STYLE BHAI

Gawky with strange hair and bizarre clothes. Is it possible we are talking about Saif Ali Khan. Yes, when he first appeared on the scene, Saif's fashion sense was awkward. Over time the chote nawab has morphed and how into a dashing style icon. FIlmfare checks out his sartorial savvy

1993
Aashiq Aawara

This was Saif's debut film. One look at him in this film and there is no way you would have guessed that the gawky newcomer would be a future style icon. The clothes were all wrong, the hair frumpy, his acting and dancing sloppy. Surprise, surprise he still got the Best Male Debutant Award.

1994
Main Khiladi Tu Anari

He played anari (read second fiddle) to the relatively established khiladi (Akshay Kumar). The film was a hit and so were the songs. You couldn't miss those baggy jackets and Saif trying to be the flashy, '90s star. He managed well, we guess.

1994
Yeh Dillagi

He played the proverbial skirt chaser. His style was supposed to be rakish and bohemian. It was also unfortunately very early 90s. Who would have thought he would have carried off the green blazer and the bold printed shirt in Hoton pe bas with such lan?

1999
Hum Saath Saath Hain

As the youngest brother in a joint family, Saif was still playing the second hero. His role was of little consequence here and his dress sense hardly improved. clothes more difficult to recall.

2001
Dil Chahta Hai

He was the youngest of three friends in Dil Chahta Hai. Director Farhan Akhtar cashed in on Saif's goofiness. With an uber cool haircut, and bright attire, Saif suddenly gave the word 'cool' a new meaning.

STYLE BHAI

2003
Darna Mana Hai

He was part of just one of the several stories that formed the larger part of this horror film. That stubble, the sweaty cotton shirt and the khakhees made him stand out.

2003
Kal Ho Naa Ho

This was a big one for Saif. He came into his own. He stood out not as a second hero but as a parallel lead in Kal Ho Na Ho. As a Manhattan MBA student, Saif was suave, well-turned out with a stylish hair cut and long overcoats. He looked the young urban yupppie who lives abroad.

2004
Ek Hasina Thi

Saif's former wife Amrita Singh had described Saif's performance in Ek Hasina Thi as one of his coolest of the time. He looked sharp and smart, in well cut suits that fit him even better as he had joined the brawn brigade of heroes.

2004
Hum Tum

Saif had arrived. His first solo hit. A cartoonist had never looked so hip and trendy. Finding fault with the way he turned out in this film was next to impossible.

2005
Parineeta

By now he was known as the fourth Khan. The dude managed to look dishy in those bandgalas, kurtas, achkans and classic fitted suits. He struck the perfect balance between the traditional and the modern adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's 1914 Bengali novella, Parineeta

STYLE BHAI

2005
Salaam Namaste

Pink vests? Which guy could have carried it with as much flair? The ultimate metrosexual Saif Ali Khan did. Salaam Namaste further reinstated the actor's cool, sexy avatar. Even the sudden in-your-face beefy look was kind of glossed over.

2006
Omkara

Ajay Devgn played the title role. Yet in the role of Langda Tyagi, Saif stole more than just the thunder in this modern adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello. The metrosexual turned dehati had stained teeth, wore khadi kurtas, teamed it with woolen waist coats and an occasional muffler. A short crop was the perfect icing on the cake.

2007
Eklavya

As a young prince, who is foreign educated, he once again struck a perfect balance between looking traditional and modern. Notice his sober but yet stylish linen shirt and trousers in the kite flying sequence with Vidya Balan in the film.

2008
Race

As a stud farm owner, he looked dashing. It was a carefully crafted, millionaire look with well-tailored suits and a rakish stubble that did it for him and oh the confidence he wore. Even the derby horses would agree.

2009
Love Aaj Kal

Saif in his career's first double role made a mark. As a confused lover he sported a look which was contemporary -- tight-fitting, smart t-shirts, faded jeans, looking effortless and hip. In the other role he was dressed as a young turbaned Sardar besotted by his ladylove. He looked the part equally well. The big checked shirts with a neatly maintained beard augmented his young, robust Sardar look.

Makes me reminicse the time when I wasn't at all fond of Saif to the time I really started liking him (during Hum Saath Saath Hain days) and finally back to disliking him (post Salam Namaste). Ek Hasina and Omkara definitely are my favourites from his career graph though.

Well for me Salaam Namaste is partly the reason why I didn't find him appealing, it's not cos the character he played was a complete jerk, it's more the way he portrayed it.
I definitely thought his performance in Omkara was his best but by then he was merely any other actor for me, no longer any attachment nor was he one of my favourites. I dunno why, the charisma I found initially was just lacking.
After Hum Saath Saath Hain, I thought he would reach greater heights, he obviously has, he can do a lot better though.

Saifs experimented so much with his style. Hair, overall look, etc.
And the roles he's done have been just as diverse, especially in his phase now.
