Has Abhishek opted out of Just Punjabi?
By MIO Team
Jul 20, 2006, 21:45

There are rumours going around in the industry that Abhishek Bachchan has opted out of Bunty Walia's 'Just Punjabi'. And the reason is that his good friend cum director Apoorva Lakhia is no more a part of the film. It's being heard that Apoorva Lakhia isn't directing the film anymore due to the differences between Bunty and him that cropped up during the making of 'Ek Ajnabee'. Bunty was too much interfering and his brother Jaspreet made the atmosphere on the sets worse. There was a lot of internal politics and backbiting and so Apoorva has decided not to work with him again. However there's no bad blood between the two as Bunty puts in, also confirming that Apoorva isn't directing the film but is not sure if Abhishek Bachchan has opted out.

At this moment Abhishek is working on films like 'Umrao Jaan', 'Dhoom 2', 'Guru', 'Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna'.

Interview : I'm climbing higher, staying inspired: Hrithik

Hrithik Roshan is scaling new heights after the success of 'Krrish' and says that if the film had flopped its impact would have been ruinous.

'I have been accepted as both Rohit, who is mentally challenged, and Krrish who is a super-hero. My picture is complete. For me it is a great compliment.

'The thought of taking on the mantle of the super-hero, especially after playing the frail and vulnerable Rohit, was intimidating. If I had failed as a super-hero, I would've had a huge fall,' Hrithik told us in an interview.

People's expectations inspire Hrithik.

'People are expecting more from me each time. It means I am climbing higher, staying evolved and inspired.

'Yes, my next super-hero film will have more of everything. I want to take that film to another level completely. This time there will be no excuses about the budget. We are going to get technical help from all over the world. We'll give the next super-hero film our best shot.'

Excerpts from the interview:

'Krrish' has turned you into a children's icon?

It is a great feeling. To have films like 'Koi... Mil Gaya' and 'Krrish' in my career is in itself a blessing. I have been accepted as both Rohit, who is mentally challenged, and Krrish, who's a super-hero.

In 'Koi... Mil Gaya' audiences connected emotionally with my character. It was almost an acceptance of the real childlike and innocent personality in us as opposed to the artifice that we all have to assume and project in society.

'Krrish', on the other hand, is all about the mystique of the perfect exterior... a perfect blend of the real and the ethereal. It's heartening to know audiences have the compassion and understanding to love the imperfect hero as much as the perfect one. And to have both of these works being appreciated is an exhilarating and humbling experience.

My picture is complete. For me it's a great compliment. The thought of taking on the mantle of the super-hero, especially after playing the frail and vulnerable Rohit was intimidating. If I had failed as a super-hero, I would've had a huge fall.

And now kids in India love you more than Superman.

That's great to know. I have always believed good films run and bad films don't. One constraint that actually worked to our advantage was the budget.

Because of lack of funds we couldn't afford computer-generated stunts for 'Krrish'. It was all done in real time by me. That is one reason why 'Krrish' is visually so appealing. It is not a cartoon.

Did you watch 'Superman Returns'?

Yes I did in Durban. I love Superman. And there can be no competition between Krrish and Superman. They both belong to the same fraternity. Having said that I must say I definitely missed Christopher Reeve in the new Superman movie. He's a very tough act to follow up. I didn't really think the new actor Brendon Routh matched up.

And you as Krrish are tough to match up in the next super-hero flick.

(Laughs) It just means my work is getting better. People are expecting more from me each time. It means I am climbing higher, staying evolved and inspired.

I like that thought. Yes, my next super-hero film will have more of everything. I want to take that film to another level completely. This time there will be no excuses about the budget. We are going to get technical help from all over the world. We'll give the next super-hero film our best shot.

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Indore has selected 'Krrish' for an international case study.

It is amazing. It just adds to the whole excitement of the success of 'Krrish'. It is a very significant acknowledgement of our efforts. I am really happy and excited. This academic endorsement is exceptional to Indian cinema. Everyone knows about dad's level of creativity. But this honour also acknowledges his unbelievable acumen as a business strategist.

He is not just a master of content but also the packaging of a movie. Filmmaking is not just about telling a good story. It is also about packaging and marketing. The IIM honour endorses all of this in 'Krrish'.

The IIM will send the case study on 'Krrish' all across the world.

I knew it'd have a reach but this kind of reach? No way! I didn't know such an honour existed for our cinema. None of our films has been academically acknowledged. This is another new record for 'Krrish'. The film has so many firsts to its credit. One more feather in the cap!

There was a story about Shah Rukh Khan being annoyed with you while shooting for Arjun Rampal's film in London together?

I don't even want to react to such baseless rumours. This is nothing but concoction. Firstly, Shah Rukh and I didn't even shoot together for Arjun's film.

