Krrish 3 continues to storm multiplexes; headed for 200-cr mark

by Rohini Nag (November 6, 2013)

Amid the din of firecrackers and euphoria of the Diwali festivities, there was one more reason to celebrate with gusto. Rakesh Roshan's Krrish 3, featuring son Hrithik, released with a bang and is till taking the box office by storm. This production, whose special effects are the talk of the town, has proved that the father-son duo sure delivers on their promises. And then some!

The film, which released on Friday, not only notched up fantastic numbers during its first weekend, it sustained those numbers on Monday as well. Programmers from various multiplex chains also believe that Krrish 3 will enjoy a smooth sail coming week as well and will soon join the Rs 200-crore club.

Amar Laykar, PVR

Krrish 3 is going great guns at our properties. The film, following the Diwali and weekend madness, has clocked ravishing returns, which is a new high for any Hindi film. Many shows have consistently witnessed 90-per cent occupancy and the kids just love our very own desi superhero. With around 20 to 24 shows on average at each property, we plan to sustain substantial shows for the film next week too. We expect Krrish 3 to close its first week at our properties at Rs 9.5 crore nett. It will definitely go down in the history books of our industry.

Harshad Parmar, Cinemax

The film took a fantastic start at our properties and the audience just loves Hrithik Roshan's superhero avatar. We expect the film to garner around Rs 6.5 crore nett in week one. Next week too we have allotted 60 per cent of our shows to Krrish 3 and 40 per cent to other Hindi, regional and English releases.

Ansh Kapoor, Fun Cinemas

The three-day weekend collections were Rs 1.26 crore at all Fun properties. On Monday, Krrish 3 earned Rs 80-90 lakh. The film has drawn an outstanding response at the ticket window and is still creating a huge buzz. We expect the film to close its first week at Rs 4 crore. We will be giving preference to Krrish 3 in the coming week as well.

Abhishek Rai, Fame & Inox

Krrish 3 has a very strong hold in the North circuits and also in Mumbai. The film will continue to be assigned preference in its second week. We expect the nett numbers to be around Rs 25 crore in Fame and Inox properties. It's amazing how the audience has received the film, especially children. We expect it to hold strong at the box office for a long time.

Ashish Saksena, BIG Cinemas

Krrish 3 has emerged a winner at the box office. We will give 90 per cent preference to the film during the second week as well as the film is doing exceptionally well. In the North region, CP Berar and CI have showed the best response.

Prem Lakhani, Rajhans

Krrish 3 has broken the record for the highest collections at six of our properties. Out all our shows we will have 66 per cent shows for the film coming week and expect week one to close at Rs 1.7 crore. The film has the audience under its spell.

Ashish Gogia, Suncity

We opened a new property with Krrish 3 and have elicited a 100-per cent response in most of our shows there. Overall, Krrish 3 has elicited 80 per cent occupancy at our properties and we expect it to close its first week at Rs 45 lakh, which will be the highest for any film at our properties.

Krrish 3 Juggernaut Continues To Smash Records

by Soumita Sengupta (November 6, 2013)

Krrish 3 is smashing records and, in just four days, the movie has proved that it will set a new benchmark for Indian filmmakers. The film released on Friday and till yesterday (Tuesday), it reeled in around Rs 113 crore (Only Hindi). This Rakesh Roshan blockbuster is expected to breach the Rs 200-crore mark by the end of its second week. Here's what distributors have to say.

Rajesh Thadani, Multimedia Combines, Mumbai

Krrish 3 is doing outstanding business all over India. The reviews are not great but the audience loves the film. Superhero films have always worked. We used to watch Hollywood superheroes and now we have our own Indian superhero. Krrish 3 has collected a record Rs 6 crore in its first five consecutive days in Mumbai. Since today is the first working day after the long Diwali weekend, there has been a 20-per cent drop in collections but the film will continue to make records this week. Today, Krrish 3 will do business of Rs 25 crore all over India and Rs 4 crore in Mumbai.

Brijesh Tandon, H K Tandon and Company, Delhi-UP

Krrish 3 has been doing outstanding business since the day it released. Although the film registered a slight drop on Saturday and Sunday due to the Diwali festivities, it did fabulous business in our circuit on Monday and Tuesday. Yesterday, collections totalled Rs 6 crore. There has been no major drop in numbers today and by end of next week, the film will breach the Rs 200-crore mark for sure.

Sanjay Ghai, Mukta Arts, Delhi-UP

Rakesh Roshan is a great director and he has proved it with Krrish 3 once again. Even our new-generation directors who have made superhero films have not achieved what he has. Krrish 3 has everything to woo the audience, from special effects, to a good story, emotions... Not surprisingly, the film has been reeling in over Rs 6 crore every day. Today, collections will be close to Rs 4.5 crore even though it is a working day.

