More trouble for Fanaa |
In Gujarat, its political muscle, which has stopped the release of the Aamir Khan, Kajol starrer Fanaa but around the country viewers wont be able to see it at any of the big multiplexes either. The reason for this is the hard financial bargaining by both the producers - Yashraj films, who want a larger share of the profits and multiplexes, who say no. According to industry sources, multiplexes give 50 per cent of the profits to the producers while Yashraj Films want a larger share around 60 per cent of the profits. "We have not asked the theatre owners to increase ticket prices. We are just asking for some profits. What's wrong with it? We are giving them the best quality films," said Kunal Kohli, Director, Fanaa. Tough stand Yashraj Films argue that they want more profit because their films make more money for multiplexes. But multiplex owners say that Yashraj is asking for too much. It's a tough stand given the Yashraj success rate - past and future. The multiplexes are on a backfoot because it's not just Fanaa at stake. Yashraj Films has the distribution rights of the four biggest releases of the year - Karan Johar's Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Rakesh Roshan's Krrish and in house productions Dhoom II and Kabul Express. Approximately, Rs 200 crore profit projections ride on these films. But the multiplex owners also have on their side screening power in big cities. This is why everyone is trying hard to break the deadlock. No one knows if the last-minute diplomacy will work. But, as of now, the only ones smiling are single screen cinema owners. |
