P.S. I loved Dhobi Ghat. 😛

hahaha, that quote. and what an uproar it created. 😆 aamir had the right idea but the way he said it, was wrong. he should have chosen his words more wisely. I talked about this quote of his with my friend once. ahhh, forgot what I said. but basically, if we take out the first two sentences 😆 he actually meant to say the movie was for people who like to read, who like to draw, I guess do quiet things. 😆

I loved dhobi ghat too.

The only "intellectual film" I liked is Inception lol. Others like someone already mentioned are boring!

Some one already mentioned this...i agree...I think intellectual films= films that make you think. They don't spoon feed you the story. You have to figure out what's going on in the film. And sometimes they ending doesn't have a solution. Just like DG...someone mentioned that the ending didn't make sense...that's how intellectual films are. They usually don't have a clear plot either. These so called intellectual films doesn't idealize situations like love for example. The film usually focuses on the internal states of the characters rather than the story of the film. And things happen as a chance in the film...there is no cause and effect!

I take a film class by the way. That's where some these facts are coming from! 😃

I like intellectual films when they're specially branded as "intellectual"

I can watch those kinds of films and think 'yes, it really made me think' afterwards

Whenever a director brands them as intellectual, then I have to be cautious because in most cases in Bollywood, that is simply not true (ahem SLB😆)

Aamir's prediction about DG did kinda come true, the movie failed to make an impact on box office. I still remember reading in the gossip thread that he specially checked out NOKJ coz it was supposed to be competition as it relased within a close time span. DG was supposed to topple NOKJ, but NOKJ held its own.. it wasn't exactly a cerebral movie.. but it wasn't a masala and treatment it was subtle and it did well at boxoffice also. And is inception supposed to be an intellectual movie?? There are theories that the whole movie was a dream.. and the dream within a dream thing was silly.. southpark mocked inception very well.. just coz an idea is complexed and multi-layered doesn't mean it is intellectual.

Intellectual movies are movies that are filled with moments of depth that make the audience contemplate, feel and react to their own thoughts and emotions. This doesn't have to be a pretentious artsy/parallel cinema movie; it just has to be a movie which is made with the intention of making the audience think about any issue really (e.g. love, hatred, misogyny, philosophy, innocence, romance, sex, money, food etc etc etc).

I have dreams within dreams all the time....why is that silly? So many times I wake up in my dream and say "oh crap I was dreaming" and then I finally wake up and be like "Oh that WAS ALL a dream" 😆 Tell me how do you know what is happening to you is REAL and that you are not dreaming? When I dream I think that is my reality....and then I wake up and get a reality check...or so I think....😆 Ok the movie wasn't about that....but dreams are not silly...it's something we don't understand much! I need to check Southpark.

Nolan's films are a great mix of masala and brain IMO....his Dark Knight has a lot of depth in addition to all the chase sequence and blowing up and fast cars....same with Inception....I wish there was someone like that in Bollywood who could put some depth into masala films....and write gripping screenplays and at the same time make your brain do some work!

I think as long as the movie makes you think (about yourself, about life, about other people) and/or there is some work needed on your part to understand the film it is intellectual....some films take repeated viewing to appreciate it's true greatness and to even understand it....sometimes the writers/directors want to just leave it open ended for your interpretation....and come on they don't have to be boring all the time....and then at the end of the day it's your call....liked it or hated it....intellectual or not....

well u know, if u watch Vishal bharadwaj's films, or sriram raghavan's films, or quinten tarantino films, they never spoon feed the audience with all the details about the characters or the plot...the film just unravels and it is upto the audience to figure out what is happening...if u miss a scene, or ur not paying attention, the entire movie wouldn't make sense to u...and they dunt have glaring logical loopholes or plot holes, because everything is well planned in the script...so i guess thts whts technically, the meaning of intellectual films....

films tht require the audience to form their own perceptions and opinions without telling them wht to do, or manipulating them....

but films tht claim to be intellectual, are more often than not, pretentious and boring.

I know what you mean Lifo.. but at the end one goes like W*F was that?? There was nothing concrete.. its like you wasted all time on fluff.. and the ending also.. they left it as a mystery... one can't be sure.. if cobb was still dreaming when he came back to his kids at the end or was it reality.. since they didn't show it properly as to what happened to the totem... its like you are truly engrossed in an idea.. and at the end.. you are only left with ambiguity!
