LOOKING FOR A STRONG ROLE

Simone Singh is one of the few Bollywood actresses who have a clean image in the industry. This is another thing that she is yet looking for a strong role though she has already acted in small roles in several films, including 'Ek Rishta - The Bond of Love', 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum', 'Haan.. Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya', 'Mohabbat Ho Gayee Hai Tumse', 'Sur' and 'Being Cyrus'.

In spite of all this, she is neither down nor out. She is anchoring a TV program titled 'Cosmic Chat' besides playing an important role in Shivaji Productions' 'Delhiheights'. The smashits team caught her in Delhi along with the cast of 'Delhiheights', and chatted with her.

Excerpts of her chat:

How did you get 'Delhiheights'?

I got this movie offer through its dialogue writer Samyukta. I was very pleased to know about its story and its producer. I am indeed proud of my decision to act in 'Delhiheights'.

What about your long awaited ' Kyonki Hum Deewane Hain'?

This is a triangular love story. This movie reflects the growing ambitions of the youths.

What's your role in it?

I play a model-singer and run a band titled 'We Five', along with four other colleagues. I play opposite Tarun Khanna in the movie.

Aren't you happy with the present trend in movies?

I cannot act in 'Sexy' movies even if I have a lead role in it. I want to keep my image clean, irrespective of the big or small screen. I am looking for a strong role though.

Do you have any other project on hand?

Yes, I am playing the lead role in an untitled movie being directed by Joy Augustine. This is a heart touching movie. I have high hope from it.

PERIZAAD ZORABIAN'S NO FOR LESBIAN ROLE

Perizaad Zorabian of Subhash Ghai's 'Joggers Park' fame will not play the lesbian role in US-India movie 'Kiran meets Karan' though she had consented to do it. Hence, the fate of the movie will hang until another actress is finalized for the role. Why has Perizad backtracked from the project? Perizad explains that it's purely because of her personal inhibitions to play this role. Besides, she cannot do justice to the role unless she is very enthusiastic to play this important character. "It would be unfair to the script; character as well as the director to have an actor play Kiran half-heartedly."

Luckily, US based Manan Katohora who is directing the movie says that he has no complaint against Perizaad for having second thought on doing the Kiran's role. He adds, "I know that some Bollywood films dealing with lesbianism like 'Girlfriend' have scared many actors off." Other informed media men also agree with the movie director. They say that the two Bollywood's lesbian movies - 'Girlfriend' and 'Men Not Allowed' -- had dealt with the subject of lesbianism crudely. That's why such movies discourage actors to play such roles.

MILAN TO REPEAT SANJU AS VILLAIN

Director Milan Lutharia is very much impressed with the performance of Sanjay Dutt as khalnayak (villain) in his 'Taxi 9211'. So, he has decided to repeat Sanju in this character in his next movie, starring Ajay Devgan. Though Milan had initially thought of pairing Ajay with Saif Ali Khan in this movie as he had cast Saif with Ajay in 'Kachche Dhaage', he had to replace Saif with Sanju because of the former's date problem. The story of Milan's proposed movie centers around two stars - Ajay Devgan playing the character of a brave police inspector and Sanju that of a dreaded criminal who flees from prison.

Milan says that the story is based on a true incident that had occurred in Uttar Pradesh, not in the distant past. Milan has also signed Sameera Reddy as the movie's heroine though he is yet to finalize the name of another heroine. This is another matter that Amrita Rao is being mentioned in this regard. He will decide it soon as the movie has to go on the floors next month. Milan proposes to shoot the movie in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Supermodel-turned-actor Milind Soman and his French co-star Mylene Jampanoi in the international production titled 'Valley of Flowers' are now man and wife. "Soman tied the knot with Jampanoi three days back," the movie's director Pan Nalin announced at the inauguration of the 8th Osian Cinefan film festival where the film premiered on July 15th.

The romance between the two blossomed during the filming of the Indo- French- Japanese- German production that has thespian Nasseruddin Shah in a prominent role. One of India's first malesuper models and the star of films like 16th December, Rules and Agni Varsha, 41-year-old Soman first shot to fame with his campaign for Thackersey fabrics. A national-level swimmer, Soman was briefly engaged to model Madhu Sapre with whom he had shot the controversial Tuff Shoes advertisement, which showed the couple apparently nude and wrapped with a python.

