Lauren Gottlieb to do a Bollywood film

Tushar Joshi, TNN Mar 21, 2012, 12.00AM IST

The US winner of So You Think You Can Dance will do an Indian film

She's won the hearts of America with her dancing abilities, now Lauren Gottlieb the winner of the reality show So You Think You Can Dance is in India to make her debut in Bollywood. Directed by Remo D'Souza, she will be seen doing Indian as well as contemporary dance form. Here are excerpts from a chat.

What brings you to India? I came here to Mumbai to play the lead female role in Remo D'Souza's movie, ABCD (AnyBody Can Dance). I am thrilled and honoured to be here and excited to be a part of India's first ever 3D dance film.

Have you watched any Bollywood dance movies, your thoughts on it? I did my fair share of research before coming out here; and since being in the city, I really see how Bollywood films are infused into the culture of Mumbai. A few of my favorite films are The Dirty Picture and 3 Idiots. The acting is superb.

What's your role in ABCD like? I play a girl named Rhea, whose a very talented and determined dancer but dancing for all the wrong reasons. Throughout the film she breaks free from the pressures of what everyone else wants and expects from her and finds her own passion and love of dance. Along the way her teachers and fellow dancers help guide her through this transformation.

Why do you think a hardcore dance film like Step Up hasn't been made in India yet Bollywood has so much to offer as is, so to make a hardcore urban dance film like Step Up, it just adds another layer onto the industry. It's great for the dance community and for Bollywood that a film like ABCD is being made in India.

What's the influence of Indian dance form abroad? I've come to find out Bollywood is a mix of every style. It's so impressive to watch a Bollywood routine and find influences of hip hop, jazz, salsa, jive and tango (just to name a few) along with the signature Bollywood style. I can tell the dancers and choreographers have done their homework and use influences from dance styles all over the world to incorporate into their dance vocabulary.

Are you learning any particular Indian dance style? I'm having so much fun learning steps from different Indian classical dances like Bharatnatyam and Kathak as well as the more westernised Bollywood dancing that we are doing in the film. On set we are having fun trading moves. I'll give them a step we do in the States in return for a Bollywood step!

I remember this girl from "So You Think You Can Dance"

She's pretty, has a hot body and can dance her ass off. Too bad she doesn't have the luxury of being anonymous enough to come up with a story about being half indian or she could have made it big. So what if she doesn't know hindi, she has 10 years to get it just below competent. I'm rooting for ya girly 👍🏼

Haha, even backup dancers are mostly foreigners these days. Same ppl that use to laugh n mock all this are now praising and trying to enter n rule bollywood n get rich n famous. Acting? Why act when u can just look good n shake body.

I dont have anything against white ppl in bollywood, but they shud act n make effort to blend in properly.

😆

Lauren seems to be talented unlike some other firangi who are there just for their looks. So i'd have to disagree with you here. I hope she picks up hindi in a shorter span than 10 years.

If she does learn to act even remotely, it'd be a pleasant surprise. She's a good dancer and if she sticks around bollywood, she'd be the best dancer here. She seems to want to learn, she even knows her hindi movies and named DP and 3 Idiot as one of her favourite bollywood movies. She go into the route of naming the stardard Devdas or Kuch Kuch Hota Hai which I find most non-Indians who don't watch Bollywood lists as familiar.

Here's a clip of her dancing hip hop:

^ she made it to top 6 I think so she can't be that bad. I liked some of her performances but she got the short end of the stick with choreographers.

if she can act and learn hindi properly, i think she'll be ok. but her name is bit unusual for bollywood. plus how will she remain in public sight on her own. she doesn't have the luxury of having a superstar boyfriend whom she can tail everywhere.

look at kalki, atleast she's trying to learn hindi and tries to speak in hindi in interviews too.
