September 07, 2012, (Sawfnews.com) - Ranveer Singh, who starts shooting for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Ram Leela today, says despite being disappointed over losing an opportunity to work with Kareena Kapoor who was dropped from the film, he is thrilled to be paired with Kareena's replacement Deepika Padukone.
Ranveer acknowledges that Deepika's coming on board probably works better for the film because Deepika is younger and his pairing with her would be more acceptable to audiences, as compared to his pairing with Kareena who is older than him in age.
Deepika also looks more like the Gujarati Juliet character that she plays in the film. Tall, slim and dusky, she is every bit the girl Bhansali and he would come across flipping through the many coffee table books, says Ranveer.
"Deepika is more or less my age and a younger pair in a love story works. She is like this ethereal beauty standing next to a roguish looking guy. I think we make a very good pair. Ours is a chemistry to look forward to," Ranveer, who has a full-on bearded look in the film, told Mumbai Mirror .
As to the lost opportunity to work with Kareena, Ranveer says, "But I hope to work with her. Yeh wali nahi to next time something will come along."
Ranveer says getting the Ram Leela role was much easier than bagging his debut role, but only because Bhansali knew precisely what he wanted.
Ranveer's ability to pick up accents easily, as was evident in Band Baaja Baaraat in which he plays a Delhi-Haryana boy; and his dancing skills helped him bag the Bhansali film.
But it's been a tough grind since he signed on. He had to undergo rigorous workshop to pick up the Gujarati-Hindi accent and learn specific dance moves.
"He is not a director who is easily pleased. He wants you to push more and more… till he gets what he wants. Woh aasani se nahi mannte."
Ranveer is looking forward to the payoffs of working with Bhansail.
"He (Bhansali) said he wants to make me look like a heartthrob. He said he wanted girls to go crazy when they saw me in Ram Leela!"
