Foreign beauties are being lured to Indian cinema (especially Bollywood, Tollywood and Kollywood) in recent years and a few have managed to secure lead roles. For instance, British teen queen Amy Jackson made an entry as a British girl in Vijay's Madrasapattinam and went on to play a Malayali girl in the Hindi remake of Gautam Vasudev Menon's Ekk Deewana Tha.Though the movie didn't set the BO on fire, she did manage to bag a Telugu film next.

Director Lingusamy, who's set to make his directorial debut in Bollywood, explains that the import of foreign beauties for our films is just an extension of global cinema. "In Tamil cinema, we were first seeking actresses from Mumbai, now they are from aboard. Filmmakers are constantly looking for new ways to engage the audience. So if we are borrowing techniques on one side, we are also looking to sign on foreign beauties on the other," he says. So are our Indian actresses losing out on film opportunities as being claimed by some? "No," he says, "Our artists are also getting opportunities in Hollywood, isn't it? I don't think that's a fair assessment."

Take, on the other hand, Freida Pinto, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Mallika Sherawat. These are some Indian names that have made a mark in Hollywood and continue to be sought for lead roles. However, the same can't be said for many of these girls who have come to India in the hope of striking it big. Some filmmakers primarily cast them for sexy item numbers and these beauties tend to get typecast pretty soon. But tinsel town still does seem to have an obsession for fair skin.

Ask director Ram Gopal Varma about the fair skin fixation and he replies, "We are third-world brown people, who will always look up to the whites. So this is a trend that will stay."

And as to why he chose half-Indian, half-Brazlian Nathalia Kaur for his film, he says, "Nathalia is a beautiful girl who also knows how to express herself right in front of a camera. This is a rare quality and I'm glad I chanced upon a talent like her."

So while some talk about lost opportunities, many filmmakers are just looking to bring something novel to the audience with every film - even if it means for a few minutes.