Jaspal Dhingra, Nanaskar Enterprises

It seems there's no stopping Krrish 3, which the kids and family audience loves. Many cine-goers have returned to watch the film a second time. Yesterday, the film did business of over Rs 1 crore. No other movie has done so well on its fifth day. Today, it will reel in Rs 90 lakh.

Sarang Chandak, Shri Rang Films, CP

Hrithik Roshan has a magnetic pull and audiences wait for his releases with bated breath. And, as if in response, the actor has served up a smashing treat for his fans this Diwali. Everyone in CP loves the film and till yesterday, many multiplexes were house full for the entire day. Yesterday, the film earned Rs 1.18 crore and there is only a slight drop in collections today, which is not due to a drop not in footfalls but ticket prices. Today, Krrish 3 will garner Rs 90 lakh and will continue to do so in days to come.

Vijay Kher, NR Multimedia, CP

This film is doing outstanding business in every circuit including CP. It has already broken many records. For instance, for five consecutive days, the film earned around Rs 1 crore, every day. That is definitely a first in the CP circuit. Today, collections will total Rs 90 lakh.

Aditya Choksey, Morya Arts, CI

Krrish 3 is doing outstanding business and has broken many records. For instance, the movie earned Rs 1.45 crore on day five, which is a record. In comparison, Ek Tha Tiger reeled in Rs 1.2 crore on its fifth day. So Krrish 3 is setting new benchmarks. Even though today is the first working day after the Diwali break, there has been no major drop in collections. We expect Krrish 3 to earn around Rs 1 crore today.

Jeetu Khandelwal, Movie Pioneers, Orissa

Hrithik Roshan is the kind of actor movie buffs of all ages love to watch. He has also played a wide variety of roles, whether it was Jodha Akbar, Agneepath or Koi Mil Gaya and now Krrish 3. He built a massive fan following from his very first film, Kaho Na Pyaar Hai... In Orissa, we have very few multiplexes but, still, in just five days, the film has netted Rs 1.6 crore, which is a massive feat. Yesterday, collections totalled Rs 40 lakh and today the film will notch up Rs 30 lakh.

Found this on a blog. Explains wonderfully the underlying themes of the movie. (Contains spoilers)

Bollywood Blockbuster Fuses Mysticism and Mythology in A Battle of Good vs Evil

Krrish 3 is a film that topped many lists of most anticipated movies a few months ago. On release, there was a hysteria as Asians worldwide thronged to see the return of a superhero who they had missed and needed to see on the big screen again. With Krrish 3, Rakesh Roshan takes his story further and delivers an enjoyable entertainer which many have dubbed a crowd-pleasing popcorn fare. However, a closer look reveals the deeper themes he has brought to the surface in what can be seen as the ultimate good versus evil story, pitting darkness against light using directorial and storytelling devices which seep through the images on screen and allow the concepts explored to resonate long after the film has ended.

Krrish 3 begins with Rohit Mehra (Hrithik Roshan) makings discovery related to light giving birth to life. We see a plant that has died, withered and is devoid of colour, much like the film's villain who is portrayed in monotone colours, crippled and rooted to the earth physically due to his inability to walk. Before dawn, the able scientist is waiting for the sun to come up and illuminate the room through a special device he has created so as to confirm his theory. Light trails beam in a calculated structure designed to reflect and channel the bright energy. His discovery is that the power of light is a fuel for life but without restraint on this brilliant power it can overwhelm and destroy what it intends to give life to.

Simply put, without control of light, it is merely a contributor to the phase of darkness. He surmises that to harness solar energy a "filter with a brain" is needed and Roshan ensures his choice of words are no accident. By definition, a filter takes what is put into it and outputs a purified product, an analogy of which is revisited later.

The opening scene sets the stage for the themes and tone of the film as well as the overarching metamorphosis that Krrish himself will undergo as he is taken to a very dark part of himself when facing insurmountable loss, before plunging into the black void of death only to be resurrected and reborn in light.

