What do people mean when they say that SLB should stop trying to make 'different movies' and stop being a 'wannabe'. a wanna-be what exactly? what was 'saawariya' WANTING to be like? it certainly wasnt like any hollywood movie ive seen. im not saying saawariya was great or anything, infact it was very flawed, but i highly doubt its because it was WANTING-TO-be like hollywood. it just didnt work because the story wasnt panned out properly, and for two new-comers to take on such roles wasnt really marketable to the audience. but in terms of its old-glab style, the surrealism, and how the time, setting none of that was made specific i think those were all done on purpose and added so much visual appeal to the entire film overal.

I have no idea what guzaarish is going to be like, but drawing inspiration from the style in which directors outside of india take movies on simular subjects isnt really being a 'wannabe'. its actually called developing some range. If you want to see a 'wannabe' movie i suggest everyone go watch another movie about a party boy with a dance number where everyones jumping up and down screaming english lyrics such as 'rock your world' or 'just wanna be with you'.

i really rrealllyyy dont like bollywood movies that go out of their way to be more like hollywood and abandon all the essential roots of indian filmaking, but i for one have never thrown SLB into that category. his highly dramatized, romantic and poetry-type story telling and visuals are very much his own thing and i dont tihnk its found in hollywood at all. -__-'

[end rant]

^ to the comment above.

I definitely don't think SLB tries to mimic Hollywood in any way (and thank god for that because we have enough directors doing that) but I do find his cinema pretentious. Like I said before, the only exception to this would be Khamoshi. Otherwise, I feel like his films lack simplicity and tend to portray emotions in a very unreal and over-dramatic way that (to me) screams over-the-top. I can see how this might seem "wanna-be" to some people because honestly, the emotions, scenes and characters just don't seem real or relatable which often translates into trying to make a film too artsy and "brilliant" which is where the wanna-be aspect comes in.

I do see what you're saying, and in some ways i'd have to agree, there is an aspect to bhansali's film style where he seems to be a bit over-ambitious from the very start, which yes, comes off as him trying to make a film to be brilliant, not make a film to be a film. And i think in his attempts to do that there is a slight danger of it coming off as pretensious nonsense, but i feel that regardless he does a very good job of making simple emotions tragically beautiful. Simplicity in all honesty is the very best way to deliver a message, but i have a soft spot for SLB's style. Saawariya was over the top, and i usually hate that, but all that blue, all those tinking noises, the dark and etherial setting all are dizzying and wonderful to watch and take in.

Perhaps this is just a personal quirk, but SLB is one director i can ignore all those flaws of and be consumed by the way he wants to tell a tale. I am really looking forward to Guzaarish, and i really do hope that in the end regardless of how stylistic or visually beautiful it is that much like yourself, i want for him to deliver a simple message that comes through properly and wont get lost in his ambition (i believe this might be the main flaw in saawariya).

All that aside, i do very much see your point chatpati, and i must thank you for not blindly bashing my support of SLB and making a valid point in your reply.

Yeah absolutely! It's nice to be able to have a discussion in a civil manner 😊

And I do know what you're saying about his films and the setting often having an ethereal element to them. It's sort of like poetry on celluloid. Unfortunately, I'm not a big fan of poetry and like things to be straightforward but it would be foolish to ignore the magnificence of his sets/scenes and the attention he pays to detail (the sets in Devdas were breathtaking!) But let's hope Guzaarish is able to combine that with a gripping screenplay and some elements of reality/simplicity that the general audience can relate to.

The Sea Inside is a spanish film based on the true story of Ramon Sampredo. Bhansali seems to be "inspired" by this film.

This promo looks amazing....I'd love to watch this movie....and yeah Bhansali does seem inspired by it in bits when it comes to Guzaarish....the rest of the inspiration comes from The Prestige I guess😆.....nevertheless the movie still has me intrigued and I'm curious to see the whole story.

Yeah Ramon was not a magician, so that aspect of Guzaarish is "inspired" fronm The Prestige.

Its a truly inspirational film😆, I hope it is good.
