What has made Mausam special apart from the fact that it's your dad Pankaj Kapur's directorial debut?
Mausam has been a journey. For my father it started four years ago and for me two. I took a break and everyone said I was making a mistake. Today I couldn't be happier. No one can predict its fate. But I'm proud of it. When your father is making a film, you're involved at every level. It's been a journey with lot of ups and downs.
Did you scrutinise your father's script the way you do other scripts?
Honestly, I wouldn't have done the film if I didn't believe in the script. Even though dad had written it and he understands more about films than I do, I still needed to have certain excitement. I judged the film at a professional level.
What about the reported trouble between Sonam Kapoor and you?
(Laughs) Yaar, I don't know where this is coming from. I find it very stupid to clarify such rumours because I get along with most people.
You've said no's more often than yes to people.
Actually I didn't say no to Rockstar. Imtiaz had narrated Rockstar and Jab We Met. I chose to do Jab We Met because I felt it was a better film for me. Imtiaz is a fabulous director. I'm sure Rockstar will be a good film.
You haven't been signing as many films as Imran Khan and Ranbir Kapoor.
I'm dying to sign more films. I'd ideally be happy doing three films a year.
Is there more competition now with so many newcomers like Ranveer Singh, Prateik, Ali Zafar…
Two years back I was asked the same question regarding Ranbir and Imran. Ab woh dono veteran ho gaye. Ab aur naye naam aagaye hain. Anyone who makes a good film is competition. Also no one is competition if you do good work. But it's great to see good work and feel inspired.
Were people surprised to receive your invite considering you don't throw parties often?
I don't know. They all looked pretty happy though. Actually people think because I'm a vegetarian and don't drink, they think chai peeni padegi aur rajma chawal khilayga. But when they realised I was serving good food, alcohol and great music they were pleasantly surprised.
There seems to be someone special in your life right now.
Who has given you this information? (Laughs) Apart from Kaiser my dog, no one knows whether there's someone in my life or not. I'm single right now.
Okay so what's the best thing about being single?
Initially, I hated being single because I was always used to being in a relationship. But in the last few months I've learnt to enjoy it.
Apparently, you sent flowers to Sonam recently.
Poor thing, she was down with typhoid. I just sent her some flowers and books. What should I send her? I'm far away from dating her, in case you are speculating that.
How easy or difficult is it to work with your ex?
Are you referring to anyone in particular?
No.
Well, it has its ups and downs. When you know someone for a while there's a certain comfort, respect and regard. At the same time it's not just professional.
How do you manage the chemistry?
That's never been a problem with me. I can romance anything on screen.
Speaking of your film with Kunal Kohli, how is it working with Priyanka Chopra?
I've always had fun working with Priyanka. In Kaminey we had just eight scenes together. But people liked us. While doing Kunal's film, I've rediscovered how much I enjoy working with an actor like her. I'm so glad we're finally doing a love story.
What went wrong between you and Priyanka?
What makes you think that anything went wrong? It's all good between us.
There've been reports of your breakup with her…
First it was assumed we were seeing each other. Then it was assumed that we broke up. Do I need to say any more?
At what age do you see yourself settling down?
I had already seen myself settling down a few years back. But now I'm reassessing it. This time I won't be so easy to pin down.
Would you tattoo her name on yourself?
I wouldn't tattoo my girl's name just to prove that I love her. It's personal. Different things work for different people.
Your mother Neelima Azim hails from a family of poets. Do you have a poetic streak too?
Only when I try to pataao (woo) a girl, I try cheap and tacky poetry. Trust me, I could get very cheesy.
Who is sexy – Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka or Sonam?
(Laughs uncontrollably) I can't answer this question.
