you're right eraser, age
shouldn't matter (in a perfect world).
I find that one of the most overrated saying to be "Age is nothing but a number" and "If they're happy, age doesn't matter"
This doesn't help explain why the age difference is so skewed towards the males being older while the females are spring chickens in comparison. There is an active selection process going on which prefers youth in their female mates. Roman Polanski was quoted saying:
""If I had killed somebody, it wouldn't have had so much appeal to the press, you see? But' f'ing, you see, and the young girls. Judges want to f' young girls. Juries want to f' young girls. Everyone wants to f' young girls!""
Even society is shaped that way. Parents will snub their noses at girls who are a bit older than their son while searching for his potental wife. They would prefer someone young, and naive.
I find this more common amongst the movie industry, where girls are thrusted into the limelight early on. People can retaliate with examples of a few where the female is older, but the age gap isn't even close to the acceptable age gap of when the male is older (20-25 years)
This may be well and dandy with many, but don't you see, there's an exploitation going on. I would be fine with it if the age differences didn't prefer one sex. As always, men get the better end of the deal. We shouldn't be so surprised that society made it acceptable, afterall which of the sex had a bigger role constructing the norms (hint: they have a Y chromosome)
As always, the younger women are clueless of this skewed selection process and truly believe that it is their "mind" the men are attracted to. Somehow a man was married to a woman he didn't love for decades and finally found his soulmate in a hot young thing. Right. More like he let his little head decide that he needed to relive his youth. Hugh Hefner (founder of playboy) is getting married soon.
Aamir Khan married his young assistant and divorced his ex-wife who he has had kids with. I've seen pics of his ex-wife, she has aged but you can tell you could be a beauty. Men have difficulty accepting age. They want to think they're invinsible and that their gf/wife is a reflection of the youth. Saif Ali Khan is shameless parading his gf Kareena while he has kids from his previous marriage. I'd be a bit hurt if I were one of his kids. Shilpa Shetty's husband has kids too from his ex wife.
While age may mean nothing to some people, you cannot ignore how the world works in this regard. My personal opinion is that if people can bond through music, religion, movies, hobbies, interest, age is definitely not out of the question. While there are varying meanings of age from culture to culture, I would say that from my perspective it's universally defining. It's not the only self-definition but it's universal. For example, when you're just about to start your life as an adult, your perspective will differ from a 40-something year old who has lived a large chunk of their life already. Although the 40-something year-old will most likely be more established, it's much more ideal (in my opinion) to settle with someone who is at the same stage as you, so you can grow together, face your hurdles and challenges together, as well as your happy moments.
Also would like to add: in most parts of the world, women outlive men (in terms of life expectancy)
