The Interview
Star interviews are a strange game played in Bollywood. It is that elusive weapon that brings a lot of entertainment journalists to their knees.

Star interviews are such a big deal that journalists covering Bollywood are ready to do anything to make an A-list star talk to them because it shows that the journalist has 'access',

The star too is aware of the importance of his interview to a journalist.

Entertainment reporting across the country sees rival media houses, journalists trying to upstage one another to get access to an A-list Bollywood star and secure an interview ahead of everybody else. The stars are aware of this race and handpick journalists very carefully through their staff.

In most cases, the journalist who will interview the star is hand-picked by their PR (media) managers who go by a standard checklist.

The check-list that a PR follows may be something like this — (a) the number of free mentions (read promotion) of the movie (sometimes the brand) that the star is promoting, the reach of the media house which the journalist is representing, the 'slot' that the journalist will be providing to the interview while airing it or printing it, the seniority of the journalist, the past record of the journalist (with the star) and lastly, whether the journalist agrees to the given conditions (it sometimes goes like 'don't ask him about his love life').

The journalists who pass through this filtering process, manage to feature on the exclusive 'media-list' of star managers and get the privilege of interviewing the star, one-on-one.

There is further prioritisation that happens again but this time it depends on the demands of the journalists concerned. Some want to be first in the line at any cost, some want an exclusive photo-shoot along with the interview, some want the star in a well-decorated set with a five-camera set-up etc.

Once all that is sorted out, the star is ready to be interviewed.

Every star has their own way of giving an interview and each of them deal with journalists very differently. The interview that you see in any media is usually the finished product and doesn't tell you the story of how the interview happened or how the star behaved during the course of the interview.

Today, I will tell you interesting anecdotes of how a star handles Bollywood journalists. To start with, I will talk about the top five male stars of Bollywood. So, here I go.

(a) Amitabh Bachchan: Amitabh Bachchan's own camera-crew is also present at every media interview. This team will usually include a still camera person and a videographer. So, at the end of the interview, both Amitabh Bachchan and the reporter will have a tape and stills of the interview. The same process is followed for Abhishek Bachchan too. There is a no way a reporter can get away if he tampers with Bachchan's words. Hence, most reporters are extremely careful when they are editing or transcribing an Amitabh Bachchan interview. Amitabh Bachchan's interview always begins and ends exactly at the time that was decided earlier. Amitabh Bachchan is always punctual to a fault and if he gives you a time of 10.30 am, it means the interview might start at 10.29 am but not at 11 am. A journalist is expected to reach the venue well ahead of the interview time.

(b) Shah Rukh Khan: Shah Rukh likes to give one-on-ones in a relaxed atmosphere. If the journalist is already charmed by him then the doors of Mannat (Shah Rukh's bungalow) will open to welcome the journalist inside.

More often than not, senior journalists get invited to his office on the second floor of Mannat Annexe (the building that is right behind the bungalow). Once you are seated in his spacious office, you will get a royal treatment from his staff because Shah Rukh is always 'yet to arrive'.

Usually, Shah Rukh will be at least one hour late from the time of the interview. But if he is just one hour late then you are lucky. I have seen him three hours behind schedule and that is not unusual for him at all. Once he arrives for the interview, you (the journalist) belong to him.

Usually, Shah Rukh will give you as much time as you require unless he is pressed by his own staff to end the interview (it happens all the time because SRK loses track of time if he is engrossed in the interview).

In all cases without exception, it will be Shah Rukh in the driving seat even if you go into the conversation with an agenda or a well-planned line of questioning.

Shah Rukh will derail all your plans with his incisive, witty and off-the-cuff answers unless you are a seasoned journalist who's well aware of Shah Rukh's ways. Very few journos can hold on to their line of questioning when Shah Rukh takes charge. Most interviews end up the way Shah Rukh wants it, in spite of journalists putting in their best efforts.

He is a very difficult person to beat when it comes to mind games during interviews.

(c) Salman Khan: He is an antonym of Shah Rukh Khan. Salman Khan doesn't know most of the journalists personally who operate in the field today. He doesn't care about who he is speaking to and how 'famous' a journalist is.

If you ask him the right questions politely, you will always get the right answers. The operative word here is 'being polite'. You cannot afford to be even be passively aggressive during a Salman Khan interview, then your interview will end in five minutes.

If Salman is in the mood or he likes the way you are dealing with him, he will tell you the whole truth and not care about the consequences. He is not known to be diplomatic or somebody who plays mind-games with you during an interview. He will say it the way he is thinking.