Jampanoi, who is of Chinese and French parentage, is considered by fans as the Asian version of Monica Bellucci. She has starred in films like Les Filles du Botaniste, Le Detective: Contre-enquete, Cavalcade and 36 Quai des Orfevres. The two were rumored to be courting for nearly a year now and reportedly met each other outside India every six weeks before entering wedlock.

The 8th Osian's Cine Fan Festival was opened with director Pan Nalin's 'Valley of Flowers' starring Millind Soman, Nasseruddin Shah besides foreign actress Mylene Jhampanoi and others. The movie set in the backdrop of picturesque Laddakh was witnessed by all the VIPs gathered there. The festival will showcase 120 films representing Arab, Chinese and Indian Cinema, besides having series of talent workshops. According to the organizers of festival, the main attraction will be 'The Middle Path' a section of films on Buddhism. As a tribute to noted Indian director Ritwik Ghatak, eight of his films will be screened at the festival.

Shilpa Shetty has traveled a long way in Bollywood. She is considered the fittest girl in the industry. However, she falls a prey to several controversies. Recently, her name was mentioned in a court case involving indecent exposure. No sooner she got clearance in the matter than her name has figured about her affair with director Anubhav Sinha. We caught her recently and chatted.

Excerpts of her chat:

What was the case in a Southern court against you?

The case involved indecent exposure. However, the matter regarding the case on indecent exposure has been cleared now.

What about another controversy regarding your affair with director Anubhav Sinha?

I have clarified my stand on this before. I do not want to talk about it now.

What's 'Shaadi Karke Phus Gaya Yaar' all about?

I don't like this title. I hate it rather though I am working in it. I don't understand why the men feel that way in spite of being happily married.

What's your role in this movie?

I play Ahana's character. She is someone who has been brought up with a modern outlook. The character in the film is very endearing.

Isn't the movie a comedy?

Yes, the movie is a situational comedy. These things do happen in real life, but the audience will find it comical.

What's your view of marriage?

Nowadays, women are at par with men. They are educated and their views regarding life have changed. I don't think it is wrong to be confident. I think that is why marriages are breaking these days in our country.

What about your marriage?

I believe that one should get married to the right man. I hope that I meet Mr Right some day.

What's the USP of the movie?

The USP is the unique combination of Salman and me. We share a strange chemistry on screen. Besides, there are some amazing songs in the movie, and I have many opportunities to show my dancing prowess.

How do you estimate Salman Khan?

Salman is a big star and nobody has seen him in this avatar. He is extremely cute in this film.

What are your forthcoming movies?

My forthcoming films are Anil Sharma's 'Apne' with Sunny and Bobby Deol, Dharmendra, Katrina Kaif and Kiron Kher. My other movie is Anuraag Basu's 'Metro' with Kay Kay and Shiney Ahuja.

'KANK'S PRODUCER (?) BREAKS MEMORY RECORD

Biswaroop Roy Choudhry who is busy completing his movie 'Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna', has now entered into Guinness World Records. He has made this record by successfully memorizing randomly selected fourteen names with their corresponding date of births in just two minutes and then recalling them in the order in which they were sitting. Michaela Buchvaldova, of Munich, Germany, held the earlier record. He had memorized and recalled thirteen randomly selected birth dates in two minutes. An engineer by education, Biswaroop entered the field of memory seven years back and since then his name has been a part of the Limca Book of Records as the strongest memory man of the country and the inventor of Mnemonic Pen.

After the record breaking attempt Biswaroop revealed that he was born with an ordinary memory in the college days and he was known for his forgetfullness. He read a lot of books on memory enhancement. He said that the most important principle of memory is imagination as the nerves which go from brain to eyes are 20 times stronger than the nerves which go from brain to ear.

While talking about his movie 'KANK', Biswaroop reveals that he has already filed the case against Karan Johar for naming his movie with the same title. He adds that he is still working on his movie, and is sure that the title of 'KANK" will remain with him.

