In my opinion to portray a good relationship on screen you have to portray all aspects of the chemistry - physical, emotional, intellectual. People are emotionally connected to close friends as well. It is the physical attraction and desires that makes a relationship romantic. Watching po*n with family is for sure awkward and crazy. But I don't think good healthy relationships should be awkward.
It can be implied doesn't need to be shown.
