Cast: Akshay Kumar, Anushka Sharma
Director: Nikhil Advani

Patiala House is the best work director Nikhil Advani and Akshay Kumar have done recently. It is an old-fashioned Hindi movie with big drama, solid dialogue-baazi and moments that are genuinely moving and rousing.

Akshay as Gattu, a forlorn man who has watched his dreams die, is effectively restrained and refreshingly sincere. But all of this is servicing a story that is so silly and strained that it's hard to get swept up in the histrionics.

The central conflict in the film is between Gattu and his father, Bauji, played by Rishi Kapoor. Bauji seems like a long-lost sibling of Chaudhary Baldev Singh, the stern patriarch from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jeyenge.

Bauji also lives in London's Southall area and has never assimilated into his adopted country. He suffered racial attacks, was jailed for violence against 'goras' and now hates them with such a passion that he prefers that his son, who is a cricket prodigy waste his life running a convenience store than play for the English team.

Honestly, I couldn't make sense of this. If Bauji dislikes everything English, why doesn't he move back to the motherland? And if he persists in such borderline-psychotic behavior, why doesn't the gigantic joint family ofPatiala House, which includes his wife, played by Dimple Kapadia, various aunts, nephews and nieces, stop him.

Instead everybody in the family follows Gattu's dreary example and throttles their desires.

Each one has ambitions to be something suitably different – chef, filmmaker, rapper – but each one stays quiet until the fiery Simran, played by a hyper Anushka Sharma, prods Gattu and eventually the family into rebellion.

Advani who co-wrote the screenplay with Anvita Dutt, works hard to invest plausibility and emotional heft into the tale. But the plot just gets more and more far-fetched.

At one point, Gattu is the cricket team's most valuable player – a man celebrated by the entire country but Bauji or the Sarpanch of Southall, as Gattu calls him, doesn't have a clue. These gigantic loopholes hobble Patiala House.

As does the lazy writing – none of the other family members make an impression and Bauji is such an exasperating character that even Rishi Kapoor can't humanise him.

As a result of which, Patiala House never soars but it is a notch better than the mediocre fare that we see every week. If you have patience and not much else going on, check it out.

patiala House Starts Very Slow, Panic In Trade

The film trade is in shock. Today's Patiala House has taken such a lukewarm opening that even the hardcore pessimists have been left speechless. The initial response to the Akshay Kumar starrer has been so poor that the trade people can't believe their eyes as box-office figures are flowing in.

On an average, the first show's collections have not been more than 20%. Point to be noted is that a lot of multiplexes keep their ticket rates lower in the morning shows to attract the student community. Even the low admission rates have not pulled the youth to the cinemas. Whether it was Delhi or U.P., Gujarat or Rajasthan, C.I. or C.P. Berar, Punjab or Bengal circuit, the story in the shows till 2 p.m. was the same: the film had not taken a decent start. Many cinemas reported just 10-15% opening show collections.

As compared to this initial, the start of Akshay Kumar's last film, Tees Maar Khan, was historic. Said a trade person, "'Tees Maar Khan' was a very well-hyped film as compared to 'Patiala House'. Plus, it had a Sheela ki jawani which this film doesn't have."

In recent times, this is the worst opening of an Akshay starrer. The initial of not just 'Tees Maar Khan' but also that of Khatta Meetha, Action Replayy and De Dana Dan was far better than that of Patiala House. The film's leading lady, Anushka Sharma, was considered to be a lucky girl as all her three films before this – Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Badmaash Company and Band Baaja Baaraat – have done well at the box-office. In fact, when a television channel had asked Akshay soon after 'Tees Maar Khan' had not gone down too well with the audience, if Anushka's luck would rub off on him in 'Patiala House', the star had pompously replied, "Maybe, my good luck rubs off on her." Seems, his bad luck has indeed rubbed off on the lucky girl! It must be mentioned here that Anushka's 'Band Baaja Baaraat' had also started very slow but it picked up later.

Patiala House Opens Well Below The Mark

Friday 11th February 2010 11.15 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Patiala House opened well below the mark with average morning collections at multiplexes around 30-35%. This was expected as emotional family dramas don't tend to take big openings, single screen response outside North is likely to be lower than multiplexes.

Saturday and Sunday will be very important for the film and a big pick up could mean a good run at the theatres as family drama's which work normally have longer runs at theatres. North India was best due to Akshay Kumar following in North and Punjabi factor in the film. The openings at some major multiplexes is as follows.

