A 'small' piece on SRK

Mumbai Mirror | Aug 4, 2013, 12.44 AM IST
By: Aseem Chhabra

A profile of the actor in The Times of London puts him down without any reason or understanding of Bollywood.

Catherine Nixey doesn't know much about India, its popular culture, Bollywood films and certainly not much about Shah Rukh Khan. But yet she was sent by her newspaper - the venerable The Times of Londonto interview Khan and write a profile about the star. And she starts her 1,600 word long piece - Meet the biggest film star in the world, published last Thursday, by suggesting (and then she goes on building on this theme) that Khan is quite an arrogant person.

She tells us in the second paragraph that Khan has the habit of repeating that he is a humble man. And then she questions him why he likes to stand on the balcony of his house and wave at his fans like the Queen. Khan responds in his regular humor that his fans and the press in India are used to: "I do it. Like the king." Alas Nixey does not get that humour.

She pokes fun at the fact that there are 11 bouncers standing outside Khan's hotel in Central London, even though there are not many fans there to see the star. But in the process she shows her absolute ignorance about how Bollywood stars actually get mobbed by fans in India and in cities with large South Asian diaspora population.

She comments about Khan wearing tinted aviator glasses during the interview, as if this is a sign of his arrogance. But I wonder if she would make a similar comment if she ever interviewed Jack Nicholson or Wong Kar-wai? And she quotes Khan as saying that Harvey Weinstein once called him the "biggest film star in the world."

It should be noted that journalists and others in the west are in the habit of making such superlative statements when they cannot explain the influence and popularity of Bollywood stars. In 2002, GQ magazine called Hrithik Roshan "the most famous person in the world that you've never heard of" and in 2005 New York City's Film Society of Lincoln Center held a retrospective of Amitabh Bachchan which was titled Amitabh Bachchan: The Biggest Film Star in the World! When Aamir Khan was in the US to promote Lagaan, he was often described in the press as India's Tom Cruise. Nixey also makes it a point to say that Shah Rukh has more Twitter followers than Cruise.

Then she shows more ignorance in the piece. She has obviously not seen any film of Khan. She mentions after his breakthrough film Deewana, Khan starred "in such award-winning, multimillion-selling Bollywood box-office hits such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai." That to me sounds like something out a press release or perhaps information gathered from a Wikipedia page on Khan.

I look at some of Nixey's other pieces. I don't think she have ever written a profile of a big star -Hollywood, British or foreign. Her specialization seems to be more in area of literature, the classics and television. It is mystery why her editor assigned her to profile a big Bollywood star?

If Nixey had the knowledge she could have deciphered the language of Bollywood and of Khan's true popularity for her readers. She could have attempted to explain how the fan adulation in India affects even the humblest of human beings. But her piece is a missed opportunity for a popular Bollywood film to crossover to the general film loving audience in London.

I know Shah Rukh Khan does not need to be defended and one piece in The Times is not going make a dent on his popularity in India or among the diaspora, nor will it have any impact on the imminent success of Chennai Express. The problem with Nixey is that she has written one of the most offensive and condescending pieces and so one wonders how she comes off suggesting that Khan is arrogant?

When she first meets Khan, Nixey does not think it is inappropriate to write: "this enormous star ...is surprisingly tiny." While I am not sure about Khan's height one thing is clear - Nixey is a very small journalist.

Price Hike For Chennai Express Tickets

August 4th, 2013 by Koimoi.com Team

Chennai Express will be quite an expensive mode to travel it seems. According to reports from a leading daily, the film's prices have been hiked by 40% on weekdays and 20% on weekends.

The reports also stated that most crucial multiplexes in Mumbai are contemplating on increasing the ticket amount to even 500 Rs. Being an Eid release, it is expected that the film's cost will increase as common during festivities but the hike rate is unexpected.

Since Shah Rukh Khan has mostly got it right at the box office and so has Rohit Shetty maintained the momentum of his films at the box office, the combination of the two is dependable and multiplex owners are cashing this as the best opportunity to earn their best.

