Let the law accept it first. 😳 Homosexuality is a crime legally in India. Do you think anybody would come out openly then? This is one homophobic country.
Coming out gay would be career suicide in Bollywood. There are various reasons that will deter people from coming out.
- India is still largely a homophobic country. People still look down on and reject gay people in society. It is not a positive atmosphere to come out.
- Legally the supreme court made homosexuality criminal again last year. Celebrities could become a soft target for corrupt cops to blackmail and harass.
- Even though the film industry claims not to be homophobic, gay people are caricaturized and made the butt of all jokes. Gay jokes have become a norm. People are afraid of being ridiculed.
- Finally and most importantly Indian fans have a hard time separating the actor from the person. You see that with fans and bashers who cannot see positives/negatives stars have as a person. Their profession as actors is tied to their identity as a person. If Matt Bomer or Neil Patrick Harris romance women, people accept it. Matt and Neil the actors are not defined by Matt and Neil the people. If someone came out gay, it would be difficult for Indian audiences to accept them playing heterosexual roles. They may get typecast as gay. Yes, while straight actors play gay characters all the time the opposite is always not as smooth. And straight actors have received flak for their gay roles as well.
