Post late 80's, it's got to be SRK and Akshay in the men because they are self-made.

Before them, I guess Amitabh Bachchan (though he comes from quite an illustrious family), Dharmendra, Mithun Chakraborty ...ie the self-made folks. Sridevi, Madhuri were also self-made no?

Amongst the women, it's gotta be Vidya today. From being considered a bad luck charm to being written off to 4 back-to-back best actress awards + a National Award and being considered the flag-bearer of hit female-centric films with strong scripts in the current era. It's been quite a journey for her! On top of that, she is neither a fashionista, the "ideal weight" by Bollywood standards, supposedly "conventionally good looking" by BW standards..(I personally find her absolutely gorgeous), young, nor has she needed the top stars to help her get where she has. Just pure dedication, talent, intelligence, and some luck 👍🏼 ...if you read her current interviews, she's just a very secure woman in this big insecure world. Rare.

Anyway, salman and srk's journey inspires me. Srk because he was a nobody, had no connections and he became the KING and held that position for a very long time. That's pretty impressing. And salman, his i dont care attitude got him where he is today.He didn't let failure scare him or stop him and i love that about him. He was always himself and did whatever he wanted to do.

Vidya Balan for sure. If she came out on the streets she would be like any other lady of her age. Unlike SRK she wasnt brilliant in school/college...or unlike Akshay extremely good looking. She started out as a small time TV actor...managed to get a few good breaks here and there. Had her share of struggles till she was noticed in Parineeta. Even after that she faced criticism about her looks and went thru a bad phase. But she was able to turn that to her advantage and use it to grow as a performer.
