Anupam Kher

After Bariwali and Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara, Anupam Kher is ready to produce his third venture which has been titled Hindu - An Outsider. Ashok Pandit who directed Sheen (2004), will direct the film.

What it's about

The film revolves around a man who goes back to his hometown Kashmir and finds that he feels as if he is in a foreign land. Kher will play the main character, while the balance cast is still being decided.

'I know how they feel'

When contacted in Hyderabad where he's shooting for Ramoji Rao's Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, Kher told hitList, "I quite identify with the central character because my grandparents, uncles and aunts have been uprooted from Kashmir. I know what they have undergone and exactly what they feel."

Says Pandit, "It's a father and son story. The father goes back to Kashmir and is shell-shocked to see the changes. We have a few names in mind for the son's role, but it's quite early in the day to talk about it."

Kher, whose Bariwali fetched his wife Kiron a National Award, added, "Pandit and I go back a long way. We both feel very strongly about the subject." Pandit chipped in, "While I was acting in Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara where I played a small role, we discussed this subject and Kher showed a lot of enthusiasm."

The script is in the final stages and is being readied by Raman Kumar, Priyanka Ghatak and Ashok Pandit. Shooting commences in August.

Ashok Pandit's debut directorial Sheen was based on the exodus of ethnic Kashmiri Pandit community from Kashmir. Pandit is also a noted social and political activist.

He has been highlighting the plight of the ethnic minorities through his documentaries and films.

His documentary film titled And The World Remained Silent was screened at the House of Commons in the UK in December 2001.
