Sonam and Ranbir are not related. Sonam's grandfather used to be Shammi or Shashi Kapoor's manager...their families are friends.

The name Surinder Kapoor may not immediately ring a bell. But besides producing films, this Kapoor has produced a great family as well. His sons Boney, Anil and Sanjay have achieved various degrees of success in the film industry. His granddaughter Sonam is one of the hottest young actresses today.

But the 82-year-old Kapoor seems to be oblivious to what his sons and grandchildren are up to. He prefers not to walk down memory lane when he assisted director K Asif in Mughal-e-Azam, starring his cousin Prithviraj Kapoor.

Currently living in the third floor of Anil Kapoor's [Images] bungalow with wife Nirmala Devi, Kapoor is a recipient of the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke award.

"Any award and recognition makes you happy. But if it is the Dadasaheb Phalke award, it's even more encouraging and nice. Boney and Sanjay will come with me for the award function [held in Mumbai [Images] on May 4]. Anil cannot come, as he is in the US. I have not prepared a speech; I don't believe in that," he says.

He talks to Patcy N about life thus far:

Early days

I came to Mumbai in 1950. I was 27 years old then. I am from Peshawar. When I told my cousin Prithviraj Kapoor that I wanted to come to Mumbai for a job, he asked me to come over.

When I was in Peshawar, I was working in a newspaper called Janta Weekly, which belonged to the Socialist Party. I was their sales representative. But I did not like the job.

If you actually read the interview, it's quite good. She answers what she was asked about - co stars. She doesn't answer about her relationship status - which she has always maintained. And she didn't say anything negative - she said she has nothing against these people, but they aren't her friends. Fair enough!

Before I used to also think this way that Sonam was the victim of a crossfire in that KWK interview.. but now i think otherwise.. it does intrigue me as to why Sonam decided to go on that show in the first place.. if sonam was really a very upright individual then she wouldn't have cared about the whole thing.. and she wouldn't have gone to that show... the fact that she went to that show.. even though like she says she has nothing to do with either deepika or ranbir.. proves that she herself wanted to cash on the whole controversy.. many people like katrina.. and others.. did not go on KWK.. so sonam could have avoided it too.. its not like KJO forced her to come.. the reality is that she herself is enjoying the publicity that she got from that appearance.. and she could care less about the whole fiasco.. but she went there to just enjoy the drama and cash in on it too.
