17 Funny Gestures That Only Indians Use

Indians are the most expressive beings on earth. We don't believe in subtleties. Melodrama is deeply embedded into our systems and until we haven't moved at least a hundred muscles, we do not consider anything expressive enough. Whatever the emotion it is that we're trying to convey, there is definitely a gesture for it. We've seen our parents do it, which is why we sometimes find it difficult to control these involuntarily actions. And believe me, there is no place else in the world that has such interesting gestures.

These GIFs show you some of the most common Indian gestures.

What / Why / When / Where / Who?

The question you've asked is incomplete until you've twisted your hand and jiggled it in the face of the other person like a Bharatnatyam mudra. The gesture can be used to express any of the five Ks - Kya, Kyun, Kab, Kaun, Kahan?

The I'll-Handle-It

There is nothing in the world we can't handle. There is a solution for everything and even a gesture to put this across. Whoever invented this one, took 'straight from the heart' a little too literally.

The Forehead Slap

We bet you've seen your mother do this a hundred times. It is usually used in three situations.

1. When you see your little ones fight.

2. When someone irritates you so much that all you can do is beat your own forehead in helplessness.

3. Next level helplessness.

4. When you've lost all faith in humanity.

Very Good

We don't even need words to appreciate things. Just making a circle with the thumb and the index finger says it all - good, very good, awesome, fantastic, mind blowing or any other superlative. So, what are you going to do the next time your girlfriend asks you 'how do I look?'

And when it comes to women, the expression is a lot more maniacal!

Finger Biting

It's the Indian way of saying 'oh sh*t!' We do this when we realize we've done something stupid, like having forgotten to delete the internet history before handing the laptop over to the father.

Chhado!

'Forget it' is too 'vilayati'; 'chhado' is much more colloquial and fun, don't you think?

The 'Spare Me'

Have you ever annoyed someone so much, that instead of arguing back, they just went

We bet you have.

Hence Proved

If you gotta prove a point, you have to hold an imaginary pen, and drop it softly in the air. Any argument in the world can be won with this gesture. Dads love this one.

The Ear Pulling

Ever wondered why your left ear is longer than your right one? Thanks to Indian mothers. Nowhere else in the world would you find such gentle gestures.

The Slap Threat

The ear pulling gesture is most often followed by the slap threat. All Indian men get this every day of their lives - from mothers, siblings and even girlfriends!

Even fathers do it!

Chin Dislocation

Even when it comes to expressing love, Indians are as harsh. Gently placing their hand around the bride's chin, they shake the soul out of her.

The Knuckle Cracker

This one needs no explanation. You've seen it in movies and you've seen your own mother do it to others.

The Indian Whistle

We told you, Indians just don't believe in subtleties. Whether it is calling a friend, or eve-teasing - this is how we roll.

Highly uncommon, but yeah, some women do it too.

The Back Slap

Indians love to greet each other by slapping their backs. The only problem is, they just don't stop once they start.

The Bobblehead

It is only in India that you can find the answer to every question in just a head shake.

The same headshake can be used to ask a question and answer it too!

Wanna go shopping?

It can be combined with the 'very good' gesture too, to describe something beyond fantastic.

And of course, SRK has his own little meaning to the legendary bobblehead motion.

The F You

You know how they show middle fingers in the West? Well, that's not how we do it. So, when in India, do as the Indians do.

The 'Babaji Ka Thullu'

And to top 'em all, stand up comedian Kapil Sharma gave us this legendary modern Indian gesture that the world will soon follow.

These gifs r like fast forward comedy. I find it hard to laugh.. coz it looks so unnatural. Even the best scene of a gr8 mvoie wud pathetic in fast forward speed... not necessarily funny.