While Cinemax has decided to keep a stable 25% higher price for tickets all week, PVR is contemplating 40% maintained for weekdays. Inox has still not zeroed on their hiked amount but will obviously charge over the normal rates. Popular Mumbai based single theaters like Chandan and Gaiety will also hike the prices ofChennai Express reportedly

Chennai: Come Aug 9 and three superstars - Shah Rukh Khan, Vijay and Pawan Kalyan - from the Hindi, Tamil and Telugu film worlds - are set to battle it out at the southern box office. The outcome is likely to be phenomenal, say industry experts.

Shah Rukh-starrer 'Chennai Express', which has a heavy southern flavour, Vijay's Tamil political drama 'Thalaivaa' and Pawan Kalyan's Telugu family drama 'Attarintiki Daaredhi' are releasing on the same day.

"This is probably the first time in Indian cinema that films of superstars from different languages are going to vie for the top spot at the box office. It's tough to predict the winner because expectations are riding high on all the three films," trade analyst Trinath, told IANS.

Pawan Kalyan's 'Gabbar Singh' raked in over $1 million in the US upon release in its first week.

The tough competition will especially be tough in the overseas market, he said.

"'Chennai Express' will have a wide overseas release. I was told it's being released in countries like Morocco, Israel and even Germany, while 'Thalaivaa' and 'Attarintiki Daaredhi' will predominantly target countries such as the US, Britain and Australia," he added.

But, the first week of August will also see the release of Hollywood biggies such as Disney's 'Planes', Neill Blompamp's 'Elysium' and Thor Freudenthal's 'Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters'.

"It's going to be neck-to-neck competition for these films. 'Chennai Express' has already got maximum number of screens in most countries. Pawan Kalyan has great market in the US and his films usually have good openings here," an international distributor of Indian films, told IANS.

Trinath believes it's the box office opening that will make the difference for the three big-ticket films.

"We don't know yet the number of theatres 'Chennai Express' is being released, while 'Thalaivaa' and 'Attarintiki Daaredhi' are expected to release in over 1,000 screens worldwide individually. All the three actors are known for having blockbuster openings and therefore, that will be the deciding factor," he said.

Vijay's last release 'Thuppakki' minted Rs 65.32 crores worldwide in its first week run at the box-office. The film, which was reportedly made on a budget of Rs. 70 crore, went on to collect over Rs. 100 crore in two weeks.

Pawan Kalyan's 'Cameraman Ganga Tho Rambabu' raked in Rs 52 crore worldwide in the first week, Shah Rukh's 'Jab Tak Hain Jaan' collected a whopping Rs 120 crore in the first six days upon its release in 2012.

Meanwhile, multiplexes in Chennai have opened bulk bookings for 'Thalaivaa' and 'Chennai Express' as well.

Box Office Screen Count: Chennai Express To Release In Seven New Overseas Markets

August 4th, 2013 by Koimoi.com Team

Chennai Express will not only break the dry spell of box office but the much hyped rom-com will tread into unknown markets in the global circuits. Unfamiliar to Bollywood films, this Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer is expected to travel to seven markets including Peru, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France, Israel and Peru.

SRK's My Name is Khan and Hrithik Roshan's Guzaarish were both released in Peru but that was long after the film had already released in Indian and other circuits in the global market. This time the film will release in the unknown markets on the same day it is scheduled for a release in India.

"Shah Rukh Khan has a strong fanbase and the demand for the movie is enormous overseas. We are releasing the movie in over seven non-traditional markets and the movie will also witness a day and date release for the first time in Peru for any Hindi film," confirmed Amrita Pandey, executive director (International Distribution) Disney UTV Studious.

Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and Rohit Shetty on the sets of Chennai Express

The screen count of film hasn't been revealed so far but it is definitely going to cross 4200 on 9th August including India and overseas market.

The film will also have the biggest U.K release ever and this Rohit Shetty's directorial will be screened across 125 theatres and around 170 screens. In total overseas screens of the film will easily be over 650 which will be biggest ever for a Bollywood film. Being a SRK franchise, it is not surprising that the film is already gearing up for fanfare.

Chennai Express is going to release worldwide on 9 August on the eve of Eid.