However, if he feels that you are there with an agenda of getting a headline or a punch-line, Salman Khan will clam up. I have seen him end an interview with just 'yes' and 'no' because he felt that the journalist is not being honest with his questions. He generally goes by his gut-feeling while giving an interview and in most cases, he doesn't care about how the journalist is perceiving his answers.

He is also usually late for his interviews but his sense of time is better than Shah Rukh.

(d) Aamir Khan: Aamir is punctual and his PR army is perhaps the most efficient in the field when it comes to handling him.

Aamir's army will make sure that he won't face any nasty surprise during the course of the interview. Most of the time, Aamir is aware of the line of questioning and in some cases, the exact questions that a journalist is going to ask him.

Even after all that, Aamir will never give a knee-jerk reaction to any question. He will let you finish the question, pause for a moment to collect his thoughts and then begin his answer. He will speak slowly and clearly. Aamir will always remain aware of the fact that every word of his is being recorded. If he feels that he has said something out-of-place, he will stop his interview and ask you to cut out the words that he has spoken. He never speaks fast and recollects his thoughts properly. Aamir is never politically incorrect unless he chooses to be and he chooses his words most carefully.

After Amitabh Bachchan, it's Aamir Khan who is most punctual.

(e) Ranbir Kapoor: Most of the times, Ranbir Kapoor is not available to the media for exclusive one-on-ones unless he is promoting something, like his film.

Though Ranbir doesn't give rehearsed answers, he gets extremely jittery if a journalist crosses the 'line' and starts asking about his love life. Because he is still not a superstar and on his way to become one, he exactly knows where he belongs in Bollywood and is aware that he is the undisputed youth icon in Bollywood today. He and his PR team handle this 'image' very carefully.

Like Shah Rukh, he also has his ways to charm journalists and usually acts charming when he is not pissed off with a journalist. Even though he has the most talked-about love life, it is almost impossible to make him talk about it. It doesn't matter if you still manage to sneak in a question. It's best to sneak in those 'love questions' towards the end of the interview because it starts making him fidgety.

Here is a viral video where Ranbir comes to Deepika Padukone's rescue when a journalist asks her an uncomfortable question during a press conference of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. Look how instantaneously he comes to her rescue and chides the journalist for the question, which even in my opinion was a foolish question to ask.

After Shah Rukh Khan, it is Ranbir Kapoor who likes to be in total control when he is sitting for one-on-ones. The one thing that separates Ranbir from all the above is his body language which is extremely relaxed in front of journalists. I have never seen him get intimidated by the press.

THE INTERVIEW 2

This is a sequel to an earlier post and today, I will talk about interviewing Bollywood's leading ladies.

There is a reason why I decided to write the last postin between the two articles based on my 'interviews'. The reason being: men and women behave very differently in Bollywood.

Bollywood heroes bother far less about the media than the heroines because they are more secure than their women colleagues. Bollywood heroines are far more cautious than the heroes. Though some of the leading women in Bollywood have managed to carve out a niche for themselves, the reality is that most leading ladies are still largely dependent on their heroes when it comes to film roles.

Not too many films are written keeping women in the lead and even if it is written, the producers are not ready to put in a lot of money. In the last five years, there have been very few films where the heroine of the film plays the main part. Even if there's a film like that, the producers are not willing to invest more than Rs 30-40 crores in it. On the other hand, any film with even a B-list hero demands that kind of money.

Sadly, there's a lot of catching up to do in Bollywood when it comes to gender equality. Yes, the situation is changing, but we are still have a long way to go. We are yet to move away from the patriarchal society that Bollywood is. If you have noticed, most of the films that we produce are patriarchal in nature.

So, naturally the heroines behave a lot of differently in front of reporters than the men in Bollywood. Every Bollywood heroine is very cautious about her body language and how she is carrying herself. Every word is spoken with utmost care and most importantly, Bollywood heroines are extremely aware of protecting their turf.

Every heroine is aware that Bollywood reporters are always looking for a headline or punchline while interviewing them and it is their love life that makes the headlines. The press generally don't want to hear anything about 'cinema' from them.

They do talk about cinema in the course of the interview but somehow every interview seems incomplete without at least one mention about the whether the actress is single, dating somebody, looking to get married and if the actress is married, then the status of her married life.

Sadly, most actresses have become so immune to these questions that they give out answers without battling an eye-lid. These answers are not rehearsed but answering the same question over and over and over again gives a certain robotic touch to it.

