Do not continue if you have not watched the movie. This does contain spoilers.
So at the end it turns out Mohit Suri did not just copy one line from the movie for his trailer, he actually copied the plot. Girl gets murdered after talking on the phone. Guy hunts the killer down stops him from killing new people. He promises to not kill him yet and beats him mercilessly on numerous occasions. One of the time includes in a room with medical supplies where the victim is a nurse/ pharmacy girl. Guy has a cop "friend" on the side who tries to stop him. Guy finds out girl was pregnant which the girl also revealed to the killer. The killer has a disgusting piece of shit for best friend who helps him think. The killer puts two and two together and decides to kill the girls family. Which he does after calling the guy and letting him know what he is about to do. At the end he calls the police, but then gets killed anyways.

Yes his characters were different and they had own story, and they were driven by different reasons but it was a copy. What is interesting to me is every character that existed in I saw the devil in one form or another exists in Ek Villain. Although I felt Ek Villain's addition did not make the movie better.

I think Siddharth did a wonderful job playing Guru. He was different from LBH. I thought LBH really pulled of the Devil character. He truly made the killers life miserable, although Guru's character did not seem that deadly he did tug at my heart. I felt his anguish.

The addition of Shraddha's character was a very good addition. Especially in hindi movies we need these love stories, so it makes sense why it was added. My sister hates this criticism of mine but in I saw the devil when the girl is killed it is absolutely brutal, it is scary, it is a torture. The girl is raped, the girl is alive and crying, the girl is chopped to pieces. In Ek Villain yes there were few slashes here and there with that damned screwdriver but at the end she got thrown out the window. People are thrown out the window all the time in movie that is an easy death scene. It does not seem as dramatic or even dangerous. Like I still have nightmares from the way the girls are killed in I saw the devil. Ek Villain kind of skips all of that. My sister thinks it is appropriate for the Indian audience since we do not like gore. And maybe she is right.

Another thing I didn't like was that Ritesh wasn't as bad of a villain as Kyung Chul. Which made the movie less dramatic and less intense.

In Ek Villain Ritesh kills the father and it is supposed to be a big deal for Siddharth, this is the dramatic moment when the tables have turned. But it doesn't feel that important when compared to the scene from I saw the devil. We are supposed to assume the dad means something to Siddharth but we never really saw any glimpses of their relationship. In ISTD you see over and over again how much the girl's family means to LBH. You truly understand why this loss is a big deal and you cry when they are killed.

I liked the ending of Ek Villain more than I loved ISTD. It was beautiful. There were some really beautiful parts in the movie. The songs are beautiful. Everytime they draw the smily face on the glass I had to wipe my tears. There was nothing like that in the original version. I thought Siddharth was marvelous. I was unhappy Mohit Suri copied yet another one of my favorite Korean movies and denied it because his characters are different, but it was a good movie. I liked it.

The film was made to appeal more to Indian audience and also Mohit very finely included message of Karma in film with way his story lines were going..
Correct me if I am wrong, Guru in ISTD was not a negative character at all as in didn't have any streaks of darkness and Rakesh in ISTD also didn't have a back story! They gave a fine reason for everyone's action and also culminated the story nicely that 'Karma will get you at end' and 'One will also pay for its misdeeds'

Even though Ek Villian's story was less dramatic and way girl's were killed were less nerve-racking, but it was appropriate for Indian audience. Anything more that that would have been censored (and I am sure it must have been)

And making Rakesh less villian-ious made people sympathetic towards him :/

guys i know about censors but i have a question isn't the censor board same for all regional films as well ? caz if it is then they could've easily added more caz villain is also Highly inspired from Malyalam film Thevram & the torcure in that is lot more intense & actual torcure for killing Dq's wife so brutally the girl head was chopped off Much like ISTD and his revenge was also much like ISTD so if they can show much more in a Malayalam film why can't they show it in hindi this just killed the film and taken so much from it yeah you push the girl &she's dead ok Like even in Ghajini kalpana was murdered was way worse way and is still very fresh in my mind & stayed with me till now so i doubt it;s the problem with the censors
here is a promo of thevram you can see the similarities as in the hood the font the colors etc

Even if censor would have allowed, I don't think director would have tried to include it in film since it would have clearly got A certificate making the film gross less money and less people watching it. Action scenes were fine and were more appropriate to Indian audience which majorly comprises of family viewing audience...

I thought about the censor board too and I think they could've pushed it more. I agree that even in Ghajini Kalpana's death left more of a mark. It seemed so brutal. It devastated me and till date it is one of the saddest moments I have ever seen.
I wonder if it has to do with the sequence of the movie. Aisha died within the first few moment before the audience even gets to know her or feel anything for her. In ISTD the girl dies within the first few minutes as well but because the murder is so brutal it leaves more of a mark

i don't know am not asking for them to put all the rape scenes in the film liek in ISTD which were really gross but the torcure should've been a little more like sid makes these big claims in dialogues that he won't let him live and all he does is throw 3, 4 punches and kicks Hain is that it thoda aur toh banta hi that
Arre ghajini main aamir did way more violence HAHAHA and i believe it was a Big commercial hit

Great comparison you've drawn, I've favorited this thread:) I haven't seen I Saw The Devil but after reading all these interesting views on how similar and different the 2 movies are from another, it really sparks my curiosity.

I assume that Mohit Suri didn't think the selling point of the film was the thrill, suspense,or brutal killings of it. Rather he thought it's the romance, songs and the high emotional quotient. That's the only possible explanation I can think of for him to have revealed everything within the trailers itself. In ISTD the serial killer kills for pleasure I believe. And what set this film apart from ISTD was that the serial killer had a motive behind the murders. Even that suspense was killed with Ritesh in the promo saying "Meri Sullo, kabhi kabhi toh mann karta hai ke main uski jaan le loon, par main uspe kabhi haath nahi utha sakta, bahut pyaar karta hoon main apni biwi se."

I think the way I interpreted the trailer of the film was incorrect. I thought it to be a intense thriller with some shocking plot twist.. I wish they could've elaborated on Ritesh's character a bit more and the relationship he had with Aamna.

And I completely agree, the death of Shraddha's father would've been so much more impactful had there been sequences of interaction between Sid and her father. A lot of people think Shraddha went OTT and I had the same feeling in the beginning of the film but her character grew on me and I thought she was adorable.

Despite all of this indeed this film had many beautiful moments. The child holding Sid's hand was soo touching. The smiley face on the car window got me everytime. There were so many places where I was sobbing, the way Shraddha kidnapped the poor old man from the mental institute and got him married, and the way it transitioned into Banjaare. Though Siddharth I felt fell for her way too quick (keeping in mind that he was a bad ass gangstaa) it was still beautiful. The songs in general were heavenly. Quite a haunting movie, tugs at your heart strings.

ISTD hi nahi... EV is mixed up of many films plus dexter tv serial...

Shivam from Awarapan is exactly portrayed by Guru of Ek Villain... same story runs in background, in both the movies hero lost his love... heroine wants hero to be good guy.,...

Murder 2 ka devil villain is copied here but in Dexter form (same theme music)... Ritesh did fab, but character was weak... only sympathy comes for him that he is rejected one n gets this sickness 2 kill gals.

Bollywood has copied n remakes many films... but her in Ek Villain, the writers n director is acting shamelessly claiming it to be their original work 😆

The smiley face on windows is a direct lift from Red John in the TV series The Mentalist.

Suri makes good movies but ends up getting too "inspired" by some movie or the other.

Awaraapan is an underrated movie. Thats his finest movie till date. And probably the least "inspired" too.
