Would it be a success in India today?

I think so...and Vidya would def be a part of it and take away all the acclaim

it would def work now, and no Vidya doesnt need to be part of it. Everyone who acted in the movie, were great. It's sad that ppl didnt appreciate it back then.

Actually, I recently saw the movie and it was an absolute crapfest. Yes, the message was good but the treatment was so loud and over-the-top. The social message got hidden somewhere in the dramatics of it all and by the end of it, I just had a giant headache. Not to mention the length. The movie was more than freaking 3 hours long.

If the movie was to be released today, there is NO way it would have worked.

I liked this movie. I was in Fiji when it released and it was a huge hit there along with Tum Bin, Gadar and Chori Chori Chupke Chupke. All 4 returned into cinemas coz of public demand.

Rekha's story was upsetting, her being raped was worst part of the film. Eventually liked all the other stories from dowry story of Mahima, Pregnancy of Madhuri and cruel husband of Manisha.
