Let's start with your first crush.
It was one of my class teachers.
Have you bunked classes to go out on dates or movies?
Not dates but just to be a rebel, I used to get out of class for loo breaks and not show up for two hours (laughs). I used to spend time in the canteen and when someone would catch us, we misbehaved and refused to go back to class. Basically just to act rebellious, I bunked classes.
At what age, did you feel something like love?
I felt love very late, in my 20s. But I've had crushes in the past. When you're young, you tend to have crushes on every third person. You switch on the television and you have a crush on this guy. You open the magazine, you have crush on that guy.
Any massive crush that you recollect?
I wasn't into these things because I was quite ambitious. I started out pretty early, at the age of 17. I discovered love when I was 20. I feel either you can chase your dreams or chase your love (sniggers). I chose to chase my dreams.
Did you encounter any bitter incident of a guy chasing you?
After being an actor, it has happened. There were a few stalkers. It's a bit scary when people do scary things. They chase us and sit outside our houses, don't eat. They come from some corner of a village. In Mumbai, we stay in buildings. People can manipulate these watchmen. But what can you do? You can have your guards for a few days but you can't move around with guards all your life.
What's your idea of a romantic date?
Go for a walk and maybe have some beer. I love walking. Obviously, walking on Mumbai's streets is not possible. I don't get a chance here, but maybe in Europe when I go there. It's so surreal especially when you're having a cocktail or beer. The conversations then are not awkward. But otherwise when you sit opposite each other, it's a bit awkward. It feels as if you're put in a spot. (Laughs) Every action you do is magnified. But when you're walking, you're walking parallel to one another. That's when you're in your own world and still with the other person. The visual is changing every minute. Isn't it a great idea?
How important are looks? What qualities do you look for in a man?
Looks are very important. Here I don't mean those conventional, eye-nose proportions. I don't think we're the result of the food we eat. We're the result of our thoughts. We're who we think we are. Someone may find a certain guy ugly, but for me that person maybe really good-looking. The vibe, the way he carries himself, how intelligent and positive a person he is, matter. There are so many guys who come and audition for underwear ads and they could even be good-looking. But you can't have a conversation with them;rather you don't want to have a conversation with them. You can look through the face and understand what's behind that face. For me those aren't good looks. Fortunately, such guys don't even approach me because I have that don't-mess-with-me look all the time on my face.
What's the most striking compliment you've ever received?
I don't like compliments about my hair, Oh my god, you're so cute'. I like unusual compliments about things which aren't noticed by many like my voice, chin or maybe the toe nail.
While growing up, what were your romantic fantasies?
Buying those Archies cards with I love you music' once you open them! When I was young, we used to also listen to Dil toh pagal hai and other such romantic songs.
In an interview to Stardust, an actress said she has never watched po*n. Do you buy that?
She has never watched po*n? (Chuckles) There are morons like that. The bad news is not that she's lying, but it's the fact that she is not lying.
Do men give women stiff competition in the gossip department?
I don't think so. Men generally discuss cars, gadgets and suddenly, the discussion veers to some woman's boobs and then back to technology. I hate the conversations that men have.
One habit you can never stand in your boyfriend.
There are many habits I can't stand. When people tend to be restless and when they shake their leg and are unnecessarily fidgety, I can't stand them. I feel so horrible because I don't know what to do in such situations. I don't know where to go. Also, I don't like it when people smoke just for the sake of it. I can't handle that.
What's your take on long-distance relationships? Do you think chances of infidelity are higher in such cases?
Long-distance relationships don't work at all. In my case also, it didn't work.
Have you ever been cheated upon in a relationship? If your boyfriend cheats on you, but is remorseful and wants to get back, would you give him a second chance?
By cheating, you mean if my boyfriend has sex with someone else? I don't mind that. Cheating is a habit of the mind. People who cheat, cheat everywhere. They cheat in their profession and their personal lives. And the ones who don't cheat, they don't cheat anywhere. In a relationship with a man, my priority is not sex. A man and a woman stay together because the relationship is special. You can walk out anytime. Cheating doesn't exist when you don't hold onto people and tie them or control them. When someone wants to move away, you just let them go. That has helped me in my relationships. Hence, no man has ever cheated on me and neither have I ever cheated on any man. Every time we felt attracted to someone else, we moved out of it.
Considering you've been in a long-distance relationship in the past, tell us one good thing of being in one?
You value each other because you don't meet the person that often. You spend limited time together, so the time you spend together is so intense. It's not one of those ordinary days. It's beautiful. It would be a perfect day when you have breakfast together, have a conversation, and go for a film. It's so surreal. But the flip side is when you want to meet and talk to the person every day, that person is not there. There are pros and cons to it. The good is so good and the bad is so bad. Also, I don't like to meet people without any prior appointments. I hate it when a man, who is your so-called boyfriend, thinks he can walk into your house anytime and be in your bedroom. I hate people using my washroom and opening my cupboard without my consent. Even when my mum goes into my bedroom, I feel so awkward. Obviously, boyfriends don't understand that.
So for you, what makes a man desirable?
I'm attracted to men who're responsible. They say what they mean and they mean what they say.
Do you believe in the concept of true love? Do you think it exists?
Love exists. You love your mother, father, siblings, but attraction is different. Attraction and love together is a perfect combination. You can love everybody. You can give a gift to anybody, so love is like that. Love is a gift.
You'd said in an interview that dating a married man was a mistake. If you were on the other side and your husband would've cheated on you, how would you have reacted?
First of all, I don't believe in marriages. We live in a free society where we're not bound by any arrangement. We're mature and relationships can be handled in a mature way. We can walk out anytime. I don't understand why people lie or cheat. It's too much of a trouble to cheat and lie and then to hate yourself for doing that. I'm not going to date a cheater or a chronic liar.
Do you think sex is overrated?
No, it's not. Sex is great.
Can a relationship work if there's lack of physical intimacy?
If there's no spark in a relationship, it means that person is your best friend.
Which has been one of the most beautifully shot intimate scenes in an Indian movie so far?
I think the love scene between Emraan and me in Gangster.
Tell us one actor who can make any outfit look sexy?
I think Mr Bachchan is so sexy. He looked incredible in The Great Gatsby.

Nude shoot, right? No, I'm not into that.
What would you say to public servants who make bizarre and irrational statements on issues like rape, molestation and on the dignity of women?
They won't even understand what I'll say to them. They're incapable of understanding anything. They should just stitch their mouths. We should tell them if we wear longer skirts, would you allow us to stitch your lips?
Do you think prostitution should be legalised in India to curb heinous crimes like rape?
It isn't? I always thought it was legal. They should legalise it if they haven't already.
What is the ideal form of punishment for rapists?
If you kill a rapist, it doesn't mean you've completely taken care of the problem. They should be given life imprisonment and treat them psychologically because they're mentally sick. Some shit is going on in their minds; you need to fix their minds. A criminal has something off with the brain whether it's a psychological killer, rapist or kleptomaniac. If they're treated mentally, they could be of some use to the society.
