The President in a parliamentary democracy is the titular head. An Indian President is akin to the Queen in England. Supreme in title, but the legislator powers are with the parliament. Of course the President is not royalty and God does not save him/her. Their role is not to just sleep though. The President does have diplomatic, social and cultural duties. The President visits nations and builds such ties. The President hosts diplomats, foreign expatriates for cultural, social events. They are a spokesperson and representative of India in many events.

Pratibha Patil is a poor President because she was not astute at these roles of the President. She is sort of a misfit. Abdul Kalam however, was a very well spoken intellectual. His interactions, speeches, hosting gained a lot of goodwill and credibility for India. His humble approach thawed tensions with the west during India's nuclear testing. A good President can grease the wheels and foster socio-cultural ties that elected officials cannot do due to party politics and bureaucracy.

coming to Amitabh, his health can be seen by many people...if he becomes the president then half of his visits shall be to the hospital than to the president office..please spare the horror.