By comparison Kaal (Vivek Oberoi), his nemesis, is first seen cloaked in darkness. His lair is lit by artificial light that glows from numerous digital screens and artificial life that fills his world. Rakesh Roshan makes it clear his villain is living in a self imposed exile built on illusion. He exists separated from the brightly coloured and naturally illuminated world that the other characters inhabit, choosing to create and devour the lives of others through manufacturing organisms and viruses that spread his overcast aspirations onto their subjects. His experimental mutants dubbed "maanwar" are allowed to exist to inflict pain and increase his power, and his viruses to not just afflict humanity with disease but to end it, with the antidote only available at a price that will fund his ongoing search for a cure to his own physically frail yet mentally extraordinary condition. One perfect juxtaposition of what he represents is the scene when the villain presents himself to Priya Mehra (Priyanka Chopra) for the first time. Kaal's silhouette lurks in the shadows before menacingly moving forward to close in on her confined state as his prisoner. His face is bled dry of colour and he emerges from the night as if to signify that this character is literally born in darkness. Throughout the film, his face and figure are dimly lit and in the majority of his scenes he is seen coming out of the shadows into a pale light. Rakesh Roshan uses this imagery to expertly convey his villain's motives, history and character through the way he is presented. He cleverly also utilises it to reinforce the central theme of overcoming the darkness of evil with light.

When he introduces us to the outside city in the world of Krrish, we see a landscape made up of right angles and industrial rods that represent a fusion of technology and architecture where one would expect someone like Kaal to be at home, yet his absence makes it safer. The city represents a technological paradise for digital natives yet one whose inhabitants are often let down by their surroundings. A plane's technical machinery fails and man's weapons of destruction are turned back on them when Kaal enters this new world, ably commanding the surroundings to do his bidding given he is a master of moving inanimate objects. Roshan portrays technology not only as advancing but also a source of human vulnerability. In the overall picture humanity's natural defences and instinct conquer the failings delivered by machinery.

The two main protagonists are presented as diametric opposites occupying different worlds. Krrish is seen leaping and bounding into people's lives, whisking them away from danger, while his polar opposite Kaal, the anti hero is constantly seen grounded, with even his paralysis ensuring he is closer to the ground than the people he seeks to destroy. Krrish enjoys his freedom through constantly exploring and watching over his city, while Kaal restricts his own surroundings and that of those around him. The relationship is symbiotic through inference, to understand the light we must comprehend and acknowledge the dark.

The use of reflections is scattered throughout the film highlighting a mechanism to project light, but also to indicate the dichotomy of Kaal and Krrish as polar opposites, like twin sides of the same coin with one that values life and the other embracing death. Rakesh Roshan has executed numerous devices throughout Krrish 3 to portray the various facets of reflections and their intrinsic connection to everything. In a pivotal scene, he shows Rohit looking at his reflection in a shard of glass leading to a moment of self-realization, where he discovers what he needs to do. It's both a physical reflection and an inner one, where he realises the sacrifice he must make for the greater good. Krishna too, sees himself reflected back in his wife's eyes, in his father's hopes and in the people he saves as he learns to embrace the light and responsibility of his role as a son, husband and father. He teaches a child that Krrish exists within everyone and is an ideal of giving back to the world selflessly, reflecting the good of humanity. Reflections can only exist with the presence of light, and Kaal in his fortress of darkness, is unable to hold a mirror to himself creating another depth to his failed redemption.

We see this concept further explored when Kaal sends his "maanwar" mutants to pursue Krrish and unleash a virus in India. When no longer cloaked in darkness, even the soulless chameleon mutant Kaaya (Kangana Ranaut) is taken by the good of humanity through her journey into the light. When in Kaal's shielded castle, daylight would not penetrate and the world that Kaal built was all she knew. When forced to live outside it she slowly ceases to become a reflection of others (her mutant ability) and holds a mirror to herself finding logic, remorse and an affection she's craved from her maker yet never received. In a scene where she stares introspectively in the mirror, her wide black eyes reflect light and appear tinged with a shine displaying a newfound appreciation of humanity which ultimately leads to her demise but not before she becomes one of the reasons Krrish succeeds. The goodness of Krishna ultimately is reflected in her, leading to her character's growth and change Again we see the themes of reflection, the relationship between light and dark and the moral precedent that resides within Krrish's ethos of selflessly serving others all explored in what could have been a one dimensional supporting character. Roshan uses the tools of his story to further ingrain the foundation of this instalment of his mythology.

There are many instances of Roshan using the duality of personalities to get his point across, and the fight of Krrish against Kaal is very much rooted in every good versus evil battle, including the Indian story of Ram and Raavan. Religion and mythology are also fused when the mutants are justified in existence with the presence of the "unseen" and "shape shifters" as mentioned in ancient texts. Roshan sets up the story to allow each character to play its part and add to the themes of the film, conjuring up a vision which uses visual aesthetics, subtle imagery that reinforces his idea and flashes of directorial brilliance that ensure the film deserves repeat viewing.

