Do not continue if you have not watched the movie. This does contain spoilers. So at the end it turns out Mohit Suri did not just copy one line from the movie for his trailer, he actually copied the plot. Girl gets murdered after talking on the phone. Guy hunts the killer down stops him from killing new people. He promises to not kill him yet and beats him mercilessly on numerous occasions. One of the time includes in a room with medical supplies where the victim is a nurse/ pharmacy girl. Guy has a cop "friend" on the side who tries to stop him. Guy finds out girl was pregnant which the girl also revealed to the killer. The killer has a disgusting piece of shit for best friend who helps him think. The killer puts two and two together and decides to kill the girls family. Which he does after calling the guy and letting him know what he is about to do. At the end he calls the police, but then gets killed anyways.
Yes his characters were different and they had own story, and they were driven by different reasons but it was a copy. What is interesting to me is every character that existed in I saw the devil in one form or another exists in Ek Villain. Although I felt Ek Villain's addition did not make the movie better.
I think Siddharth did a wonderful job playing Guru. He was different from LBH. I thought LBH really pulled of the Devil character. He truly made the killers life miserable, although Guru's character did not seem that deadly he did tug at my heart. I felt his anguish.
The addition of Shraddha's character was a very good addition. Especially in hindi movies we need these love stories, so it makes sense why it was added. My sister hates this criticism of mine but in I saw the devil when the girl is killed it is absolutely brutal, it is scary, it is a torture. The girl is raped, the girl is alive and crying, the girl is chopped to pieces. In Ek Villain yes there were few slashes here and there with that damned screwdriver but at the end she got thrown out the window. People are thrown out the window all the time in movie that is an easy death scene. It does not seem as dramatic or even dangerous. Like I still have nightmares from the way the girls are killed in I saw the devil. Ek Villain kind of skips all of that. My sister thinks it is appropriate for the Indian audience since we do not like gore. And maybe she is right.
Another thing I didn't like was that Ritesh wasn't as bad of a villain as Kyung Chul. Which made the movie less dramatic and less intense.
In Ek Villain Ritesh kills the father and it is supposed to be a big deal for Siddharth, this is the dramatic moment when the tables have turned. But it doesn't feel that important when compared to the scene from I saw the devil. We are supposed to assume the dad means something to Siddharth but we never really saw any glimpses of their relationship. In ISTD you see over and over again how much the girl's family means to LBH. You truly understand why this loss is a big deal and you cry when they are killed.
I liked the ending of Ek Villain more than I loved ISTD. It was beautiful. There were some really beautiful parts in the movie. The songs are beautiful. Everytime they draw the smily face on the glass I had to wipe my tears. There was nothing like that in the original version. I thought Siddharth was marvelous. I was unhappy Mohit Suri copied yet another one of my favorite Korean movies and denied it because his characters are different, but it was a good movie. I liked it.
