Q. What's in your heart right now?
Cocktail actually... It's a feeling I can't explain. Sometimes you wish for something and when that wish comes true, you feel good. And that drives you to work even harder and do better.
Q. Cocktail was a huge hit and most people attribute its success to you'
When I hear that I'm reminded of the time people told me not to do the film. People would ask which will be my next release and when I'd say Cocktail with Homi Adajania they'd ask why are you doing a film with Homi. He made Being Cyrus. He doesn't understand commercial cinema. There are two heroines in the film, you don't even end up with the guy. But there was something about the script. I remember standing by it through everything that it underwent. Homi came on board much later, so did Saif Ali Khan and Diana Penty. The only ones who believed in the film from day one were producer Dinesh (Vijan) and I.
Q. How tough was it to play Veronica?
Homi gave me the confidence. Every day after pack up, he'd pat me and say babe you did well today. That would give me that extra boost to do more. I surrendered myself to the part. I told myself that I could not hold back, I could not have inhibitions. I had to trust my cinematographer, my director, my producer and my costars. I enjoyed being Veronica so much it took me a long time to get out of the character. I had withdrawal symptoms. I missed being Veronica. It's Homi who brought out the layers in my performance.
Q. Has Cocktail taken you up several notches as an actor?
People have realised that this girl is not just about looking glamorous, she can act too. That makes me happy. I'm not happy just being part of a successful movie. I have to be creatively satisfied. I should feel that this film is a success because even I have done something for it. I'm glad that Cocktail finally did that. I've learnt that if you believe in your choices, the results will come.
Q. There were talks that you didn't share good vibes with Diana Penty. True?
Not at all. By nature, she is quiet and shy. Besides, this was her first film. So I guess she was focusing on what she had to do. She would keep to herself which I understand and respect.
Q. Now, you've started replacing other actresses in movies. Recently, you replaced Kareena Kapoor in Ram Leela.
What's meant to be is meant to be. Things happen for a reason. It came my way and I'm glad it worked out. I've always wanted to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. It's every actor's dream.
Q. A lot has been said about the Kareena-Deepika animosity. Can you explain?
There's never been any issue between us for the media to keep writing about and to keep bringing it up. Personally, I've never had any issue with her. So when I'm asked this, I don't understand where it's coming from or why.
Q. Will you date an actor again?
I don't know. How I can say? Never say never. But it's not about whether he's an actor or what that person does. What matters is what that person is made of.
Q. What was it like working with Ranbir Kapoor in Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani? Was there any awkwardness?
It was a blast. We were three friends hanging out, we've known one another for so long now. I've known Ayan Mukerji since the time Ranbir and he were making Wake Up Sid. So there was so much familiarity working with him and Ranbir. The only thing new was that I was working with Ayan for the first time. There was no awkwardness. Ayan knows us so well, he wouldn't have cast us if he'd thought we'd be awkward with each other. That would have been a huge risk to take. Ranbir and I would keep saying that irrespective of what we've gone through personally, we'd never let it affect us professionally. No one wanted to take that chance earlier. Only someone like Ayan who knows us so well could have brought us together. Hopefully, we will get a lot more opportunities now.
Q. There were talks that Ranbir and you are getting back together.
This speculation is bound to happen considering the relationship we've shared in the past. I guess we're both young and at an age when relationships happen. But no, that's not happening. We've found a different kind of friendship and a different kind of fondness for each other, which was absent when we were dating. We were naive back then, we're more mature today. I'm happy in the place the friendship is now. And I don't want to complicate it.
Q. Are you over him?
Yes I think so. How would I have worked with him, otherwise? I'm still fond of him. I still care about him a lot. But I guess sometimes some things are just not meant to be. And you accept that. You can't force it. And I'm happy. I accept it for what it is. I'm fond of him and he is of me. What I shared with him, I won't with anyone else. I know the same goes for him. We'll always be there for each other.
Q. The buzz is that something is brewing between Ranveer Singh and you.

We're both young and at an age where we will get linked to someone or the other every second day. We were made to spend a lot of time together because of our workshops for Ram Leela. We actually had no life in those 20 days. We were in each other's faces so this speculation is bound to happen. Having said that, let me add that he has great energy and is a fun and entertaining person to be around.