In the scene where Rohit sacrifices himself for his son, he is bathed in light and acts as the "filter with a brain" purifying his son through rebirth while generating a transformational rite of passage that involves losing a parent. The father who stated that he had missed his son's childhood milestones and would make up for this through the time spent with his grandchild is, in a moment, robbed of this opportunity while ironically giving a new life to his son. This rebirth is significant in that it takes Rohit's journey full circle, leaving Krishna with words to celebrate life and not grieve over what is lost. In the final confrontation with Kaal, Krrish is eclipsed by the bright light he uses to destroy the force of evil for once and for all in a spectacular visual display of light triumphing over darkness.

In the parting shot, Rakesh Roshan shows his hero watching over his city. The night sky is jet black yet the city is illuminated with the vibrancy of the night through lights in windows, the glow of night life and Krrish stands tall guarding the city from the darkness.

His journey is complete from boy to man, having faced emotional challenges that test what he is made of as well as those around him. Krrish learns the power of the light and how the darkness should not be allowed to overspread, with the balance reflected perfectly in a figure that is draped in dark colours with his fair skin and light eyes piercing through - another nod to the theme of dark and light and the balance that needs to be achieved to control it.

Rakesh Roshan delivers a film that not only entertains, but subtly infuses the eternal battle between good and evil as a war of darkness and light - literally and figuratively. His use of this as a central theme, backed up with directorial touches that frame the shots of the film to reinforce the tone of his story is masterful. Hrithik Roshan provides a power-packed performance making you believe in both Krishna and Rohit as separate characters, endearing the viewer to the sweet innocence of the father while also identifying with the youthful passion of the son. His ease of portraying both characters alongside Krrish, with the challenges the hero has to go through, bring out a tour de force that conquers the film throughout.

Rakesh Roshan's third act in India's most successful cinematic franchise moves the story forward while remaining rooted in the mythology he has created. Krrish 3 is a film you can dismiss as popcorn fare, enjoy as the continuing origin of a superhero or absorb as a cultivated celluloid creation par excellence, with shots reflecting overarching themes, spectacle to satisfy fans of the blockbuster and personal reflections from a filmmaker into his own life and relation with his son. Delve deeper and its many themes rooted in world culture, religions and mythology reveal a filmmaker who is fully aware of his craft and talented enough to present a universally appealing story. It's no coincidence his surname means "to illuminate" as it seems he has no intention of fizzling out anytime soon, only of burning brighter and setting new trends at the box office on his terms.

Krrish 3 is at cinemas now.

Krrish 3 Spellbind Single-Screen Audience

by Soumita Sengupta (November 6, 2013)

Krrish 3 has been breaking records and setting new benchmarks. Box Office India spoke to exhibitors to assess the performance of Krrish 3 at single-screen cinemas. Over to them:

Harsh Jain, Sanman Group (Chhattisgarh)

We have two properties and are running four shows in each property. From Monday onwards, Krrish 3 has done fabulous business and all eight shows were house full. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, people were busy celebrating the festival. Even today, occupancy has been 75 per cent and I believe it will remain the same. Apart from the Khans, Hrithik Roshan is the only other actor who has that magnetic aura. He caters to movie-buffs of all ages, which is why the Krrish franchise has been growing with every instalment.

Manoj Desai, Gaiety Galaxy and Maratha Mandir (Mumbai)

Krrish 3 is doing outstanding business at all single-screens. We are running eight shows in each multiplex and every show was house full till yesterday. Occupancy is 94 per cent today. I had actually expected a huge drop in numbers but all the shows are almost full at all our properties. Rakesh Roshan has made a brilliant film.

Sandeep Sareen, Chhavi Mahal (Varanasi)

Most films are forgettable today and there are only a handful that stay with you. Krrish 3 is one of them and it will not only create history but stay in your heart for all time. That's the kind of magic Rakesh Roshan has created. We have two properties and are running four shows in each screen. Till yesterday, we saw 100-per cent occupancy, which has dropped to 80 per cent today. But the numbers will pick up again from Friday.

Rajan A Rathod, Sri and Jaishri ( Vapi)

Krrish 3 is doing outstanding business at our property. It's been a very long time since a movie has done such great business in single-screens. Usually, it's all about the first weekend and it's not often that we have a film that does outstanding business in its first five days. Occupancy today is 75 per cent. Krrish 3 will enjoy a good run till next weekend.

Sandeep Tekriwal, Vijay Pictures (Gorakhpur)

We have only one screen and we are running five shows. Till yesterday, occupancy was 95 per cent and it's dropped to 85 per cent today. We had expected a huge fall in numbers but that has not happened even though it is a working day today. Tickets are all sold out for the night shows today.
