I did see the movie and maybe in YOUR world it has become a cult film but in no way is it on the same level as Andaz Apna Apna.

I loved Aaja nachle, it would have been at least a semi-hit if it was released now. In last two years, the whole game has changed in bollywood. People are starting to appreciate good movies, So if gulabo gang is made well..it will work and if not, then it wont. It's as simple as that.

It was slightly ahead of its times in the sense that it was purely a female-driven affair. It was just a simple, feel good, entertaining movie. The story is the classic case of the underdog taking on the big guys and coming out successful with it's fair share of cinematic liberties, nothing too clever or "new." In that sense, it's very much like Chak De India, which was also written by Sahni and came out the same year. Only in AN, the issue was art, and entertainment losing out in the bid for globalization rather than women's sports though, I do think CDI was a better product overall.

Plus, I think people just expected too much because it was THE Madhuri Dixit's comeback..like they just expected something totally out of the world types, hard-hitting and stuff. But a female centric film doesn't have to be hardhitting only. It can be just a simple, heartwarming affair. The songs were wonderful and so was the dancing. Madhuri and supporting cast like Koko, Kunal, Akshaye were pretty good too. Madhuri's Diya was a strong character. A free spirited independent woman who followed her heart and lived life without regrets, even though everyone tried to make her feel like she had sinned.

AN wasnt that terrible.
And anyways I guess Mads is hoping to be critically appreciated for both her comeback movies so yes maybe she is hoping for a EV like success.
