Salman's guard alone in death

MUMBAI: Ravindra Patil, former bodyguard of Salman Khan and an eyewitness in the hit-and-run case involving the actor, died on Wednesday. He was suffering from tuberculosis.

"He was suffering from extensive tuberculosis and was in a bad shape," said a doctor at the Sewri TB hospital in central Mumbai. Patil, who was abandoned by his family following his illness, was recently found on the streets near Sewri and admitted to hospital.

A police constable, Patil (30), had been assigned to protect Khan after the actor complained of underworld threats. He was with Khan on September 28, 2002, the night of the fatal accident when an allegedly drunk Khan ran his Land Cruiser over pavement dwellers sleeping outside American Express Bakery in Bandra. One person was killed and four were injured in the accident.

Soon after the accident, Patil called the police. Patil, whose evidence has already been recorded by a trial court, was among crucial witnesses in the case. However, in the midst of the trial, he went missing. Subsequently, he was arrested in March 2006 for not reporting to duty. He was sacked from the force in November 2006.

Lawyers said his death will not affect the trial since his testimony had already been recorded. His deposition and subsequent cross-examination by Salman's lawyer Dipesh Mehta would still constitute as evidence. How strong or weak the evidence is, would be for the court to decide, they said.

Patil who had given two statements to cops about the incident stood by his subsequent statement where he said he had warned the actor who was drunk to go slow and that Khan had not paid heed. In his immediate statement to the police after the incident, Patil hadn't mentioned that Salman was drunk.

A constable of 1998 batch, Patil was attached to the protection unit of the Mumbai Police before being sacked. A bachelor, he is survived by two elder brothers, both police constables ' Devendra (36) who is attached with the State Reserve Police Force in Dhule and Prakash (35) who is with Ghatkopar police station.

whatver article said may have truth in it...but i failed to understand how court ignored his request to put him in diffrent custody and protection as witness..dont say salman bribed judge too if that was the he would have won the case in that court because same court given judgement against salman...salman did same with ABP news channel who aired news abt ravinder patel and his hit and run case and salman rushed to court and brought stay order from court to stop that news and got written apology from news channel ...
