Excerpts from the Interview: You're such talented. But why doesn't one hear you more often? Actually I'm not a typical playback singer. Rather than giving top preference to signing, I like to be more of an individual giving live performances. In short I'm not just a singer but also a composer rolled in one. Whenever I've sung I've liked to render my own compositions. This is what you see very much in 'Zinda'. You're one of a kind female singer in the country who composes and sings at the same time. In our country we don't see many women often taking the plunge to write music. But in the west, people irrespective of their sex prefer to write and sing their own compositions. Even music bands follow the same principle. Is it so because men are better composers than women? I don't think so and neither agree to that. The music industry is not biased towards gender and everybody gets equal preference here. So what is the reason we don't see many women composers in our country? I really don't know why we don't have more female composers. I think that the singers think that they're best in singing or would rather prefer singing than composing. It is not a criterion that all singers have to be composers. As of me, I like singing and composing because it is my way and I like it this way. If you get to sing somebody else's compositions won't you go for it? Why not! I'm open and ready to sing for others too. What is the best song you've heard in Bollywood in the recent time? Vishal Shekhar's 'Right Here Right Now'. I die for the track and wish I could sing it. Who is the one actress on Bollywood for whom you would like to playback? I think the tonal of Rani Mukherjee and mine are similar. So I would like to sing for her.
Very much! Singers are no less than celebrities now. So they've to groom themselves to look good always. They're associated with films now and have to appeal to the people. Sometime back the credit of a song would go to the actors, now the singers get individual recognitions. Singers also appear continually on television and music videos. Also there are live performances that lay preference on presentation. What would you like to tell to the aspiring singers? Give stress on your individuality and work out your own style rather than emulating somebody else and sounding like him or her. Make yourself sound unique! |
