticket rates are high during festivals.
It's a win win situation for the theatre and the distributor.

I am not religious and my family doesnt really celebrate any of these festivals. So lol. I definitely wouldn't watch a movie on Diwali or Christmas though. Christmas because its excuse to get family together. diwali because I like seeing the lanterns

bazigar comment is spot on. nobody used to release big movie on these festivals it is more of a 21st century thing. for the working class which is majority among movi goers, these festivals are hardly 1-2 days vacation which goes in festival things. on top of that some big producers have cheated the audience by releasing crap movies like Dhoom3. Now common man is careful.

we may see reversal of trend soon when big movies will avoid holidays. marketing media tries best still but people are smart now and avoid these false advertising claims.

Well Ed is a holiday for most part of our country, since Muslim population is less in India. Same goes for Christmas which is celebrated only among Christians..
On other hand Diwali is festival of Hindu and is indeed a big one. The whole day gets occupied in celebration, prayers and then bursting of crackers in night leaving no time for family to venture out and watch a film.

This is also the main reason why, film having a opening on Ed or Christmas has more collection than that opening on Diwali!