The shooting was in London, and Shah Rukh was not present when I was shooting. Shah Rukh had shot three days before me. I landed in London after his shot was done. Mine was a shot with Arjun, not Shah Rukh. I just had walk through the shot. As simple as that. I gave it and went home.

Interview : Koena Mitra's take on life

Koena Mitra created a frenzy in Bollywood with racy, foot-tapping numbers like 'Ishq hai jhoota', 'Khullam khulla' and 'O saki saki re'.

Unlike other actresses, who made it big with item songs, Koena doesn't like to be labelled as an item girl and is looking for meatier roles, reports Bollywood Trade.

She was seen as a solo heroine in 'Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena' with Fardeen Khan. The film sank without a trace and she is now keeping her fingers crossed for Subhash Ghai's 'Apna Sapna Money Money'.

In this interview, she discusses her take on issues like beauty, spirituality and fitness.

Excerpts from the Interview:

What do you prefer - beauty or brains?

I'd choose both. Half the people who choose the latter only try to show how cool they are, but the fact is beauty and brains both matter a lot.

If you could change one thing about India, what would it be and why?

Traffic, I think it should move faster so that people can spend more time at work and with family of course.

What is sense of humour to you?

It's very, very important considering today's hectic lifestyle and crazy on-the-run schedules.

One thing you can't live without?

I am a gizmo person so I can't imagine life without gizmos and gadgets. Also I am very passionate about music.

Craziest or weirdest thing that you have ever done?

Well, I don't think this is weird or crazy but I have been to the gym at four in the morning. Like when I am busy shooting and I feel the need to look toned, I just can't stop exercising.

Spirituality...

Spirituality is a very relative term. It is more of a personal belief. I believe in Ma Kali and Durga. If I am in Mumbai I visit the temple every Saturday. It is like a feel good factor. Having said that, I don't think people who go to temples are more religious or something.

Last time you took a cab?

Last year in Mumbai on July 26.

Most prized possession?

My perfume collection.

What are your strengths?

My confidence, willpower, my 'never say die' attitude and family.

Your weakness?

My friends mean a lot to me, so if any of my close pals backstab me it really hurts. I give my 100 percent and it is human to expect (gratitude) so I guess that's my weakness.

Favourite food?

I drool over Bengali food, my favourite being mustard prawn curry.

Would you ever join politics?

No, I think I won't be good at it.

Your dream destination?

Anywhere but not hill stations as I start feeling dizzy.

One thing you like about Mumbai?

Mumbai is hyperactive and people are truly workaholic. That's what I love about Mumbai.

Do you believe in rebirth?

No.

What is your take on pollution?

I think pollution exists everywhere. Be it Kolkata or Mumbai, so you can't do much about it.

Most cherished moments of your childhood days?

Most definitely when my younger sister was born.

Film to Congress' rescue

The Congress Party in Uttar Pradesh is now making a 40-minute documentary to regain lost ground in the coming Assembly session. The film titled 'UP-Nama - Kya Khoya, Kya Paya' attempts to "exposes" the 15 years of the non-Congress Party rule in Uttar Pradesh. The documentary alleges that the non-Congress parties, particularly the presently ruling Samajwadi Party, have promoted casteism and communalism for electoral gains and ignored the development of the state. This film will be shown in the rural interiors of the state as soon as we get the Censor clearance because when elections actually begin, there is no time to hold film shows because candidates are busy with their own respective campaigns," says UPCC president Salman Khursheed. Besides, the UPCC will also be releasing its "final charge sheet against the Mulayam Singh government in mid-July.
SALLU ATTEMPTS AT SCRIPTWRITING

By Kaydee - Eye TV India Bureau

Tete-a-Tete

click for larger view
Salman Khan who has already traveled a long way in Bollywood is one of the very few actors whose movies are sure hits at box office. He is one and perhaps the only one who gives a hit even during his worst days as he is often involved in controversies. However, his movies break records and prove hits because of his wide following among the movie watchers. This proves Sallu's acting talent. Had he not been involved in hit and run car case or that of alleged killing of protected wild animals, he would have certainly been on top of the industry.

Even his worst critics find him quite humane and supportive. Beginning from 'Maine Pyar Kiya' to 'Shaadi Karke Phas Gaye Yaar', Salman has indeed made a history of sort. He has now ventured into scriptwriting too. The actor had a recent chat with the media and spoke frankly about his forthcoming films, his attempt at scriptwriting and the present scenario in the industry.

Excerpts of his chat with the media:

Why isn't 'Shaadi Karke Phas Gaye Yaar' being released?

click for larger view
'Shaadi Karke Phas Gaye Yaar' was announced in 2001, but its shooting took place between 2004 and 2005. Hence the delay, but the reason is simple. Neither the producer had money at the time of launch nor later for its promotion. Besides, I was faced with problems. So, distributors were not ready to undertake the risk with their investments.

What's the status now?

Now, these distributors have seen the film, and are ready to buy and promote it. The movie will release soon.

