Blooper about Barfi

I recently watched the movie and found it amazing. My question would be how can Barfi read lips when he was deaf and dumb from birth. He was never educated with words because it showed he couldn't read or write. So how could he read lips? Is that supposed to be a blooper? It didn't make any sense to me. Don't get me wrong, as I said I loved the movie and ranbir was amazing. Or maybe I missed something.
And if such a mistake is made, how can it be nominated for oscars?

I think Barfi could always read, just not write (until Jhilmil taught him). He can read the letter the Inspector shows him in jail also.

All I know is that he's was adorable as Barfi! Very sweet acting, and a powerful one. It's kinda sad his father thinks poorly of him as an actor.

But how can one read when they cannot write? If he could read properly then when jhilmil wrote B the wrong way, he should have corrected it.

@CoCoa_19: To read you need to be able to recognize letters, and to write you need to be able to mentally reproduce them... I can recognize hindi letters well enough to be able to read in hindi, but can't write.
