2005 was a good year for Bollywood with a better success ratio, both in terms of movies and music, when compared to some of the earlier years. With music especially, things were quite bright as number of albums belonging to different genres hit the stands and were appreciated by masses. Quite a few albums stood out, either in entirety or with at least a song or two turning out to be chartbusters. Hence we bring you the Top 13 albums that rocked the nation rather than a conventional Top 10 list!

Note: Following list contains albums that were released in the year 2005

1) Aashiq Banaya Aapne

The music album literally managed to make a lot of people 'aashiq' with everyone from a 'small kid' to a 'corporate guy' to a 'rickshaw puller' to an 'up market DJ' to 'a paanwaala' playing 'Aashiq Banaya Aapne' at full blast! Who would have thought that a small film with an unknown banner, an actor [Emraan Hashmi] who was just coming out from the comfort zone of his mentor [Bhatt's Vishesh Films], a debutant actress [Tanushree Dutta] and a composer [Himesh Reshammiya] who took to singing for the first time and that too for the majority of tracks, would have a rocking Sufi-Indian fusion soundtrack that would top the charts all over. Other tracks like 'Aap Ki Kashish', 'Mar Jaawan', 'Dilnashin' also got popular but it was the remix version of the title song (by Akbar Sami) featured on Reshammiya for the promotional purpose that got the maximum mileage. The film may have come, made a small profit and gone but the music is still selling. No wonder it features in every yearly compilation that is hitting the stands at year-end.

2) Lucky - No Time For Love

Haunting melodies. This is what Adnan Sami gave to all the music lovers when he debuted as a music composer for a Bollywood flick. Literally all the tracks in the album were popular. Whether it was 'Sun Zara', 'Chori Chori', 'Jaan Meri' or 'Lucky Lips', each of them made an instant impression as soon one heard them for the fist time. High production values that enabled eye candy choreography and picturisation further ensured that the songs were also seen rather than just being heard that further boosted the album's sale. Though the movie's tagline said 'No Time For Love', ironically 'Lucky' was a complete LOVE album that is a hot contender even today to be presented as a Valentine's gift.

3) Zeher

'Woh Lamhe Wo Yaadein' - and the entire nation was wooed by this mesmerizing love song, a Pakistani import that worked wonders for Emraan Hashmi. The song grew as days progressed and reached its peak once the movie was released. With the movie turning into a good success, there was further impetus provided to this highly successful album that also comprised of Shreya Ghoshal's highly successful sweet-n-saccharine love song 'Agar Tum Mil Jaayo'. Just two great numbers along with other decent tracks were good enough reasons to get Bhatts their first musical success of the year.

4) Dus

Oh, how much is the title song 'Dus Bahaane' loved even today. This was one of the rarest songs that started making waves even before officially being beamed on the music channels. Its first teaser promo was reason enough to celebrate and as soon as it was aired on small screen, Abhishek Bachchan became an overnight superstar. He too would attribute a good part of his current status to this KK/Shaan sung Vishal Shekhar number that has found number of versions [last heard a Punjabi dhol mix version] appearing in various compilations. An excellently packaged number, it overshadowed number of other songs in the album that were quite good in themselves but had to be relegated to being the second best (including some real techno theme tracks/instrumentals). If there was one track that still stood on its own, it was Sunidhi Chauhan's 'Deedar De' but still it was 'Dus Bahane' that was the first and foremost 'bahana' to go for 'Dus'.

5) Zinda

'Zinda' is one of the reasons why we opted for making this as a Top 13 list, in spite of the fact that the movie would be released only in 2006. India's first ever mainstream theme music compilation, each and every track in 'Zinda' conveyed the essence of life and death. Hardcore rock - that's how one summarizes the soundtrack of 'Zinda' that has excellent lyrical value and some great music that is alternatively foot tapping and thought provoking. Sanjay Gupta lived up to his reputation of providing a spectacular music score and his team of Shibani Kashyap, Pakistani band Strings, Nikhil Chinapa, DJ Nawed and Vishal Shekhar didn't disappoint. 'Zinda Hoon Main' and 'Ye Hai Meri Kahani' are already popular but there are more to come. And yes, Shibani Kashyap has now arrived and joined the BIG league!

6) Kaal

Karan Johar came out of his comfort zone by coming up with a soundtrack that was tangentially opposite to the celebration/feel good songs a la 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' or a 'K3G' or a 'Kal Ho Na Ho'. He experimented by roping in Salim-Sulaiman and didn't they create a mass hysteria with songs like 'Kaal Dhamaal', 'Tauba Tauba' and 'Nassa Nassa'. The CLUB feel was prevalent in all the tracks with 'Kaal Dhamaal' giving SRK his first ever opportunity to show his biceps. Salim Sulaiman have been doing a lot in the background music circuits but with 'Kaal', they are now being noticed for their song-n-dance capability too.

7) Barsaat

Conventional. Routine. Run-of-the-mill. Heard-before. Oh no, not again! These were some of the terms used to describe the music of Nadeem Shravan's 'Barsaat' by majority of media. But was the audience reacting in the same mode? Naah! Predictable yet likeable, conventional yet melodious - music of 'Barsaat' worked across the nation, both in metros as well as interiors [where producer-director Suneel Darshan has a loyal market]. Plain simple melody attached to the roots worked well for the music lovers and it was evident from the fact that though there was a promotional remix version of 'Nakhre' released a week before the movie release, what listeners were still interested were melodies like 'Barsaat Ke Din Aaye', 'Aaja Aaja', 'Saajan Saajan' and 'Chori Chori Ladi Akhiyaan'.

