Won't take chances with films like Aisha: Abhay

After the debacle of Aisha, Abhay Deol has turned super cautious. He insists that a movie should be talked about for its content and not for what his co-actors are wearing.

Talking about Sonam Kapoor's home production, he recalls that too much energy was wasted in styling the wardrobe. "All that's superficial but as an actor, I don't have much say," he sighs.

After this learning experience, Abhay is now determined to work with only people he knows. "I won't take chances with films like Aisha anymore," he asserts. Fortunately, there are few apprehensions about Zoya Akhtar's Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and it's A-list cast.

During a two-month long schedule in Spain, Abhay got to know gymming fanatics, Hrithik Roshan and Farhan Akhtar better and initiated them into Asthanga yoga that he's been practicing for some years now. "Hrithik's very interested in fitness and Farhan would also join me in doing suryanamaskars before his workouts," he smiles.

Zoya's movie has been wrapped up and Abhay's home production, Basra, is reportedly shelved because of prior commitments. "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is not to blame," he hastens to add. "And Basra will take off next year. I'm an actor first and can't delay other productions that have already been planned. I'm committed to three films that will flag off by the year-end, a good mix of multi-starrers and solo hero projects. Once they are done, we'll return to Basra," Abhay says.

Meanwhile, Abhay is working on the treatment for two other films, a thriller inspired by a real incident, and a period movie. Says the brain behind Anurag Kashyap's Dev D, "Let's see who collaborates on them with me."

Abhay's track record
Socha Na Tha (2005): average
Ahista Ahista (2006): no-show
Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd (2007): merry-go-round at the box office
Ek Chalis Ki Last Local (2007): Good reviews, few takers
Manorama Six Feet Under (2007): long delayed, expectedly went under despite critics' thumbs-up
Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! (2008): bad timing (Mumbai attacks) skittled this good film
Dev.D (2009): critically acclaimed, commercially successful
Road, Movie (2010): no takers for this bioscope journey
Aisha (2010): all style, no substance

O...k
Honestly, I REALLY enjoyed the acting of all the actors in Aisha, and it had a fabulous cast, from Sonam to Abhay to Ira and Amrita.
And what was he expecting from a movie that was proclaimed as a chick-flick from the very first day? Chick flicks are always known for fab designing and sets to rom-com storylines, which si what Aisha was!

Not surprised with Abhay's comments...

From what I have read initially Aisha was touted as an adap[tation of Emma. The character of Emma had a lot more depth, the book digresses the society, class structure and relationships of that age.

Abhay's character had a lot more scope if the book was followed.

however Aisha is just a chick-flick. personally I found the movie very superficial which was hell bent in telling us thaty Sonam ios the ultiomate Indian fashionista. Even the director gave an interview saying that she had some big arguements with the Kapoor sisters as she was not given enough freedom to carry with her vision of Aisha which was closer to the book.

there was nothing more to the movie. If only sonam spent 1/10 th of the effort she showed in getting her looks right , in getting her emotions right.

Sonam is a great fashion icon but she has a long way to go as an actress. Aisha really did NOT impress me, mostly because it was really obvious that much more attention was given to the clothes and the fashion rather than the script of the movie. Sonam's look and style completely overshadowed her acting, which frankly, is what she should be focusing on at this point in her career. It's great that she has a great sense of fashion but that's not gonna help her very much in terms of her acting career.

I'm looking forward to Guzaarish. Hopefully, there is some untapped potential in this girl that Pankaj Kapoor will be able to get out.

Umm..I really like Abhay...but what's the point of saying this now? I mean he seemed perfectly fine earlier and even rubbished the rumours about Sonam's budget for clothes being greater than his fees (or something along those lines). Well, I didn't much enjoy the script of the movie and think Sonam needs to improve, but I really liked him in Aisha and thought he suited the role, plus also liked the chemistry between him and Sonam. Also, he was the one saying he's wanting to be versatile and explore as many different characters as possible. Strange that he should say something like this now. 🤔

Although I do agree that the focus should have been more on the content of the movie rather than fashion during the promotions.
