This question has been bugging me for a long time...well since Natalie portman won the best actress at the Oscars. Is the Oscars Really better than Filmfare?

Back to Natalie Portman...So I have watched Black Swan...and didn't think her performance was an Oscar worthy. 😕

There are seems to be a lot of controversies around if she deserves it or not. Even the fact that some of the performances she has done in the film was a body double. 😕

Here is an article I found online:

Great Oscar debate: Is Natalie Portman overrated?

Was she too frigid in "Black Swan"? Who should really win best actress? Salon's critics discuss

Andrew O'Hehir and Matt Zoller Seitz

Here is a comment I find interesting:

What I've concluded from watching the Oscars is that it's an event that honors the industry. The voters choose people who best represent the industry. That's why the Academy tends to favor big films over small ones.

Only critics have the luxury of choosing the best "performance."

The question comes down to which actress best represents her industry.

BTW, I thought Portman was terrific along with Clive Owen in "Closer."

To bring it back to Bollywood
: So if Natile Portman can win an oscar, can actress like Kareena, PC, and Vidya win one too? I mean if you watch Natalie portman performance in Black Swan, she has not done nothing greater than what these actress have already done. I think Kareena in Chameli, PC in Aitraaz, and Vidya in Ishqia are way better performances than what Natile did in Black Swan.

Natalie Portman not deserving an Oscar is sort of your personal opinion. Respect that. Having said that, her performance in Black Swan is way ahead of comparison to our contemporary Bollywood actresses. With due respect to our film industry, the complexity of the character and the story of Black Swan is way above the level and quality of films we have in Bollywood right now. So i wouldn't go as far as to put her performance in such low levels. You can see how much she had to put into that film, not to forget the fact that she isn't even a proper ballet dancer. Although the way the film was shot hid most of Portman's imperfect ballet skill's ( notice how they rarely capture her full body shot when she's dancing on her toes! ) , she still conveys all the emotions while trying to maintain a perfect ballet posture. That is one tough job. Her performance makes the film work.

Well i don't know if she was more deserving than other actors nominated alongside her, but she scores way better than any of the current Bollywood actresses.
But this is completely my opinion! we can agree to disagree!😊

Okay, I'm one of those people who think that Natalie did not deserve the oscar. But her acting is no way comparable to any of Kareena or PC's recent performances.

I agree with the fact that the Oscars are given way too much credibility and prestige, when lots of the winners are chosen on very biased terms. I agree with what people said about Sandra Bullock completely, she is one my most favourite actresses but I definetely dont think she deserved an Oscar. Her performance may have been HER best performance but it was not THE best performance of that cinematic year.
But I do disagree with NP not being as good as Kareena's and Vidya's........Her performace IMO was far far far superior to any performance by any Bollywood actress I've seen atleast. The maturity needed for that role, I dont think any of our actresses even have.
I'm yet to see a performance by a BW actress that can stand up to a nomination for an Oscar.
Having said that Oscars are biased and ovverated , but I still think BW awards can't even be compared to Oscars. What kind of award ceremony has
Best actor Male (Popular)
Best actor Male (Critics)
Best actor Male (Jury)
Best actor Negative Role(???)
Best actor Comic Role(???)
Best Performer (???)
Best entertainer(???)
ALL in ONE function.........Thats 7 people getting the same award basically 🤣
Actually it not even funny anymore....its just pathetic.

NP's performance in Black Swan was much better than the best performance that our heroines come up with so If our top girls and her were in the running for the same award she would win by a mile for that movie. She trained for a year for that role ofcourse she needed a body double professional ballerinas have been dancing since they were toddlers - she can't get to their level in a year. But she atleast got their body language right. Do we have anyone in Bollywood who shows this type of dedication ?
I agree Oscars are overrated - its like they have a clique and the same group keeps winning.

Oscars aren't flawless, I agree, I am not very big fan of their results to be honest. But it's thousand times better than BW awards ANY DAY! Oscars look like an angel infront of BW awards...BW awards are nothing but a joke really. And I loved NP's performance in Black Swan...She was fab! So she definitely was worth the oscar! =)

Oscars have a set rule for giving awards away. They prefer either giving it to the veterans who have been snubbed every prior year or to a relatively young actress/actor with a breakout performance. Natalie falls into the latter category. I'm not surprised. Anne Hathaway was also nominated for Rachel Getting Married few years ago (mediocre performance IMO) for the same reason.

Having said that, despite the biases they have...comeon they put more logic into giving their awards away than the bollywood awards. Bollywood awards are clearly bought...event the aam junta seems to be aware of it these days. 🤪Any aira gaira gets an award. Its not even funny anymore.

interesting topic...I for one am a Oscars phanki for the past three years I've been watching it...and every year this topic comes up who deserved it who didnt. I am also a fan of Sandra and Natalie so maybe my opinion is biased but I think that Natalie deserved it because the role of Black Swan for so different and gusty....and as for the controversy of not dancing...that girl Sarah Lane basically just dished out because she wanted her 15 minutes of fame, the director, the co-stars everyone basically vouched for Natalie and said she did most of the dancing where as the stunt double only did the most difficult of scenes....and besides they awarded her the Oscar for her ACTING not dancing

as for Sandra winning the award....the Blind Side was by far Sandra's best performance...for her standards she was amazing in that movie....being a biased Sandy fan I will say she deserved it mainly because I did not see the other nominees movies

ok now to topic...I do agree that some of the Oscars nominations and wins are W*F but Bollywood just takes the cake....there is just no justification of awards anymore... if you're famous you win an award...if your movie does huge business you win an award...which is not the case with the Oscars...even the Golden Globes....they actually award some worthy movies/people like Kate Winslet Christoph Waltz, Social Network (DAMN amazing movie), Colin Firth, Kathryn Bigelow etc

another reason why I think that the Oscars have gone a bit skewed with their results is their striving approach to appeal to the youth, hence Anne Hatahway and James Franco were hosts, Sandra Bullock and Natalie Portman won (they're termed as America's sweethearts) and also movies like Avatar was nominated for best picture.....and another thing I appreciate about the Oscars and the Golden Globes is that they don't go by the standard of Bollywood, hit=awards....if that was the case...Twilight,Transformers etc would have won for the past 3 years

I have to disagree here. I don't know what people consider deserving anymore. Natalie did an amazing job as a dancer and as an actress in the movie. At the end of the movie, I was scared the way her eyes were and how her legs was breaking. I don't think the top actresses right now can deliver a natural performance without overacting.....and than dance great at the same time. She was perfect
she deserved that award. That movie deserved attention because it was original

If you look at the history of Oscar winners - most wins are WWII..

And NP was fantastic in Black Swan and defin will deserved... BTW she is a Jew

😆 Lol....there's a pretty simple explanation for that. Jews=rich. Hollywood producers=rich. All the funding comes from the Jews. Most of the big shot Hollywood head honchos are Jews. So ofcourse. 😆

@Phoenix: Have not watched the blind side yet, it did not really intrigue me. Will let ya know once I do.