Wave Raja Garden Delhi

11am - 45%

Movietime Pitampura Delhi

10am -35%

11am - 40%

Wave Ludhiana

11am -60%

Fun Chandigarh

10am - 35%

Fun Chembur Mumbai

10am - 20%

Big Metro Mumbai

10am - 25%

I really hope the film is good and people interact with it .

TOI Movie Review: Patiala House bowls you over!

When was the last time you saw Akshay Kumar in a no-nonsense, sober role (not counting the bland Tasveer) where he didn't made a caricature of himself with his over-the-top comic antics? And when was the last time you found him extremely impressive while underplaying his character?

The first and the best thing that Patiala House does is redefine the typecast Akshay Kumar from the slapstick clown to a splendid actor.

The second thing that the film does is give us back the fabulous filmmaker whom we lost to the never-ending Salaam-e-Ishq and the fully formulaic Chandni Chowk To China. Picture this scene in the final reel of the film when Akshay Kumar is bowling for the last over of the cricket match. His father who never approved of his son's dream arrives at the stadium just on time. While any other director would have exploited this situation with a sentimental bonding between the father-son or a jingoistic call for victory by the father, Nikhil Advani avoids any such confrontational clich. He steers away from stereotypes and cuts out every trace of melodrama and every foreseeable formula from the film, thereby bringing freshness to the otherwise predictable family drama.

Bauji (Rishi Kapoor), the patriarch of the Kahlon family, has been fighting against racism faced by Indians in England and has brought respect and individuality of their community in Southall. He has always been the dominating head of his extended joint family (that can put Rajshri to shame) and his diktats have decided everyone's destiny. His elder son Gattu (Akshay Kumar) had to forsake his dreams of playing cricket for the national England team since Bauji was never in favour of the firangs, despite residing on foreign lands.

17 years later, when Gattu gets a chance to be a part of the England team again, Simran (Anushka Sharma) encourages him to live his dream. After much probing by the younger generation in the Kahlon family, Gattu agrees to play, but without informing his father. Until Bauji learns of it just before the final match.

From characterizations to conflicts, one can find references galore in the writing, though thankfully nothing is blatantly duplicated. Rishi Kapoor's authoritative patriarch character who has things go his way has been a popular family figure in Hindi films from Dina Pathak's Khoobsurat to Amitabh Bachchan's Sooryavansham. Further Gattu facing opposition from his father to play cricket is reminiscent of Gurinder Chadha's Bend It Like Beckham where the NRI Punjabi father (Anupam Kher) doesn't approve of his daughter's football fervour.

The screenplay by Nikhil Advani and Anvita Dutt Guptan has a systematic approach towards the storytelling. A quick prologue explains the racial discrimination plot and a fleeting flashback establishes Gattu's rise and renouncement in cricket. With the joint family setup, the narrative expectedly proceeds with a wedding in the household, as a dozen characters are erratically introduced and confuse you with their correlations. The story subsequently works towards Gattu's resurgent induction in the sport and humour comes naturally in the narrative with the family's attempts to cover up Gattu's field performance from Bauji. The concluding reels make way for heartrending dramatic moments between the father-son and an obvious yet exciting cricket match.

What's commendable about Advani's writing and direction is that he never overdoes anything though there is a common tendency with the theme he tackles. He never goes jingoistic in the racism track nor does he overstate Indian tradition and culture on London lands with the NRI setting. Again the family drama is never overblown and is treated with subtlety and maturity. Anvita Dutt Guptan's restrained yet powerful dialogues help achieve that in a big way. The first half might appear slow and one-dimensional but it works steadily to bring conviction to the protagonist's journey. The horde of familial characters might baffle you at times but they are all driven by a common conflict – living their dream over Bauji's.

At a broader level, the film gives a subtle social message of breaking boundaries of regionalism and nationalism. Patiala House doesn't need an all-Indian or an all-Asian team, like in the John Abraham – Arshad Warsi starrer football film Goal, to incite nationalistic sentiments in the viewer. Even as an Indian audience, the director compellingly makes you root for an NRI who plays for the England cricket team and defeats Australia.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is refreshing and the theme song that frequently plays in the background adds value to the proceedings. Santosh Thundiyil's cinematography is competent and Manan Sagar's editing is just perfect. Remo D'Souza smartly choreographs the song Rola Pe Gaya as an Indo-Western fusion.