Biswaroop also proclaimed at the end of his feat that if any Indian manages to break his record of his by the 15th of August 2006 he will award that person with a Honda City car. He added that he will personally reveal the techniques for his feat on the 16th of August as his primary aim is to make children aware of these scientific memory techniques so as to provide them a respite from the burden of studies.

JIMMY IS BANKING ON 'BAS EK PAL'

Jimmy Shergil is lesser known than his contemporaries despite his ten years in the industry. But he has no regret and rather feels proud that he has attained an image of a good artist if not of a star. He doesn't miss saying that the stars aren't usually good artists. His recent performance in Naseeruddin Shah's directorial debut 'Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota' has been widely appreciated. Even Naseer wonders why Jimmy hasn't become a star in spite of his being experimental in movies.

Jimmy discounts any report stating that he lacks craze among the audience. He elaborates his point by stating that he has more than eleven movies on hand. Speaking about his forthcoming movie 'Bas Ek Pal', he counters any argument that the movie is based on homosexuality. Jimmy claims that it depicts the changed human mentality in the modern age.

The smashits team met and chatted with him recently in New Delhi during the premiere of his movie, 'Bas Ek Pal' at the recently concluded Osian Film Festival. He elaborates that the story centers around five friends -Urmila Matondkar, Juhi Chawla, Sanjay Suri, Rehaan Engineer besides himself. However, a sudden and unwanted relationship enters their lives bringing a revolution. Jimmy considers 'Bas Ek Pal' as the first movie of his career as its each scene is alarming. "My role is full of shades from grey to black in this movie."

What's 'Bas Ek Pal' all about?

The movie's story is full of uncertainties. The audience will be faced with surprises with each scene taking a new turn.

What's your role in it?

I and Sanjay are childhood friends. The situation changes when we meet after a very long time. People watch us with suspicion. We go through difficult times and towards the end the life takes a strange turn and pauses there.

How do you rate your acting skill?

My talent can be measured from my forthcoming movies like 'Train' and Shyam Benegal's 'Chamki Chameli', Onir's 'Bas Ek Pal', Vidhu Vinod Chopra's 'Eklavya', Devang Dholakia's 'Khaffa' and also Rajkumar's movie, besides a Punjabi titled 'Mannat'.

Did you shift to Punjabi because of lack of Hindi offers?

No, this is not true; I have also done a Punjabi movie titled 'Yaaran Nal Baharah' of director Manmohan Singh. Since I am born in Punjab, I owe it to work in Punjabi movies. In any case, I have not shifted to regional films following failure in Hindi movies. Moreove, I do not get my dialogues dubbed.

Is 'Bas Ek Pal' based on homosexuality?

The movie is based on changed human mentality in today's world.

Which movies you think will be your best movies?

As of now, I think 'Bas Ek Pal' is my best movie besides 'Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota' and 'Yahaan'. I think that 'Eklavya' will bring a turning point in my career.

GRACY SINGH TURNS SINGER

Gracy Singh who was last noticed in Ashutosh Gowatrikar's mega Aamir Khan starrer 'Lagan' has turned a singer by now. She will sing a song in her forthcoming Inderjit's 'Chanchal'. This is not the first time when a Bollywood hero or heroine has turned singer. In the recent past, Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan too have sung songs in their movies. Recently, Priyanka Chopra has sung one in 'Bluffmaster'. She is a good singer though. Gracy clarifies that she is not a professional singer, but got trained for few days before crooning under the direction and inspiration of Kuldeep Singh.

When asked about the song, she said that this was a song for children. About her role in 'Chanchal', Gracy says that she plays a mischievous girl from who is protected by her grandmother. While she loves to dance and sing, her grandmother forces her to marry with a boy her grandmother has chosen for her. This marriage ruins her life completely. Though Gracy acted opposite Aamir Khan, Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgan initially, she did very few films later. Gracy has seven films to her credit in the last six years, and looking forward to two films this year: 'Chanchal' and director Sukhwant Dhadda's 'Choodiyan', which is a woman-oriented subject.