Are you sure that the movie will stand its ground even after four years?

Yes, I am very confident about its prospects. Though the film has been delayed, the plot will never fail. I may add that Ekta Kapoor is going to make money with this movie.

What's 'Shaadi Karke Phas Gaye Yaar' about?

click for larger view
It is about cultural differences between a husband and wife. I am married to Shilpa who is a model and totally Western in her approach towards life. On the other hand, I am completely Indian. Shilpa is under the influence of her mother.

Would you elaborate the differences between you and Shilpa?

click for larger view
The film is about human relationships. The boy is simple and doesn't like a few things. However, the girl is adamant. She wears skirts that are above her knees and also blouses that are revealing. So, they quarrel with each other, but finally the girl realizes her folly, and comes to sense.

Isn't it a comedy? Have you shifted to this genre of films?

'Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya Yaar' is not a comedy. But the situations in the movie are comic. You may recall that my films have emotion, action and comedy. So, they can be watched by all, irrespective of one's age. This is a family entertainer.

How come Indian movies are faring well in overseas markets?

Yes, the overseas market is doing very well for Bollywood movies now. Hence, the producers should avail this opportunity.

Are you serious about writing scripts?

Yes, I am attempting to write now, but that will take some time. I had written the story of 'Chandramukhi'. Well, I think 10 years ahead.

WILL SHILPA GO WITH ANUBHAV IN 'AIRPORT' TOO?

By S. Kumar - Eye TV India Bureau

In the News

Anubhav Sinha is very much satisfied with his last two movies - 'Tathastu' and 'Dus' though the former didn't fare too well but was widely acclaimed by the viewers as well as the critics. 'Dus' proved a hit, and has encouraged Sinha to venture into another project titled 'Airport'. According to sources close to him, the two Hollywood movies - 'Airforce - One' and 'Passenger' have inspired him to make 'Airport'. Though Sinha wanted to complete 'Airport' before 'Dus', he couldn't do it due to reasons beyond his control. Now, he is determined to go ahead with his mega project with the help of K.Sera Sera. As the title indicates the shooting locales would be foreign countries.

Sinha has therefore been to Singapore and Malaysia. The cast comprising Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Arjun Rampal, Sunny and Bobby Deol has already been signed. Sinha is trying his best to rope in Amitabh Bachchan though the latter hasn't yet accepted the offer. Sinha regrets that he has been so far failing in fulfilling his cherished desire to work with Big B in his movie. Yes, he is yet to name a heroine too. Who else than Shilpa Shetty who fitted the bill in his last 'Dus'? Shilpa will go along with Anubhav to 'Airport' is everybody's guess.
MEERA TOO PROUD OF BEAUTY, YOUTH

By S. Gupta - Eye TV India Bureau

In the News

click for larger view
Pakistani actress Meera who claims to have acted in more than 35 movies in her country has starred in India's top filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt's 'Nazar' and Rajeev Babbar's 'Kasak' is very too proud of her beauty and youth. In a recent talk with a daily newspaper, Meera has declared herself to be prettier and younger than India's top actresses - Rani Mukherjee and Preity Zinta. "I possess a nicer face and am more photogenic." Amazingly, she complains against Bollywood for the latter's treatment towards her in spite of being noted filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt's favorite actress. She will soon be seen in another Bhatt camp movie titled 'Akelapan' in a prominent role. It is wondered if she will be able to win more friends in India in the wake of her criticism of Bollywood. But, the Pakistani actress is in a fighting mood and is confident of turning out the top most actress of Bollywood. In this context, she says she is only 24 whereas Indian actresses are by and large 30 years old. So, she has more scope than her Indian contemporary actresses to show her talent in the times to come.

Regarding the controversy over 'Rocking Meera', she says that she would not allow any director to make a movie on her life. However, she would welcome if Mahesh Bhatt attempts a movie on her life. In any case, Javed Sidiqui is writing a script for a movie on her life, and Meera wishes to rope in Emraan Hashmi, Abhishek Bachchan and Ashmit Patel for the main roles.

click for larger view
Meera denies that she had 'fled' from Bollywood. She asserts that she had gone to London for shooting of Lux ad and then to Australia. She has been to Pakistan too for shooting of Iqbal Kashmiri's 'Chandramukhi'. She adds that she will soon be busy in Bollywood movies like Nerraj Sahai's 'Simran' and a Feroz Khan's much coveted 'Qurbani'. However, her country has warned her against acting in Feroz Khan's 'Qurbani', presumably because of a tiff between Feroz Khan and Pak authorities during the former's recent visit to Pakistan for releasing Indian movies like 'Akbar Khan's 'Taj Mahal' and K.Asif's 'Mughal-E-Azam' in its color version . However, Akbar Khan, maker of 'Taj Mahal' who recently released it in Pakistan as a special case, may persuade Pak authorities to allow her to work with Feroz in 'Qurbani', she feels.
