Q. When did you realise that you were a pretty girl?
I didn't realise it till I was about 21. Having always been on the heavier side, it never occurred to me that I was pretty. Whenever I looked in the mirror, all I saw was a fat girl. But it never bogged me down. I was confident. My interests lay in fashion designing.
Q. When did you first feel the need to lose weight?
Before Dabangg happened. I was often told, 'You have such a pretty face why don't you lose weight?' But I was happy the way I was. Later, for health reasons, I began working out and lost weight.
Q. How difficult is it to keep away from food?
Very difficult! I am a foodie. My mother cooks so well. I don't believe in not eating. I eat my fill. Then I work out.
Q. Okay, who was your first crush?
He was my classmate, my partner. He'd constantly tease me for being fat. But for some reason I liked him. I was shy and never let my feelings show. Once he came to know I liked him, he started teasing me all the more to get me off his back.
Q. While fans love your generous form, detractors slam it...
I have faced this all my life. People have hardly referred to me by my name. They have called me moti, fatty, bhens (buffalo)… But it doesn't bother me. Five people out of a hundred calling me overweight doesn't get me less work. My weight's perfect for my age, height and body type.
Q. Where, according to you, lies your sex-appeal?
It lies in the fact that I'm so comfortable with myself. Also in my eyes I guess. (Laughs) They have been talked about, songs have been written on them… Tere mast mast do nain (Dabangg). Also, I have an expressive face which I use to my advantage.
Q. You are accused of being politically correct.
What's wrong if I am? Yes, I am today's girl. I do like being direct about things. But to some extent I am diplomatic because of the profession I am in. If I say anything out of turn, it will be sensationalised as headlines.
Q. Would you look for your father in your man?
No! I want someone without a moustache. I don't want a muchiwala.
Q. What would you want him to possess?
Your instinct will tell you whether the person is good for you or not. I'd like a person with a good sense of humour, someone taller than me and someone who can hold a conversation.
Q. What is it that you can't stand in a man?
I don't like men who show off their Rolex watches and fancy cars. I don't like materialistic men.
Q. What would be a deal breaker?
Disrespecting me in any form. Making me feel lesser than him. Cheating on me would also be disrespecting me.
Q. Would you go to the extent of keeping tabs on your partner?
I don't have the patience to keep tabs on a man. I'd confront him if I doubted his fidelity. And if he confessed to it, I'd say bye bye.
Q. Do you cry easily?
What's funny is I don't cry when I am sad. I cry when I am angry. Incompetence frustrates me.
