Which directors do you feel are the most talented nowadays?
And which genres does each excell in? Is there one who can do pretty much everything?

My list:
Imtiaz Ali: The new age romance guru! His movies are the perfect balance of realism with a bollywood commercial touch.
Sriram Raghavan: The maestro of thrillers! He beats Abbas Mustan in my opinion.
VIshal B: Omkara, Maqbool, Kaminey. Enough said.
Ashutosh: Good with period films. Comedy...errr...not so much.

Vishal Bharadwaj : This guy makes kick-ass movies! 😆 Maqbool, Makdi, Omkara, The Blue Umbrella and now Kaminey! Enough said!
Sriram Raghavan : I still can't understand why both Ek Hasina Thi and Johnny Gaddar did not do well at the Box-office. Two of the most enjoyable and un-bollywood like movies, I have ever had the pleasure of watching!
Rakesh Mehra : RDB Rocks! The guy created such a masterpiece, it will be a wonder if he is ever able to top it!
Anurag Basu : Life in a Metro, Gangster and even that sleazy Murder showcased this guy's obvious talent.
Nagesh Kukunoor : Hyderabad Blues, Rockford and the memorable Dor...he has not been consistent, but these three films are enough for me to make him a favorite!
Imtiaz Ali : Socha Na Tha, Jab We Met and Love Aaj Kal! Not just superhit movies, but also the kinds which can always bring a smile on your face whenever you repeat watch it!
Farhan Akhtar : Can't decide in which role I like him the best...Actor, Singer, Screenplay writer, lyricist, dialouge writer! I think he has excelled the most as a director...Dil Chahta Hai, Lakshya and Don! He brings a lot of class and sophistication to his films!

Oh yeah I forgot to add Farhan Akhtar in my list!

Also, directors to watch out for, I feel Zoya Akhtar, Ayaan Mukherjee, and Rensil D'silva.
All have a very hatke touch to their direction. Very UNbollywood like!

I like Raj Kumar Hirani too, but I don't feel he is a 'hatke' director who makes 'different' movies! Plus, in most of his films, his direction seems to be overshadowed by his actors, screenplay and dialouges ect! Else, he is very good too, but not exceptional!
Really liked Kurbaan and Rensil's direction was very taut and crisp! Am looking forward to his next! Even I thought that Zoya was very good with Luck By Chance! And even Aamir with Taare Zameen Par.
I wonder why Shekhar Kapoor doesn't direct anymore! Masoom and Bandit Queen...two very different films and both of them flawless in their own genres!
Ashutosh was great with both Lagaan and Swades! Wasn't that impressed by JA and WYR though!
Balki is also good...Chini Kum and Paa! Even though both the movies had their share of flaws, they were both an attempt to do something unique and they did well at the box office too!

Anurag Kashyap, Dibaker Bannerjee, and Vishal Bharadwaj would top my list. Out of these three I think Vishal is the one who can make different kinds of films within his own sensibilities...he's done dramas, children's films, dark comedies. These three I would say are the most experimental and are really pushing the envelope in their films.

Then Imtiaz, Sriram Raghavan, Farhan Akhtar, Shimit Amin. Raju Hirani too based on his first two films.

Navdeep Singh, Zoya Akhtar, Ayan Mukherjee are people to watch out for but since they've only made 1 film each its hard to say where they will go. I would add Vijay Lalwani to the list after seeing KCK.

Dibankar Banerjee: Khosla ka Ghosla, Oye lucky lucky oye, Love sex dhoka---All very unique and interesting movies...

Anurag Basu: I loved his direction in Metro and Murder--Not really interested in Kites but love to see his vision in Kishore kumar's biography...

Sriram in Ek haseena thi---unbollywood, very gripping thrillers :)

Raju: for his feel good movies...you never feel disappointed for spending money on films...I also love the sublime message he gives from his movies..

Farhan Akhtar: I loved DCH and Lakshya but I am disappointed by DON....I hope he makes different cinema other than DON...but i love his production ---excel--they make some excellent movies..

Neeraj Pandey-- a wednesday : No big stars, No songs, but he hold the audience for 2 hours with his near perfect direction and story telling...I am anxiously waiting for his new movies..

Imtiaz ali: Although I am not a huge fan of his work except SNT but I love the "moments" in his film...I love the romance in it...

Vishal Bhardwarj: Maqbool, Blue Umbrella, Omkara -- What more can I say...

Completely forgot about Dibankar! Khosla Ka Ghosla was a gem of a movie and the way he captured the pulse of middle-class Delhi was just fantastic! Loved OLLO too...and have been hearing great things about LSD! A lot of credit also goes to his screenplay / dialouge writer, Jaideep Sahni who worked with him on the first two films!
