MUMBAI, India (AP) - Akshay Kumar says he has been through several highs and lows in more than a decade in the Indian film industry.
Kumar started out as an action hero 15 years ago, but always wanted to break away from the stereotype. He recently starred in three hit comedies and says he dislikes being restricted to a specific genre.
"It's been 15 years in tinsel-town," he told the Hindustan Times newspaper in an interview published Tuesday. "I would call it a roller coaster ride and not just a journey."
Kumar recalled when he was starting out, someone commented after an audition that he would only do action movies since he had "no acting prowess."
"That got me thinking. I decided not to be predictable and labelled just as an action actor," he said. "And besides, I don't like to be labelled. You know why? Only products are supposed to be labelled. And I'm not a product on a shelf."
Kumar, a martial arts expert, has acted in more than 70 movies. His string of successes include Phir Hera Pheri (Some More Hustling), Awara Paagal Deewana (Vagabond Mad Crazy) and Garam Masala (Hot Spice).
