Saif Ali Khan has claimed that Deepika Padukone's character in Cocktail is the wildest character in Indian cinema ever.
The actor was in London for a press conference for the film, which also stars debutante Diana Penty.
Speaking to Digital Spy, the Agent Vinod star said: "Deepika plays probably the wildest character we've ever had in Indian cinema for a mainstream actress ever. I don't know if we have shown her taking drugs, but we have certainly implied it.
"So she's a disturbed girl who finds escape and solace in partying with quite a wild bunch of people and that's a departure from the norm, but it's also quite normal in today's time. I'm a parent and you see our kids growing up. Teenagers today are living a pretty fast life in India as well."
Describing the character of Meera, played by Penty, Khan said: "Meera is the other extreme. A sedate, kind of perfect bride. A devotional, placid, traditional Indian girl. So it's the mixture of those two with Gautam, this naughty boy, that leads to a lot of the drama.
"The good thing is that the characters start off in a place where a lot of personal growth happens so they grow into something much more developed and are capable of sacrificing much more than they were at the beginning."
Khan explained why former model Penty was cast in the role, attributing it to her "simplicity."
"There's a very disarming kind of innocence she brings to the role and at the same time without being boring, because it threatens to be a very boring part," he added. "With her personality she manages to make it quote fun."
The actor also explained why fiance Kareena Kapoor was not considered for one of the roles, saying: "I'm afraid we don't have the luxury of thinking like that. She often tells me that she's never worked with what she thinks is the real Saif on screen.
"She's worked with the guy who wanted to diffuse nuclear bombs on screen in Kurbaan and Agent Vinod, and she finds this more entertaining and wishes she had done something like this.
"But I thought Agent Vinod [was] the film to make, and also I think our pairing on screen is somewhat doomed because of our off-screen relationship. So I've kind of lost out on working with a great actress."
Described as a film about friendship loyalty and love, Khan explained why he thinks audiences will enjoy Cocktail.
"It's a well made movie and people look for entertainment and we try and give that," he said. "I think they would like to watch something that makes them happy and promises to entertain and distract them for a while. That's what a movie should do."
