BTW K, your thread is grabbing some eyeballs surely.
Just wanted to know, if you have watched Mrityudand - I have and I liked the acting prowess of all involved. Only the ending jarred, I think.

In case you watched, towards the end, there is a scene where the male members of the village comes to Mohan Agashe's house to kill the characters played by Shabana Azmi and Madhuri. They very well thought that it would be a cakewalk for them - the powerful men in the village, led by Agashe was not very happy with Ketki (Madhuri's character) supporting Shabana's character to tell the truth about her husband, Mohan Agashe being impotent - and passing on all the blame to Shabana, for not yielding a child.

Little did they expect other females of the village to be in that same house - all silent, waiting for the mob to arrive - highlighting the fact that they did not need their male counterparts to protect them.

I really liked that scene- though I understand that for the issues highlighted in the movie, there is a lot of difficulty in projecting the desired outcome (s).

Yeh my thread is grabbing eyeballs, but for all d wrong reasons.😳

Yup tht was such a powerful scene and yes all played their part well, but again madz was superb. Even in a fiery role she did not resort to being OTT nd her use of her eyes to express her anger, instead of loud dialogues was awesome.

Do you think its dignified to use Tax Payers Moneys to DANCE at some concert? Sorry, That's not dignity my friend.

Personally, I find this highly prejudicial and judgmental. Quite saddening actually to see people express such regressive views.

Yes, fans can be extremely annoying when they place celebrities on a pedestal and unquestioningly worship them. But I don't see why obsessive fandom in anyway affects the dignity of a celebrity. It isn't as if the celebrity is exercising some Jedi mind control to make people obsessive.

I also see absolutely nothing wrong in a fifty year old woman portraying a prostitute in an item song. She could portray a stripper too if she wanted for all I care. After all it is just role playing. She is merely playing a character. Nothing undignified about that. Heck, I don't even have a problem with actual strippers or prostitutes.

But then again, everyone has freedom to perceive dignity as they will.

I have to clarify some things that have been brought up in this topic, and I don't have time to quote each and every one of you. I love how my words gets twisted, some of you should become script writers for Indian serials.

First of all, I never said that I don't want older actresses to work. I haven't said that anywhere. I do however, think that the work they do should be substantial.

Yes, there is nothing wrong with playing a prostitute, but I would only agree to that if it was SUBSTANCIAL. Since you guys claim Madhuri is the "Amitabh" of the industry, why would she resort to an item number? Where is the talent now? I honestly see it as desperation and a cry for help.

And some of you guys are huge hypocrites. You're calling me regressive lol, aren't you the same people who make fun of Sridevi's daughter and the clothes that she wears? I clearly remember some of you making such a big deal about "values and indian culture" when 17 year old Jhanvi was wearing a bikini on a family vacation. So you have family values FOR THAT, but its okay for Madhuri as a 50 year old to act like a prostitute? Arent you the same people who make fun of Sridevi because she showed her stomach in a magazine? Even in this topic, that Dazzell or watever member made a dig a Sridevi's marriage, calling her a "house-breaker", he/she's blaming "a woman" for the failure of Boney;s first marriage...and You're calling ME regressive? What A JOKE

I personally don't want to see Madhuri as a prostitute, because I don't find that dignified, I find it cheap and desperate. It has nothing to do with being regressive. Its about respect. I would never want my grandma to be playing a prostitute on-screen at age 50. That's my opinion. I suggest some of you look up the word regressive before you start throwing it out there.

People who have pointed fingers at Sridevi or put her down for her marriage with Boney Kapoor are wrong. First of all her personal life has nothing to do with her career. Sridevi is an accomplished actress and a superstar in her own right. She too succeeded in a male dominated era and deserves full due credit for her accomplishments. I am more of a Madhuri fan, but I think it is absolutely ludicrous to put down Sridevi for any reason. While I prefer Madhuri for personal sentiment and nostalgia, I think both are great in their own right and it is unbecoming of anyone to put down the other just to make their favorite seem better.

Secondly, we as third parties have no right to pass judgment on other people's relationships and marriages. Marriages fail. People get hurt. Human emotions are complicated. It is regressive and unfair to lay the blame squarely on one person's shoulders and call them homewrecker. When relationships fail, all parties involved have a role to play. People do make mistakes carried away by emotion. The important thing is that despite accusations and finger pointing, Sridevi has conducted herself in a mature dignified manner and worked hard to maintain relationships with her step children. That is commendable. Personally, I have defended Sridevi on several occasions when people have chosen to trash her personal life.

I believe that age shouldn't matter. Older people can do item songs, reveal their bodies, romance on screen as long as it is well done. Amitabh Bacchan in Boom was disgusting. But I think Cheeni Kum and even Nishabd were good roles and portrayed two good stories, both dealing with different kinds of emotions. Similarly Madhuri there was nothing undignified about Madhuri in Ghagra. I found it well done. I may not have enjoyed something more overtly sleazy. People will have their own perceptions on what is acceptable. I know most people found Nishabd disgusting creepy as well, but for me Amitabh was just playing a character and did it well. I will however find it regressive when people use arbitrary moral standards or age based rules to judge people. And yes, I will also find it regressive when people choose to judge other people's marriages and relationships on arbitrary social standards.

After Devdas was released in 2002, there were a couple of dissertations/ papers discussing about the various aspects of the novel and how it has been made into films so many times, and in so many different languages.

One of these papers were on the use of navrasa in the film in its song and dance sequences. And the person who wrote the paper went into depths about how Madhuri expressed 4 different rasas in the Maar Dala song ...

It was an informative read, and mostly spoke positive about the adaptation, though I wish SLB had gone slow on the red colour a bit

I have always wondered about the more piya and immediate dhai shyam rok layi song placement and the yearning.
Does any such paper exist online?
WOuld be worth a read.
SLB is a student of dance and devdas was where he experimented most with natya I would say.

I think I had read 3-4 such papers/ notes/ dissertations then since the music and most of the dances were spellbounding in Devdas.

Will surely check if I have them - I might have 1 or 2 of them, will share with you over PM.

Thanks

@Poetic - another one of her roles tht was really portrayed beautifully by her was Anjali in Pukar. She was always the lurker trying to draw Anil's attn which she didn't get nd den she played the scorned woman very well. In tht song 'Hai jaana', it is difficult to recognize Madz, coz she has such a bitchy and jealous expression throughout the song nd her body language was bang on nd den the self-loathing towards the end...awesome!

It was one of d better etched character tht Madz played nd was also layered nd she did an awesome job. Once again she played it very subtlety.

Yes K, Pukar was a good movie and as Anjali, Madhuri had done a good jolb.
But the film suffered the same problem as others - a weak ending. Wonder why the ending always plagues most of our good movies? 😕
