Having watched the films that released this month, I can't help but wonder if someone passed around an industry memo deeming July male stripper month in Bollywood.
I know it's summer but -- the four movies in this recap contain about eight hours of footage of men in various stages of undress, with little to absolutely no reason to show for it.
This includes everyone from a frighteningly tanned Hrithik Roshan, to a 42-year-old Ajay Devgn, to a group of 10-year-old boys in their tighty-whities.
'Murder 2'
How do I even begin to review the cinematic behemoth that is "Murder 2"?
For one thing, it stars actor Emraan Hashmi donning a wet mop for a wig, with a story copied from a random foreign language film and posters copied from other random foreign language films.
Yes, as far as winning cut paste combinations go, I think we have the granddaddy of them all right here.
Epitomized in the following sequence.
'Chillar Party'
"Chillar Party" ("Kiddy Gang") is a story about a bunch of lovable young children fighting to save their beloved pet from a stray-dog elimination drive taken up by a local politician.
Ignoring the fact that an important public servant is devoting all his time and energy on getting rid of one dog, "Chillar Party" is actually a heart-warming tale of friendship and camaraderie.
Or at least it was meant to be when it started out.
The solution the kids finally come up with to solve their problem isn't so much heart-warming as it is ... well, creepy.
'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara'
"Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara" ("You Only Live Once") is the story of three guy friends who find themselves on a road trip.
Now, an essential rule to these character-driven movies is that you have to feel for the people on screen while they're going through their emotional epiphanies.
Of course, it's hard to do that when the characters are super rich, have problems high-school kids would scoff at and are going through their emotional breakthroughs while getting tanned on a three-week vacation in the poshest villas and beaches of Spain.
Tough life.
'Singham'
"Singham" ("The Lion") is the latest in a line of hit South Indian movies being remade for Bollywood.
This story of a cop trying to take down a dreaded gangster has all the makings of an action-packed thriller.
That is, until the actual game of one-upmanship begins and this "dreaded" gangster puts into motion his plan to drive our honest cop to suicide.
How does he do this, you ask? Oh, most epically. Read on.