Akshay Kumar underplays his character with absolute sincerity and gives one of the best performances of his career. So used are we with his histrionics that, at times, it seems he is overtly toned down here. But then he remains in his character and is impressive. Rishi Kapoor is superlative in his commanding character. His body language, dialect and expressions are impeccable. Anushka Sharma isn't ignored in this father-son drama and stands on her own. She has a well-etched role and is confident as always. Dimple Kapadia is decent in her part. Hard Kaur is amusing. Geneva Talwar is good.

Nikhil Advani's hold on the film is so strong that you don't want to leave the hall even when the end-credit song is playing. Patiala House simply bowls you over.

PATIALA HOUSE is a heart-warming drama. Do pay a visit to this house with your family. A fun time is guaranteed.

The ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 is around the corner. The excitement among fans is humongous as we are a few days away from the opening match. So it's perhaps a great move to release a film with a cricket theme, just before the big tournament.

While we've seen many films based on cricket (LAGAAN, VICTORY, IQBAL), PATIALA HOUSE is different as it's primarily a father-son conflict, having cricket as it's backdrop.

34-year-old Parghat Singh Kahlon aka Gattu (Akshay Kumar) had given up his dreams due to his authoritarian father Gurtej Kahlon (Rishi Kapoor), 17 years ago. Despite being an excellent fast bowler, he wasn't allowed to play for Firangis (England) as their family was subjected to racist attacks many years back. Gurutej turned very aggressive post the incident and used to raise his hand or voice at the drop of a hat.

Gattu, on the other hand, has been living a mediocre life, working in a Southhall corner store for years now. The younger generation of his family blames him for setting the wrong example.

Still not over with his love for the game, Gattu discreetly practices bowling when no one is around. His neighbour friend Simran (Anushka Sharma) and her kid brother (Z) are determined to get Gattu's life back on track. Will he get his life back is what forms the rest of the story.

Nikhil Advani keeps the narrative to the point, avoiding all the redundancies in the first half. The characters and their conflicts are well established. It's a tough situation if you are in the shoes of Gattu and have to choose between your dreams and family. You really do feel for Gattu and his predicament. Simran and Zee making a spineless Gattu realise the importance of chasing dreams is inspiring. Their characters act as catalysts in moving the story ahead.

Post the interval, the Nikhil goes a bit wayward in his direction. The entire plan and more so its execution is just too convenient. The cricket scenes, though not bad, don't arouse the excitement that LAGAAN immaculately did.

The plot is no doubt predictable. You roughly know what will happen in the end. But how Nikhil reaches there is plausible. There's an endearing scene just before the interval where Priti Kahlon (Jeneva Talwar) tells Gattu that the Britishers treat Indians as equals and have hence offered him a place in their team. The lighter moments manage to bring a smile.

Manan Sagar's editing is good but the second half could have been much tighter. Cinematography by Santosh Thundiyil is nice. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music goes well with the film.

Akshay Kumar, teaming up with Nikhil after CHADNI CHOWK TO CHINA, is first-rate as he delivers a very restrained performance. He looks convincing as a cricketer and never goes overboard. Rishi Kapoor plays his role to perfection. Anushka Sharma is refreshingly good and is at her chirpiest best. The boy who plays Zee is completely natural. Dimple Kapadia doesn't have much scope. Tinu Anand is good. Thankfully, the cricketers (Andrew Symonds, Herschelle Gibbs, Kieron Pollard) are just seen playing cricket and don't mouth dialogues. All the other characters are fine in their small roles.

PATIALA HOUSE is a heart-warming drama. Do pay a visit to this house with your family. A fun time is guaranteed.

Rating – 3/5

Rediff Review: Patiala House works purely on the strength of Akshay's vulnerability and restraint

Most of Patiala House's heart comes from Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's tender piano theme and Akshay Kumar's measured and matured delivery as a compliant son with a burning desire to play cricket although he's (a rather convincing) 34 years old.

And so Patiala House turns into a Gurinder-less Bend it like Beckham meets kind of a Goodbye, Lenin! The foolhardiness works purely on the strength of Akshay's vulnerability and restraint. He succeeds in making a connect with the viewer triggering an urge to strangle him when he's passive, cheer for him when clean bowls Andrew Symonds [ Images ] or takes a Mohammad Azharuddin-inspired catch and reach out when he breaks into unbridled tears of snub or humiliation. If 'filmi' still excites you, you'll enjoy the certainty of it all. If not, you probably never read this.

Quite conveniently, a politically correct Advani never shows Akshay playing against India. Predictably, the men in blue do march to victory; it's just a few shades darker than I would have liked to cheer for.