8) Parineeta

This was a soundtrack that was so very true to the movie's theme, setting, ambience, time and above all characters. Shantanu Moitra's melodious score set in 1960s captured the mood of the 'then' generation so well that it was sheer pleasure to both hear the songs in isolation and watch the actors perform as per the song's mood. Vidya Balan's expressive face and 'redefined' Saif Ali Khan immensely helped songs like 'Piyu Bole', 'Ye Hawayen' and 'Raat Hamari Who' to grow amongst all ages and class. Rekha's sizzling show with 'Kaisi Paheli' was an icing on the cake while Swanand Kirkire's lyrics were pure gems.

9) Bunty Aur Babli

A clear case of a single song taking the nation by the storm and catapulting an album to chartbuster status. When music of B&B by Shankar Ehsaan Loy was released, it looked decent but not extraordinary. 'Dhadak Dhadak' was good and looked decent on screen but a chartbuster was clearly missing. And this is when Yash Raj Films flashed an ace by unleashing 'Kajrare' and as the saying goes - rest was history. Aishwarya, Big B and the Chota B sharing the frame, Alisha Chinoy at her seductive best behind the mike, Gulzar saab's mischievous lyrics and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy funky 'qawalli' tune ensured that fortunes of B&B reversed with a sudden push to the album sales. With the movie turning out to be one of the biggest successes of the year, it was a double delight for everyone involved.

10) Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya

Before 'Aashiq Banaya Aapne' happened, Himesh Reshammiya tasted good success with his 'jump-on-the-dance-floor' soundtrack in 'Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya'. The name of the game was to chill with things getting hot-n-chilly with 'Just Chill'. 'Dil Di Nazar', 'Laga Laga', 'Ye Ladki', 'Sajan Tumse Pyaar' were never meant to be classics but were the listeners complaining? Not at all! With Salman Khan heating up the scene alternatively with Katrina Kaif and Sushmita Sen, this foot tapping album had a common thread across all the songs - RHYTHM.

11) Aksar

Now this is an album that comes with a 'WATCH OUT FOR' tag! The day it was revealed that the movie would star 'Zeher' pair of Emraan Hashmi and Udita Goswami and would have 'Aashiq Banaya Aapne' pair of Himesh Reshammiya and Sameer to handle music, it became red-hot. And after that is was just a matter of days before 'Jhalak Dikhlaja' hit the screens. The song is already an instant hit with great response to the album that released just a few days back. With Reshammiya getting behind the mike once again (after Aashiq Banaya Aapne) and songs like 'Lagi Lagi', 'Mohabbat Ke' and 'Lut Jayenge' looking good too, 'Aksar' should be one of the hottest selling albums in the first quarter of January.

12) Salaam Namaste

Apart from a rocking 'Dus', Vishal Shekhar had another reason to end the year on a great note with the good success garnered from 'Salaam Namaste'. There were just a few songs in the album but they all worked, though at different levels. Title song 'Salaam Namaste' shot on Australian beach clearly led the front with Kunal Ganjawala and Vasundhara Das rocking the show. 'My Dil Goes Mmmm' followed it as the second best. It was a pity that the 'English Club Mix' and the 'Instrumental' of 'My Dil Goes Mmmm' were not promoted to an extent that they deserved.

13) Kalyug

There were just two notable songs in the albums but they were good enough to sky rocket the prospects of 'Kalyug'. Incidentally both 'Dhadak Dhadak Jaye' and 'Aadat' were Pakistani imports but that didn't deter Indian audiences from grabbing them with arms wide open. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Atif came up with brilliant rendition for the two tracks respectively and were amazingly flawless. While the year started on a brilliant note for Bhatts with 'Zeher', it ended on an equally promising note with 'Kalyug'. And not to mention, this continued an almost clean record for the Bhatts as far as music for their films is concerned.

The Others

There were some other albums like 'Paheli (MM Kreem)', 'Holiday (Ranjeet Barot)', 'Kyon Ki (Himesh Reshammiya)', Garam Masala (Pritam), 'Kya Kool Hai Hum (Anu Malik)', 'No Entry (Anu Malik)', 'Waqt (Anu Malik)', 'Chocolate (Pritam)', 'Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena (Pritam)', 'Dosti (Nadeem Shravan)', 'Deewane Huye Paagal (Anu Malik), 'Neal N Nikki (Salim Sulaiman)', 'Ek Ajnabee (Amar Mohile)' and 'Dil Jo Bhi Kahey (Shankar Ehsaan Loy)' as well that made their presence felt. 'Rang De Basanti (A.R.Rehman) too is fast catching up.

Some offbeat albums that may not have been noticed in a big way commercially but were good products nevertheless were Black Friday (Indian Ocean), Water (A.R.Rehman), Black (Monty), Main, Meri Patni Aur Who (Rajendra Shiv, Mohit Chauhan), Brides Wanted (Ranjit Barot), The Film (Samidha-Khalid, Sidharth, Suhas and Chandresh), U, Bomsi N Me (Deepak Pandit ) and Anjaan (Vikesh Mehta, Viju Shah).

Some other songs that stood out

Right Here Right Now (Bluffmaster)
Sini Ne (Jawani Diwani)
Katra Katra (Family)
Khumari (Umar)
Baras Ja (Fareb)
Tinka Tinka (Karam)
Le Chale (My Brother Nikhil)
Ye Jo Saundhe (Men Not Allowed)
