Jacqueline, Kangana, Kalki, Konkona, Divya Dutta: Who Was 2013s Best Supporting Actress?
January 28th, 2014 by Nayandeep

Whilst the industry was going gaga about the Deepikas, the Sonams, the Sonakshis, the Vidyas and the Kareenas, there was a special lot of actresses, who despite not having the lead role spiced up the entire film with their innovative ways of gifting the film with apt character portrayals. Yes, the supporting actresses, the ones who have totally shunned away from the dark dungeons and come to the fore, have somehow managed to steal in most of the spotlight this year when it came to performances.

Superlative yet brisk and effective, these supporting actresses made their presence felt, at times even more than the titular actress and hence find their way into the coveted list for 2013's Best Supporting Actress category.

Jacqueline Fernandez for Race 2:

Stylish, sexy and seductive, Jacqueline modeled the perfectly mischievous Omisha with lan as she took charge over the dark grey character she was slated to play in this racy thriller. From superlative fencing stunts to the brilliant mix of coyness, sweetness and the conniving maneuvers moulded into one, Jackie's Race 2 avatar was stunningly bewitching, both in terms of looks and performance.

Richa Chadda for Fukrey

It would not be wrong to call this dusky damsel the dark horse of Bollywood! While she is busy taking baby steps en route to stardom, Richa Chaddha has showed immense potential and grit to make it large in the industry. And with her naughty Punjabaan act, she epitomized the desi charm like no other. We went oo-la-la as Richa mouthed abuses and took the Fukreys on a stormy ride. Wow Richa!

Swara Bhaskar for Raanjhanaa

She was wonderful in Tanu Weds Manu and she simply made a thunderous impact amidst heavyweight starlets like Sonam Kapoor and Dhanush. Playing the coy docile, forever-in-love lost-in-dreams Bindiya in this utterly delicious romantic tale, Swara Bhaskar's performance was top notch and we could not stop gauging her moves every second, frame by frame! The scene where Dhanush elopes from his marriage with Bindiya leaving Swara shattered and aghast was pitch perfect and gives us goosebumps.

Divya Dutta for Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

Divya Dutta in a still from movie Bhaag Milkha Bhaag'

This one lady has never failed to impress us, with the versatility and the variety she brings on screen. Playing Milkha's sister with powerful aplomb, Divya made a bombastic impact in a film that was otherwise a total male centric biopic. And guess what? She had much more screen time than the lead actress did. With stupendous performances, Divya has outscored almost all her contemporaries today with her caliber and body of work. And it's time that we see more of her in titular roles coz she can definitely be the it' girl for the brand of women centric films, that are on an all time high today. As Naseer saab put it in The Dirty Picture, Actress ki zindagi elected government ki tarah hoti hai. Paanch saal government, phir support'. Here in Bollywood, Support ka alag naam hai Divya Dutta! Get it?

Kangana Ranaut for Krrish 3

She was meant to be tricking, manipulative, mysterious and boisterous! She chose to be all of them in varying quantities as she commanded over her role with vigour. I had never been a Kangana Ranaut fan, but Kaya changed my views total topsy turvy. Essaying the different wavelengths of emotions spread across the spectra, Kangana beautifully painted the character of the mutant as she delivered one of the most formidable acts this year. Not only did she look chic, she definitely made heads turn with her ravishing act. Priyanka Chopra, are you listening?

Supriya Pathak for Ramleela

Supriya Pathak in a still from movie Ramleela'

She spells MAGIC on screen whenever she decides to be a part of it. From the otherwise blunt Hansa to the menacing Dhankor Baa, Supriya Pathak stands as the biggest consort battleship that Bollywood has seen in the past year. Given her ability to adapt to different roles, it was no surprise to have been mesmerized by her grueling negative act, who in the end wins hearts all over. The expressions on the face told a total story and her intrigued stratagem gave a whole new dimension to the plot. We bow to your talent, Supriya mam!

Kalki Koechlin for Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

Kalki Koechlin in a still from movie Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani'

Had she been not there in the film, The Ranbir-Deepika duo would have never ever got back together much like the real life story, ehh?). But thank god, even though there was no Kalki during their real time affair, when Ranbir's Bunny decided to woo Deepika's Naina a second time around, Kalki's Aditi definitely helped knock some sense into them. Refreshingly unabashed and unapologetic, Aditi infused life into the film. Adding the dash of spunk and effervescence, we deserve to see this girl in a full fledged Bollywood film soon! Given the way this one woman has metamorphosed ever since her Dev D debut, it would not be too much to ask for, we presume.

Amrita Rao for Satyagraha

Amrita Rao in a still from movie Satyagraha'

She took a few years in between to shed that girl-next-door looks and look mature on screen. Not withstanding the outcomes, Amrita carefully picked up some unconventional roles to make sure she stood out among the cluster of actresses, who are reduced to nothing but arm candies today. As Sumitra, she was not meant to be resplendent but subjective, not submissive but strong and voila she did it. Doing the vulnerable widow act with consummate ease and conviction, Amrita Rao's choices spoke over her fashion police images. True that!

Konkona Sen Sharma for Ek Thi Daayan

Konkona Sen Sharma in a still from movie Ek Thi Daayan'

If there was anything good in this Daayan flick, it was simply Koko's terrific performance. An actress of supreme caliber that she is, Koko gave Diana the shape and formidability that was expected. The way she pulled out the intimidating act was a mark of her sheer brilliance and genius. With those flashy eyes, that lambi choti and the coruscating look, Konkona was the one to die for. She might have been the negative character but more than that, she supported the film oh-so-wonderfully! Brownie points for that.

Aditi Rao Hydari for Boss

Aditi Rao Hydari in a still from movie Boss'

The film did falter but this woman tried her best to save it. From donning a bikini to gracing the frames with her feministic charm, Aditi tried every bit to woo the audience, not knowing that boss was not meant to entertain but exhaust us all of our energies! And with terrific actresses like Aditi being totally misjudged and misfit for such banal inane characters, it's a shame to film making. Don't repeat this Boss-y mistake ever again, Aditi!

I know the rest are pretty good but I found jacki to be the best one in race 2- she was good compared to her own past performances

no rocket science - Its Kangana, the role was the most physically demanding one and she pulled it off with aplomb...what a shame that she didn't get nominated for her performance in big awards. they all went against the roshan fraternity for K3 box office numbers and kangana paid a huge price.