Just look at the face of the actress when a reporter throws in a 'personal' question. The look on her face will be like, 'Oh come on you intellectual Bollywood writer, you had to come down to this level, na? So much for the intellectual questions you had been throwing at me all this while. Now you want to know who I am sleeping with''

Well, even then every Bollywood heroine has her own way of handling the press.

There are certain unique techniques that each one of them employ while handling one-on-one interviews (where there is only one reporter sitting in front of them). So here goes a few pointers about how the top five actresses handle the press:

1. Kareena Kapoor-Khan: Kareena will never show if she is offended by a question and will always try to answer all your questions. If she really doesn't want to answer your question, she will just say, 'next question please'. This means that you have really offended her. She is otherwise sweet to most journalists and if she is comfortable with you then the interview will feel like a coffee table conversation. If Kareena is not comfortable with you, then she will be distant, aloof and very formal. The signs that Kareena is comfortable with you will show prominently on her face ' she will crack jokes, roll her eyes and laugh a lot. For some reason I feel that women journalists connect more with Kareena than the men.

2. Vidya Balan: One of the simplest human beings I have met, Vidya is very down to earth and devoid of the starry airs that is so typical to a top Bollywood actress. Vidya will trust you completely during an interview. She had had a hell of a struggle to reach where she is and it shows when she talks. Most Bollywood actresses will treat you as somebody beneath them and it will show in their attitude that they are doing a favour by talking to you. Vidya, on the other hand, will make you feel like a human being who's equally important as her. The best part about Vidya is that she will go the distance for you ' like accommodating an interview even if she is very busy because your deadline is near. Overall, one of the best subjects for an interview. You don't need any training to interview her, even a rookie can come back with a great interview of Vidya Balan.

3. Katrina Kaif: Katrina is a very difficult subject to interview because she is very formal and distant during most interviews. Even if you act pally and personal, Katrina will always be on her guard. Katrina will only answer what she has been asked. If you don't ask her the right questions, you won't get the right answers. Her answers are always to-the-point and precise. She doesn't volunteer extra information and she is not chatty either. She maintains a strict formal atmosphere in all her interviews. You need to gather some good experience in this field before you interview Katrina Kaif because otherwise you won't come back with a good interview. Chalk out at least 20 questions in your mind before you are interviewing her.

4. Priyanka Chopra: Priyanka is a very interesting person to interview because she is a mixture of Katrina Kaif and Kareena Kapoor when it comes to giving interviews. Okay, let me explain. If you are ask Priyanka about her next film, about whether she has tried deep-sea diving or how she loves being on twitter ' she will be chatty, informal, bubbly and talkative. But if you ask Priyanka about her personal life or something that she doesn't want you to ask, she's will be precise, formal and to-the-point. If you continue asking the wrong questions, the interview will end before it began. You need some training to interview Priyanka Chopra and a rookie will always come back with a disaster of an interview. If you ask Kareena or Vidya a stupid question, then you won't realise that. But with Priyanka, the moment you put forth a silly or a stupid question, you will know it instantly. If you are interviewing Priyanka, always do your homework very well.

5. Deepika Padukone: Deepika is tired of answering questions about Ranbir Kapoor! She has exhausted all her answers, trust me. She has answered questions about him so many times that she can now answer questions about Ranbir even in her sleep. So, if you want a good interview, kindly change the topic. Deepika is also very formal while giving an interview though she won't let you realise it. She will have wide smile pasted on her face while talking to you and that will give you a feeling that she is being informal. She isn't, because that's her natural attitude. It is very difficult to make her open up because her mind is always alert to the fact that she is talking to a reporter and not a friend. Deepika is courteous but will never volunteer any additional information.

So, hope the above helps other rookie journalists who will be interviewing these actresses in future.

Continuing with the debate about how Bollywood is a man's world, here's one more example of how heroines put their personal differences and tiffs aside to come together for a leading superstar. You have seen heroines dance countless number of times with Shah Rukh Khan at award functions. Here's a video when the leading ladies came together for Salman Khan at the Lakme Fashion Week in 2010. I don't re-collect too many instances like these when male superstars have come together for a heroine. Here's the video as a parting shot.

Amitabh's own crew is the best way to make sure their words aren't twisted. Kudos to the AmiThesaurus.

SRK making ppl wait is awful. Lol at Salman being antonym of SRK. Aamir is expected behavior.

Surprisingly this blog doesn't mention the famous middle finger that Ranbir shows to the media.

SRK is one the most famous late lateef in BW. He even lands up for parties at 4am. 😆Plus he is very clever with words. He says thing and you can interpret it as you want.
And Aamir I knew it. This guy ensures he is gives exams only after leaking the question paper.
